I’ve never read it.

But, The Naval History and Heritage Command have an online reading room.
They have just opened a new website which is not as good as the old website but much original source material is still there if you can find it.

You might be interested in this: Beans, Bullets, and Black Oil.

An AAR of logistics in the Pacific War.

The appendix is very useful.
Of special interest are the many rare photographs of support vessels.
The Glossary of Abbreviations is one of the best I’ve seen.

Thanks for the great reference. I was just wondering if maybe there was a different viewpoint after 60 years

Is bullets, beans, and black oil any good?

Also, by the same author is Ships, Salvage, and Sinews of War for the Atlantic/Mediterranean theater.

There is a similar book: U. S. Naval Logistics in the Second World War which is here.

John,

Yes it is good. Admiral Spruance liked it.
Kind of a dry read though.

Reading Beans, Bullets, and Black Oil; I found it interesting that Fleet Oilers were transporting airplanes, and how did they find room for 60+ planes on those CVE's? and just what is "star-gaging 6-inch guns "?

Gun maintenance

When guns are fired metal is removed from the barrel.
A star gauge is a rod for measuring gun wear.

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Star+gauge

How it is done is in the last paragraph:
http://fas.org/man/dod-101/navy/docs/swos/gunno/INFO7.html

CVE’s pack their decks with planes that have folding wings.

Something I did not know:

From the abbreviations:
YP - District Patrol vessels were called ‘Yippies”
