I didn’t quite get all the settings at Cochin correct and this attack took place. Rather amazed that the Betties avoided the CAP altogether and made their runs on Saratoga. Heart in mouth time for Todd but they all missed.

Morning Japanese sweep of Colombo. The A6M3s missed out as they went off escorting those Betties. Happy with the result as it has dented the fighter presence based at Colombo.

The American carriers have moved offshore from Colombo and are now midway between Colombo and North Male.

Japanese landing TF for Nadi will move 1 hex away this turn whilst being covered by Akagi and Soryu.

I’ve not mentioned this northwestern corner of India for a bit but the Allies are on the move here. I know that between 10-12 LCUs recently left Hyderabad (Sindh) and I’ve been searching for them ever since. This is the first unit I’ve found and it is making for Jodphur. I’m not surprised to see some LRCAP hanging about.

A devastating attack that pulverizes the defenders and destroys 3000 of the 4000 supply that was here… at least the Americans will not reap a great deal of supply when they take the place.

I expected the LCU here to attack but it seems some more heavy artillery practice is the order of the day. All supply has been exhausted and the AF unit is no longer a fighting force. I quite like the stats of the commanding officer, CDR Aihara, L (65 41 05 03 46 00 58 63) so he is ordered to board one of the nearby submarines and get himself back on land to take command of another unit.

I think the loss of Mangalore in such a cheap way has hit Todd hard. Last turn he mentioned that Operation SNAFU had meet with limited success. I expect that he was referring to Lexington being put in the yard and 32nd Division having a hard time of capturing Addu. He also referred to his recon letting him down with his pilots reporting that Addu had no garrison and North Male having a garrison when the opposite was the case. This turn he confided that moral is very, very low and everything is on the verge of collapse (this was stated after making reference to India, Suva and China). I’m not convinced that the Allied position is that dire with ’43 a mere two months away and the USN still to be dented. I suspect Todd’s message does reflect his mindset at present and that he is reeling from almost 11 months of unabated Japanese success and his first major operation not quite coming up to the mark he had hoped for. I’m not convinced either that my position is as impregnable as Todd might think it is. I think that if he had of come at India far harder with his carriers he would have caused me a lot of grief. As it is his carriers must be looking at returning to a decent port to fix up wear and tear as they have been a sea for a while now and I’m about to launch an invasion into Ceylon and attempt to deal with the bastion that the Allies have at Colombo. Suva is a nice side show and hopefully I will get enough AV here to deal with it by the end of the year – I really want to pick up the victory points there now that we are so close to the beginning of 1943.

Looks like I’ve located the main body of the Allied land forces… making their way to Jodphur. Forts here are up to 4 with 2 divisions in residence + another 2 enroute. It does appear to be a formidable Allied force on the way. Perhaps this is the mailed fist of SNAFU.

SS I-123 eludes DD Nepal by hugging bottom.

It will be a story of struggle against the odds if I-123 makes it home with system damage at 47 and flooding at 70 (47 major flooding). No fires and engines are in tip top condition. Perhaps Commander Minowa (excellent leadership and inspirational skills – both +70) and his crew with day and night time ratings of 59 can achieve a mighty feat.

Their move to the east turned into a southern move bearing towards New Zealand after the scout subs had lost contact with the Allied surface TF. Yamaguchi had decided that some time sitting on the sea lanes heading towards southern New Zealand would reap a reward… so far nothing. Fuel was becoming an issue and the time had come to head north towards Akagi and Soryu and the waiting replenishment TFs. A shame, he thought, to waste all this fuel on a Southern Ocean excursion.

450 miles east of Auckland dawn had been noted in the logs of the 12 ships under the command of Rear Admiral Yamaguchi. The fact that the fleet had been sailing in and out patches of heavy rain had also been noted. The leaden skies did nothing to quell the feeling of failure that accompanied the mission to locate and destroy Allied shipping in the South Pacific.

07:28 An urgent message from Kongo is handed to Yamaguchi…. “Troop transports sighted.
American destroyers on course to intercept… Permission requested to detach and commence action”

Yamaguchi snaps out orders. There will be no general engagement. The protection of the carriers comes first. This fleet of transports is not to be lost in this awful weather. The task force is to break off, ensure that scouts pick up the target and stay with it. Finally, a strike is to be launched post haste.

