Here's the USSR-playable version of Closing the Kurile Gap. I kept the same forces exactly as the US-playable one.

Please give it a try and let me know if anything is broken. (FlankerK, I know you like the Russian ones! )

ok well..
very interesting scenario

few issues:

1. around 12:32 local time DDH Shirane find US RGM-109C above her and Japan became hostile to US, is this intended?
2. project 56U in KPUG 2 ?
3. Japan have "Gods Eye" on (not sure about the consequences) is this intended?

4.Iturup/Burevestnik AB air defence , in 1989 ,in reality this is two #16 - SAM Bn (SA-2f Guideline [S-75M Volkhov]) + six #1646 - SAM Bn/2 (SA-8b Gecko Mod-1 [9K33M3 Osa-AK]) (another two pair of #16 - SAM Bn (SA-2f Guideline [S-75M Volkhov]) and three Osa-AKM batalions ( six #1646 - SAM Bn/2 (SA-8b Gecko Mod-1 [9K33M3 Osa-AK])) dispersed on other Kuril islands, there is no S-300 and S-125 on Kuril islands in reality

5.Representation of 11th Air-Defence Army, in this army there is four brigade/regiments of S-300, 1 brigade(10 #403 - SAM Bn (SA-10b Grumble [S-300PS])) + 1 regiment(6 #403 - SAM Bn (SA-10b Grumble [S-300PS])) near Vladivostok, one regiment(3 #1495 - SAM Bn (SA-10b Grumble [S-300PS])) protect Dolinsk-Sokol AB, one regiment(3 #1495 - SAM Bn (SA-10b Grumble [S-300PS])) protect Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky fleet base and Elizovo AB, also every brigade/regiment have "regimental" radar in case of S-300PS #1627 - Radar (Tin Shield B [5N59S/36D6]) keep in mind that regimental radar should be placed on best available elevation but on distance not bigger than 1/4 of max range of S-300PS missiles from protected object, around regimental radar on distance 10-35 km in equilateral triangle there is three stations of radio-technical reconnaissance(SRTR) , for S-300PS this is #835 - Vehicle (Soft Ball ELINT [KRTP-81 Ramona]) and #834 - Vehicle (Trash Can ELINT [KRTP-86 Tamara]), but since this is Far East most likely this will be Ramona, also to each regiment/brigade usually assigned two Jammer (funny thing older SPN-30 and SPN-40 we most likely see near USSR S-300PS
availible only for Russia [1991-] and more modern SPN-1/2/3 (2 and 3 first appeared in 90s) are for USSR) you cam use #2188 - Vehicle (Big Cap [SPN-40] Jammer) or #769 - Vehicle (Heart Ache [SPN-1/2/3] Jammer) also near air-defence regiment/brigade on best possible height installed, assigned to regiment/brigade, something like #333 - Radar (Tall King A [P-14]) or #1335 - Radar (Spoon Rest D [P-18])

positions of S-300PS in Far East at the end of 80s usually protected by S-125 (so usually it is regiment S-300 + regiment of S-125 in defence of S-300)

Oh Ya....I noticed God I was on for the Japanese when I was playing the US side… and I am having a lot of buggy problems for a couple hours into the scenario… two of my destroyers in my CVN-TG now will not respond to speed settings.... Many of my AIM7 shooters kern and lose missile lock when their missiles were three quarters to target even though they are not in threat…And I have been having to manually turn them the whold lock... So if I can't figure out what's going on… I'm going to have to give up on this… Which is a shame as I am many many hours into it… And it's a really cool scenario…

No. That would definitely break the scenario. Did you happen to re-load a previous save and see if it was repeatable?

2. project 56U in KPUG 2 ?

Same forces as in the US version.

FYI, I went off what the book author said. He often just said "three cruisers" without giving classes. So I had to guess. I was also running out of real Soviet cruisers when looking at all the theaters in the world the book covers. Apparently the author was giving the Soviets a little more firepower than they really had. For me, it's just one ship. I'm not losing any sleep over it.

There should be no consequences. Japan is not playable.

Can I send you my next scenario and have you place all the Soviet forces?

I reported this as a bug but got a "working per design" response. Feel free to post a save showing this in the tech support. I tried already.

Civil war in Japan! US launches coup attempt! It's 3:32 Zulu and the media is reporting incidents of "friendly fire" between the US and Japan. The zampolit says this was all planned. I will never doubt him again!

It seems the postures of the US and Japan sides have gone hostile to each other for some reason. I've set them back to friendly, but a Japanese P-3 and an American EC-130 are both down. Hopefully they won't revert to hostilities again.

Breaking news! US sub torpedoes Japanese fishing boat in La Perouse straits! All feared lost.

(Weapons already underway before I changed things back to friendly, I guess.)

American ambassador blames Soviet Union for sinking. Japanese issue stern diplomatic note to Soviet delegation.

('Japanese unit sunk' has been fired. I bet this counts against me somehow...}

Japanese down flight of American cruise missiles in coastal waters. Japanese ambassadors states "Unapproved firing of weapons of potential nuclear nature is a grave violation of Japanese sovereignty, and will not be tolerated."

Japanese tanker burns after American missile hit! Admiral protests "Once we shoot'em we can't bring'em back!"

(A long range Tomahawk shot finally reaches its target.)

AndrewJ,

Yeah, apparently it wasn't a good idea to have the US fire Tomahawks over Japanese ships while Japan is still neutral. I fixed that in the released version.

Love the news reports!

I finished this one off, coming around the E coast of Japan with my land-attack Bears acting as a giant flight of ECM planes to shield the Backfires, so the F-14s didn't get to me in time. Quite enjoyable! Any other Yokes Mega-Scenarios (tm) in the works?

One thing that puzzled me was that although I made efforts not to trigger the Japanese (staying out of airspace, not attacking any land targets in Japan, not engaging any of their units) they seemed to flip over to hostile almost any time I fired a weapon at the Americans, usually at the moment of weapon firing. I tried this a few different ways, and went looking through the events, but there didn't seem to be anything that would cause that to happen, except for the "observed attacking a friendly unit" rule. Was that intentional?

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I have a couple more "big" scenarios for the Norwegian theater, but my working pace has been very slow.

Plus, when I compare my work to Gunner's excellent Northern Fury collection, I feel a bit...inadequate.

That is definitely not per design. Does this happen after a specific time? Or is it all the time?

I spent a lot of time trying to get the postures to work correctly. I hope it's not broken.

Tried this out and the TLAM strike does seem to trigger the Japanese as hostile. Oddly enough it didn't actually affect much as I kept my aircraft grounded at first. In the end the one Victor III tracked the CVA group but didn't get into shooting range, however the Foxtrot did. All six wake homers fired and I think four struck for an immediate victory at 190 points.

Always funny to sink something with a Foxtrot!

Wonder if the TLAM strike is worth delaying? They come in over the DDH group and get classified as hostile.

That...just shouldn't happen...

Did you play the released version, or the one from this thread? I removed the strike in the released version.

Thanks for the feedback!

The scenario description says it is US-only playable, but it can only load the USSR side
