Unfortunately I missed out on the short window to upgrade from "Shadows" to "Universe" due to a big move and busy time in my life. I now have some free time to dive back into the game. I would like to upgrade to "Universe", for all those cool mods. I bought the entire series at full price, surely the option to upgrade should be available to me. Why not just make the upgrade available indefinably to all "Distant Worlds Shadows" owners? I'm ready to give you some money to upgrade!

That sounds frustrating. Had it happen with various Total War games. Buy the original, add a few of the optional upgrades, then a 'collector's edition' would be released with all of the optional content for less than buying the rest of the content to my already bought base copy... but no choice available but to buy it all over again, or spend more than that again. All poor options for someone who paid early and often.

I hope they create another opportunity for folks in your situation with DW:U.

To be fair, I can also understand that this must be a very niche market, and hard to come out with any sales / deals. Unless you have a lot of units sold, it's hard to keep the $/unit down.

I'm sorry we can't reinstate the upgrade, but this may help:

Thanks for letting me know about the 30% sales. It's a good sale. Because of the 80$ price tag for Distant Universe, it only brings it down to 56$, the cost of a brand new AAA game. I just can't justify paying that kind of money for an upgrade when I can get a brand new game for the same price. With so many great 4x space game on the horizon I may have to close the door on this one and move on. To bad...

Upgrade discount should be valid for all owners of previous expansions, no matter what time frame. Charging $80 for an expansion is ludicrous, no matter how you spin it.

The thing is, they're not charging $80 for an expansion, they're charging $80 for the platinum version of the game, which is unfortunately also the only way to actually get the contents of the expansion at this point. And while I agree that $80 is quite an eye-watering price for a game, I can sort of rationalize it by looking at the entertainment per hour cost relative to many other activities.

Today might be the last day to get that 30% discount...

I doubt it's possible, but I'd be willing to gift my serial key to someone that can actually use it and help at least one person. Do my good deed for the day. :D

56 is actually pretty good for what you get. I have in the past purchased the harpoon series of games one after the other because the improvements justified it. That is true here. Just look at some of the mods. The Star trek Picard Era is a prime example. Small price to pay for the entertainment value....gp

I do agree that games like this offer a lot of entertainment value for the money. The problem is that I already own the game. I just want the extra 10% of content that was added. (or whatever percentage of content that you can estimate.) Repurchasing the entire game again, even for 56$ for a relatively small amount of extra content is still unthinkable. I still think that the updated game should be available at a discount proportioned to the extra content, indefinitely for registered owners of the entire series. Look at it as a "thank you for supporting our game. As a registered owner of our game, here is a generous discount towards the latest version of Distant Worlds Universe, enjoy!" I can dream...

Hi Garth,

That is in fact exactly what we did and I'm very sorry that you missed it. The goal was to have it up for long enough and with enough notification that all previous owners would be able to upgrade. A very large number did, but our mistake was in allowing it to expire. Once expired, because people who could have upgraded have since purchased it at full price, there is now no practical solution that wouldn't end up with someone feeling that we'd given them a bad deal.

Regards,

- Erik
