NEGOTIATIONS

Courtesy of a little creative writing from Todd.

The Japanese incursion into India proper has triggered a massive response in London. Rather than lose the Jewel of the Empire secret talks with Herr Hitler have begun. It appears that Churchill's hatred for Stalin could be greater than that of Hitler when India is factored in. FDR is not pleased by these events and he has been in contact with the Kiwis and Aussies.

In response Herr Hitler offered The UK peace, no strings attached. All he asked for in return was a free hand on the Eastern Front. Churchill has hopes of seeing France free of German occupation.

Stalin is, of course, very concerned with rumours coming from the West. He has plans to deal with Japan, but if he has to continue facing the Germans alone these are in danger of being scrapped.

The negotiations between the UK and Germany are clandestine, but rumours abound. Germany agrees to pull occupation troops out of France IF agreements are signed guaranteeing peace between the UK, France and Germany. The Germans also require that Middle East Oil be refined and delivered to Germany in amounts that astound the Brits. They now know that an agreement is almost impossible.

Defending units:
20th Indian Division

23rd Indian Brigade
2nd Hyderabad Base Force

have been keen to see just what awaits me in this base (shortly at Madras too). No doubt the forts should be at least 4 here already. As there is a light urban bonus here as well I am going to await the arrival of 4th Division (451AV), 55th Engineer Regiment (48AV) coming in from Warangal plus 4 artillery units.

All these units are likely to be 100% prepped for Hyderabad except 20th Indian which should only be a fairly recent arrival to the game. I expect the experience levels to be wildly in my favour as the best starting experience level for any of these units is 30. A short wait is in order to get more AV here will mean sacrificing minimal AV from my divisions. I want to keep these divisions as close to full strength as I can in order to maintain the momentum.

33rd Division is waiting in the wings at Bezwada but I am undecided on whether to commit to Hyderabad or Madras until I see just how strong the defences turn out to be.

So now we know what stands in my way at Madras. The big question is just what level these forts are at. I’m fairly confident that the experience levels of 1/2 Det. South Ind. and Madras Fortress has not moved on from their start levels of 10 and 20 respectively. 26th Indian Division and IV Indian Corps were slated to arrive on 1 April 1942 and even with the fog of changed arrival times in play I doubt that either unit has been here for too long. I expect neither unit would have any change in their respective starting experience levels of 30 and 50. The fort level and the fact that Madras is light urban will make this no cake walk for 2nd and 18th Divisions. The order is to bombard for a couple of days until 15th Ind. Engineer Regiment (with 16AV + 48 engineer squads and 16 IJA engineer squads and currently 42 miles away) and 25th Army HQ (currently 101 miles away) get themselves into play for the assault on Madras. Southern Army HQ is based at Bezwada and is close enough to add to the assault if the die rolls go our way.

One of the 4 Allied units at Hyderabad has moved out and is now in the hex northwest of the base. 50th Tank Brigade is the unit which has moved out. The Allied AV at Hyderabad has now dropped by 51 points to 349. Not sure if this is the prelude to a complete withdrawal but not keen anyway to launch an attack until 4th Division has arrived. Unless something big in the way of reinforcement is on the way this withdrawal can only make for an easier acquisition of this base. However I manage to gain Hyderabad I will be pleased to pick up the level 4 AF here. The AFs I have at the moment are far too small to effectively stage bombers and fighters.

After the sinking of those 5 tankers off India Todd is expecting the entire CBI to collapse like a house of cards. I’m not so sure. He has referenced the short legs of the RN compared to the IJN and much as I would like to deal with the RN I’m not quite in a position to keep my carriers off India for a long period of time. Apart from that I’ve no idea if Todd has simply sent all RN combatants off the board. Todd is looking ahead to my potential use of freed up units should the CBI fall… namely the Soviets and US dilemma of dealing with extra combat units. If I get that far I will be a happy player. Hyderabad and Madras are both on the verge of falling so it is still good news from the Indian front.

I gather I have a leg up in the physiological side of things as Todd says that he is feeling lost and grasping at straws and the clock is against him even with a brilliant recovery. I’ve not played the Allied side so I have no real understanding of just how dire Todd’s position is. I have tremendous respect for the ability of the Allied forces to gather strength and bounce back. Perhaps Todd just needs to sit back and absorb the punishment and keep falling back until the time is right to strike. My job is to decide when the time is right to pull back myself.

After some thinking Todd has informed me that he now has a masterful plan that will either win or lose the war. He says it is flexible and appears to be based on his perception of where I intend heading. He has hinted enough that he expects me to hit Australia as well so that could be his thinking. I do know from little bits and pieces that I’ve picked up that Todd has been building up Adak so an early northern approach could also be on the cards… hoping to catch me while my attention is drawn well away from the Home Islands. Todd says that if he is wrong he is done for… we shall see and perhaps it will be soon.

INDIA

Sub attack near Koggala at 27,52.

Japanese Ships
SS I-157

Allied Ships
CA Cornwall, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

I had thought Cornwall would have made her way to a northern Indian port after taking a single torpedo hit some weeks ago. It seems she scooted off to Ceylon to make repairs. Todd confirmed that this was so and he was looking for her to make good an escape after being repaired. Happily for me she ran straight across the path of the only sub in the area capable of making an intercept and an exceedingly fine intercept it was. Sinking sounds heard and 3 Walrus float planes on the downed planes list so there is no doubt that this cruiser is off the board.

