Italian liner Principessa Jolanda with defective ballasting, errors in calculations, portholes were left open, and a donkey boiler exploded. I like the song:

I know the type all too well.
I worked for a senior manager who pretended to be dumb and asked everyone to put things in the simplest possible terms. It took a while before people realized that she really was that dumb

Others managers pretended to be dumb (not being arrogant was in vogue at my company), but this one really was mega-dumb. She kept her job for ~10 years even after this became obvious. She was, however, for what it's worth,a really nice person.

Just over one more day of work before some very welcome vacation time. Not going anywhere except maybe to the range, on a picnic with my better half, and out on my bicycle.

Did you look at the video? If you ever look at a ship being launched sideways, they tip over on their side pretty good. It is like leaving the hatches open on a submarine when it dives.

They salvaged the ship after it was launched, using the engines on another ship. There was no maiden voyage.

She may not have been very smart, intelligence wise, but if she could get people to do their jobs and do them well, then she was an effective manager. That is much better than someone who thinks that they know it all but really do not.

Would you rather have a manager who could motivate people to do their best or a smart a$$ know it all whom the workers did not like?

I had a college instructor in some computer classes who was a good technician but not a good instructor. I would rather have had a good instructor than someone who tried things 4 or 5 times really fast that did not work, then finally did what worked then said "Do what I did!" I could not keep up and got lost. I did not learn much in that class about Linux.

Very fortunate that the owners signed the "Machinery Donation Card" before the ship was even launched! I'm sure that sped up the transplant before rust set in.

At the end of my career I had a team of about 950 professionals. Each of them knew their stuff way better than I knew their stuff. My job (IMO) was just to make sure they weren't slacking off and to give them aircover when internal audit or other depts tried to dump on them for when they screwed up (the other depts, not the one I was running).

It was an interesting life lesson in honesty and integrity.

At one place I was working at my manager was also assigned a new guy who happened to be a winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics!

No doubt it was not the normal managerial role, and the guy had been contracted to do a very special project so the manager was there more to help get what they needed in the company rather than to check on them and do appraisals!

But my manager joked to me that this was the first time he had been told he was dumber than his reports by an international public committee!

is there not a common saying that a good manager is one who can get the best out of the guys smarter than they are?
