August 17th, 1942 The United States Navy had some success against the Royal Navy, but was shocked at the strength of the Kriegsmarine. A very powerful force of U-boats and surface ships sortied and the USN took up a defensive posture in response. The RN and KM will be a major challenge as many of our forces are far away in the Pacific. This shapes up to be the naval battle of the century. The U.S. Army continues to pester the British and French in Africa. The lack of infrastructure is causing things to move slowly here, but eventually we will make our presence felt. As the Japanese commented about South America, there just is not much in Africa. Still it represents the stripping of the Commonwealth from Great Britain. The British have lost Canada. In Australia, Sydney is under assault by U.S. forces, and we expect it to fall next month. The other Australian cities are items on the American agenda. India is nearly conquered by the Chinese, Singapore and most of the Indies have fallen, and the Middle East is threatened. The British Empire is being dismantled. The question must be asked : was the declaration of war on Germany and Italy a mistake. It seems the answer is "Yes". We underestimated the power of these nations. The Soviet Union is also under pressure from the four powers, and has asked us for increased aid. In response China has allied itself with the USSR and is sending forces west to help the Red Army. The USA is not allied yet to the Soviet Union, but will do so when appropriate. Three powers versus four powers in a war for the world.
