Sometimes I cant!!

Late June 1945. NJP clubbed me good today. I made a mistake with a CV fleet. Meant it to continue escorting an amphib group but I disbanded and created a new one. The Allied task forces cannot be given a soviet port for base so it sailed toward fusan and into his entire air arm.

I lost a CV outright and scuttled another one along with a CL. I am sure NJP will have the play by play in his AAR. Disappointing that I lost my first big ones to a mistake but oh well.

I do not need my CV's anymore other than as escorts for the soviets. Fusan has been taken and has about 40,000 troops left in 58 units. Attack going in today. Once I clear Fusan I will make it a major airbase and use it to send troops to the home islands under strong CAP.

Mid July 1945

A large strike just went in on the Hiroshima airport where 500 fighters were stationed. It was a bloodbath with the allies losing over 200 aircraft to over 500 for the Japanese. It was a nice margin until I found out about 200 Japanese planes were trainers.

Still, it reduces his pools.

Within a few days troop ships begin loading for Matsue. I will take Oki-Shoto and invade Matsue with 3 divisions. I will airdrop into Tokuyama to prevent reinforcements from the east.

My plan is to invade with the bulk of my forces at Shiminoseki and move from there. I have troops prepping for Tottori as well. I want to take the plains area of Japan first and save the hard terrain for later if necessary.

July 20, 1945

The invasion of Japan has begun. 4 divisions land at Matsue on the northern side of Honshu. The stacking limit is 70,000 and they currently have 51,000 in the hex. I should have brought some armor or anti-armor to this invasion but did not prep for it. I was hoping to take him out quickly but he already has 800 AV in the hex naturally and I am sure he has some units on active reserve ready to strat move so it would be more.

I believe there is more advantage to me digging in and defending rather than trying to attack an equal or larger force. Troops are loading up for Shimoseki which is the primary target. I have a number of divisions prepping for Tottori as well and will use them to cut off what is loading up at Matsue.

July 23, 1945

Troops landed at Matsue and the turn after they arrived another 1000AV was in the hex. So I did activate NJP's rapid reactionary force.

On July 21, boats loaded to invade Shiminoseki and on the 22nd they hit the beaches. There were over 1000 guns defending the beaches.

On July 22 the infantry rested up for an assault and and on the 23rd, Shiminoseki fell to the first allied attack at 10-1 odds. I am guessing the 6 or 7 naval bombardments plus getting plastered by every bomber within range helped the disruption along with all the landing ship guns. I was also encouraged to see that the units were having supply issues.

Now that I have secured a foothold on Honshu it should make it very difficult for the Japanese to resist further invasion.

Lookin' good at Shimonoseki with your cork in the bottleneck! He only has a railway bridge coming from Kyushu so he shouldn't be able to march much in from the west for a while. I think crossing there on foot only yields four miles a day.

Mid August 1945

Matsue just fell. Two days ago I had a landing at Tottori which was already owned by me. There were 70,000 troops protected by a CVE convoy with CV's 2 hexes out providing additional CAP. It wasnt nearly enough and NJP overwhelmed and trashed 9 CVE's. On the bright side the convoy remained essentially intact and unloaded sucessfully. The next turn I got the CV's into the hex and he lost 500 planes.

2 day total was 1200 planes for the japanese and 500 planes + at least 1000 points in CVE's and escorts lost on the allied side.

Allies still need 28,000 VP's for the win and I think the Japanese will pass the historic surrender date. Most of my forces are prepping for Osaka/Kyoto and hopefully if I manage to break the enemy there I can win the game.

The amazing carnage on my side is quite possibly a strategic failure but it sure is fun!!!

NJP has passed the Japanese historical date for surrender... He wins!!!

Awesome game play!!! In the 2nd game NJP tripped off the emergency troops for Australia and completely took over Tasmania before retreating to put up a masterful defense well into the fall of 1945.

I will get a 2-1 victory eventually, within a few months is likely. I still need 20,000+ VP's though. Going to play it to the end.

NJP did very well this game. Army VPs are almost in his favor and ship VPs still are. Makes it tough to get the 2-1 ratio by the historical end date. Looks like this war could go until October or November before you finally get the 2-1.