Mixed results here and the fact that I screwed up and sent the LCUs to the wrong destinations meant that they attacked without any preparation bonus. On the bright side I’ve picked up North Male on the cheap and now have I/143rd Infantry Bn available to help out with the debacle further south. II/143rd at Deigo Garcia is in good shape with AV of 33. They are on par with the defenders and that is where I/143rd will head to first. III/143rd is in terrible shape at AV of 2 and the rest disabled. They have a splinter left on one of the transports so they are heading back to a safe port to rebuild should (as I expect it will) the unit be lost. If III/143rd make it through the rest of the day they may gain some respite as a 3 battleship bombardment TF is on the way deliver some nasty treatment to these stout defenders. The carriers, which are on the return from the western side of India will also lend a hand in subduing these defences.

As for the damage to our ships. CL Yubari is at 03 09(04) 00 28 – fires not good but should be controlled. xAK Kenyo Maru is at 13 06(03) 01(01) 44 – fires worse but on the hopeful side the crew of this ship is at 51 experience in day time so that may be helpful. xAK Xenyo Maru is at 04 00 00 03 – should not be a problem and xAK Okikaze Maru 06 00 00 40 – if we are going to lose a ship this is the one I expect to go first. xAK Naruto Maru is at 04 00 00 00 and so all is good here.

All up I’m not too unhappy with the result given it was a land grab based more on bravado than super good planning.

Bombay is bombed – this was likely to happen with the way things had been ambling along (read the Japanese player got a bit too complacent). Somewhat surprised that recon and sweep had not picked up these fighters. Todd says that they had been here for a while so perhaps the fact that they are set to training has helped disguise their presence. The fall out is a rethink on how I will go about sieging Bombay.

A little filling in of the current to and fro between Todd and myself. A mere couple of weeks ago Todd was pondering just what to do. He confided that I’d managed to isolate the entire CBI and he expected it to collapse like a house of cards and that once this happened the Soviets would be unable to cope with the increased LCUs that would then be available to the IJA. By extension the USA would face the same dilemma. I, on the other hand, tend to look at the whole Japanese enterprise and think of it as a pack of cards that could easily fold like a pack of cards when I finally do meet up with a determined defensive line. Todd is a gentleman to play against and amid the constant pummelling of his forces he remarked, ‘You have no idea how well you've done to date and even if I recover brilliantly, doubtful, the clock will be against me because I've lost so much.’ It is hard to be fully conversant with just how well I have been doing but I do know that I’ve come up with some good results against his land forces when caught out on transports at sea. Those results in large measure gave me the impetus to push on and open a campaign of conquest in India.

Then a day later Todd throws the following my way… ‘Got it! A masterful plan that will either win or lose the war. If I'm wrong I'm done for, maybe. I think that it's flexible enough to work. We'll see. Even if you don't do what I think you will the plan will put me in a strong position to wage the war. If not, oh well.’ Sounds to me like Todd has signalled the end of Sir Robin in this game and from here on in the Allies will be looking to be more aggressive in their attitude.

Three days ago Todd let me know that ‘with Operation Snafu now in it's active stage planners around the globe wonder if the Japanese are really invincible.’

Today I’m greeted with ‘are your intel weenies digging for info about Operation Snafu. Wouldn`t it be great if the Allies could all attack some point on the map simultaneously. Of course I don`t mean all concentrated on the same point.’

Where am I, then, in light of this new found bravado emanating from my erstwhile foe? I have no doubt that Todd does have a plan. I suspect too that it is probably quite the radical departure from his usual playing style – that being one of taking time and building up overwhelming force before beginning to beat back the tide of Japanese expansion. I have a feeling too that he is making something of a play to get in my head.

I can’t help feeling that something is indeed on the way and my expectation is that the Pacific has to be the place where it will happen. Todd has to know that I’ve got KB split and now is the time to strike. I have Zuikaku, Shokaku and Soryu + Shoho at Rabual and they will be ready to sail in 1 more day. My Pacific islands are not yet in a state where they will be ready to withstand an early assault… assuming that this is the intent of Operation SNAFU. The rest of KB will be transitioning to the Pacific but they will be weeks away as they are still several days out of Singapore and will need dock time. They have done their work in India and Japanese LBA will have to work out how to rule in this theatre from now on.

The fact that I have most of my independent divisions in India also has to help embolden the Allied cause.

So with the close of April ’42 imminent get ready for some Allied counter strokes in May. My plan is to see what unfolds and look towards using my Pacific carriers as counters where they can do so without getting hit from the hammer of what will undoubtedly be the full combined weight of the USN.

I have been pondering further on the nature of Operation SNAFU. I'm now leaning toward it being an operation where Todd is looking to set up a forward base without encountering any interdiction from Japan. I'm inclined to think that the Pago Pago/Suva area is a likely candidate for such a beginning.

Another month completed and now for the round up of things as they stand.

First up the gains in India. I've not done China this time as nothing has changed apart from the capture of Pakhoi.

The projected plan in India is the capture of Bombay and the destruction of all units trapped here. It is of course very dependent of what LCUs Todd has stashed here plus the mandatory road blocks on the way into town. I have plenty of divisions in good shape backed up by armour and artillery plus air power as well. I am also considering the capture of a west coast port to support naval affairs on this side of India.