A fat prize has presented itself and far enough away from New Zealand that land based air cannot intercept. The convoy can be picked to pieces at leisure…. If this weather doesn’t interfere.

Despite those ships getting away you sunk a lot of troops plus some valuable APs and AKs. Some ships sunk off screen too, I wonder how many more troops didn't make it?

It would be precious of me to expect that I'd clean up almost every ship that was in this convoy. Tracker reports a jump of nearly 1000 VP from LCU alone in the last 2 days and most of these would be accounted for by this wholesale slaughter. Every time an action finished and a ship went down I was astounded by the men and material lost to the Allied cause. Plenty happy to see some APs which should soon become APAs removed from the board as well.

I think Lady Luck smiled broadly in my direction and this time around favoured one who was prepared to go searching and chance his hand. Knowing where most of those American carriers were as well also helped. Todd admitted that with the amphibious assault focused to the north at Suva and this convoy so close to NZ he felt that it was more than safe to be moving it around. He never considered that the IJN would venture so far south while the Suva operation was underway.

The current board of sunk ships by most valuable. Revenge continues to be misrepresented as US battleship. Lexington is on the board but I take this to be wishful thinking.

Looks like you are on your way to an auto victory.

Yes Bif1961 I do believe that auto victory can be achieved. That is of course assuming that the Allies don’t blindside me and conjure up a bunch of VPs to negate my current lead. I believe that at this point achieving auto victory is there for me to win or lose depending on how I play for the next 2 months. There are plenty of VPs ready to go into the bag by the end of the year (Suva, Trincomalee and Chengtu). If I can pick up these points without a catastrophic battle occurring in that time I could do it. Having said that I am finding that maintaining the 4-1 margin becomes that much more difficult to do with each passing day… something akin to scaling a very tall mountain – the goal is within reach yet remains tantalizing far away.

The other aspect to all of this is that Todd’s (and therefore the Allies) morale is at a markedly low ebb. So much so that the spectre of an Allied offer of peace terms may be on the table within weeks. Todd has confided that he has written off Suva (and from there is expecting an invasion of NZ), China too he has no faith in holding onto (and I suspect that this is the reason for the recent Chinese shock attack at Chungking – the losses suffered here can only make the eventual capture of this base a far easier task) and finally there is India. I’m not sure how much a land campaign in India fits into Operation SNAFU but the beginnings are certainly evidence with LCUs advancing on Jodphur and Multan. Todd has noted that even with stacking limits the Japanese have over 20 LCU at Jodphur (which appears to be his main line of advance) and at the present time he doesn’t have the strength to deal with this. For my part I would be happy to see an attack at Jodphur as I have 3 divisions plus artillery ready to defend behind forts which will reach level 5 on the next turn. Not to mention the ability to bomb the advancing Allies once they are a hex outside of Jodphur. The advance seems to have stalled here and a new threat has emerged on the road leading to Multan. I think that Todd might be looking to see if an advance via the Multan axis would be more profitable. Multan currently has 55th Division plus some supporting troops sitting behind level 4 forts. 2 more divisions are strat moving here plus artillery and 55th Division is moving out to take up a position next to the town and use the rivers as a defensive position. While my forces at Multan are smaller than those at Jodphur the advancing Allied force is also smaller. So unless there is a third, as yet unaccounted for, force on the move in this area I believe that I have a good enough defence to at least hold or defeat an Allied land move in this area.

Over at Ceylon I am about to land 2 divisions and an air HQ now that the threat of the Allied carriers intervening has passed.

Todd’s assessment on his situation at present is this.

Things are awfully black and if I can't accomplish anything I really don't relish waiting a year or more to go onto the offensive. Mid '43 looks eons away and I doubt if I'll have losses made good and the more needed. We'll soon see.

And for a little world perspective on this game at present. Todd offered the following insight on the situation facing the beleaguered Allied leaders.

FDR is worried that he's about to lose the Presidency with the awful war results. Winnie is to face a vote of confidence shortly. Mr Curtain has stopped talking as he's sure that after Suva the Kiwis are toast and then...