What about nukes? I know you probably don't like them but I think it would be a good capstone when you're on the cusp of a 2-1 ratio. I mean how many of us can say we've used nukes in a full PBEM before? Not an opportunity that comes around very often!

I have not really seen great results from their use. First of all you have to have air superiority over a hex or risk losing the plane and if you do get through that does not guarantee awesome damage. I doubt I will be using a nuke but if the game lasts till Christmas maybe Santa will have something to drop down the chimney!!

Going to help the Russians take over the eastern side of Japan. Might end up with East and West Tokyo in this game :]

I see you lost more VPs 2,000+ in shipping, I would consider that to be a Japanese win.

Most of that happened when the AI reacted a huge CV TF right into the guns and mines in the straits of Tsushima - I forget which base but that does not matter. It was one of those things that isn't really in the player's control except to avoid the area entirely - and Wargmr was already in the Sea of Japan trying to move back to his own bases.
Many players would have asked for a re-do but Wargmr ate the losses and continued - good on him! Made for an interesting and more drawn out end game.

Early September 1945

Hokkaido is in trouble. NJP has good forces at Sapporo but Bihoro folded and soon everything else will be invaded/surrounded. Toyohara is under siege by equal forces.

On Honsu NJP has over 3500 AV at Hiroshima and still good forts. The last attack went in at 1 to 11 with the previous at 1 to 14. Fukyuyama seems pretty strong but Okyama is seemingly a weak spot with the last adjusted just over 500AV with the raw AV being near 2600. My troops got downgraded pretty seriously as well but I have 4000 AV with most of my armor attacking again this turn. If/when it folds then Hiroshima is isolated.

I have 4 russian divisions that have trained for Akita that are beginning to load at Keijo as it has just fallen. I will do an amphibious assault on this base at the northeast side of Honshu and put further pressure on the Japanese. From there I can put most of the russian army on the Japanese mainland.

What is impressive is the rate of healing of my divisions on Honshu. Due to all the HQ's and plentiful supply most divisions are in fantastic shape. I just attack, take my beating, divide the divisions, heal, rebuild and attack again. It just reinforces how badly I handled support and HQ's through the game. A point I need to work on with the next one.

The point score just dropped to below 20,000 for an allied 2-1 win. Looking like it ends before November but I could always destroy a huge allied carrier group still...

NJP has a huge minefield at Hiroshima that he is using as a shield along with small shipping groups. Impossible to bombard without running into the mines. I am sending fleets of PT boats into them and having them blow up but the progress is slow. I plan on amphibious assaulting Takamatsu but want to wait to be sure I have reinforcements ready to go. He had 4 units there but a low bombing destroyed 2 of them and the hex has almost no guns so another run will probably take the remaining units out.

NJP has 1000 fighters at Kobe and another 600 at Kyoto along with 1400 at Tokyo. I am trying to avoid the buzz saw CAP.

I appreciate the compliment. It has been another epic contest and a wonderful few years playing NJP.

October 1 1945

NJP is still stubbornly holding on. Probably because I dont strat bomb that much. Russia has taken over northeast Japan. Going to put a few more AV in at akita and then drop a couple mechanized divisions on the other side of the island in a clear hex. Hopefully this really causes him some problems.

About 16K still to go for the win, it might take till 1946 at this rate :]

This is looking like the collapse of Germany - Russians racing toward Tokyo from the east and Western powers struggling to get there from the west. Can you say "Tokyo Wall", kids? Better start prepping some units to fight Russians!

PS - all in reference to the situation in late 1945, not today's world stage.

I suggested that to NJP earlier, we just might have east and west Tokyo!! :]

Congrats on a well played game - and to NJP too for his grit in resisting your advances! He almost retained his Undefeated Japan virginity!
Awesome entertainment and learning experience to follow your AAR. What I learned mostly was never to play you nor NJP ....

Aircraft Pools

Many people are concerned about how many planes are in their pools and are happy when they have alot. I view planes in the pools as ones that are not being used so plane levels are an afterthought to me.

As far as bombers, by the time the B-29's started getting scarce the B17-G showed up to fill any deficit.

I did not utilize night bombing at all and used my strategic bombing very little in this game.
