I've heard about distant worlds several times and it sounds like something I'd like. When I've looked before the price always seemed rather high to take a chance on a game or developer I'd never tried. Often with an impending expansion pack, which seem to be considered essential buys, to further add to the cost.

Yesterday I saw there was an easter discount and the game was available as a complete package so I got my calculator out, tap tap tap, and worked out that the price was £30. A little on the high side perhaps, but a price I'd definitely consider paying.

So I checked out the reviews of the universe version, skipped through a few bits of gameplay footage and decided that it looked promising enough to be worth the money.

Added it to basket, applied the voucher... Wait, what? £36? They're showing the price in pounds, they've even set a price in pounds (.99p ending) but they're not following normal UK pricing practice by showing the price including VAT?

Grumble, grumble, grumble. Well, I suppose it's only £6 more. So I get on with the checkout process, fill stuff in. tap, tap, tap, hmmm... Why am I entering personal details before I've created an account? How am I going to download the game in future? Look in the Store FAQ. Nothing there. Go to the store front page, "The download is available to you for thirty days after your order". Forget that then, this isn't 2001 anymore.

Hmm, so how much extra is the boxed version? Base price, plus 20% VAT, minus 30% discount... £45. Sod that, I'm not paying 50% more without reconsidering it. When does the voucher end? 'on the 7th.' That's a bit ambiguous. I'll have a think about it tomorrow if it's still running. Note to self: Check where these are dispatched from to make sure there's no customs charges on top of that.

As the news post disappeared today I'm guessing the voucher has expired. So that's how I almost bought distant worlds.

I could have redeemed the steam key to be able to redownload in future but I prefer not to use steam. I'm not keen on Valve's advertising model of a storefront on every computer.

I notice it's also available directly through the steam storefront now though. I had a look in my usual favoured game store (Gamersgate) and a couple of others but I couldn't see it on those. Can anyone suggest somewhere that sells Distant Worlds Universe as a simple installer or at least uses a storefront/advert-free client to install it?

This site - simply go up one level and there is a link called 'Buy Distant Worlds: Universe Now!'

I am not a steam user I have always downloaded via the Matrix games site.

The text is phrased poorly. Your original download link will expire but that doesn't mean you can't download the game again. You just have to ask Matrix to reactive your download link.

And I don't know about the Steam version, but the Matrix version is DRM-free as far as I can tell, except for a key check required to progress with the installation.

That's just the link you get with your order. You can actually download as many times as you want in the future. If you are logged into our site when you purchase, your purchase is auto-registered and you can automatically get a new download link at any time through our Members Club. If not, you can get one through our Help Desk.

Our installer is also DRM-free. You just need the file and the serial key and you don't need to re-download or be connected to the internet, etc. to reinstall it in the future on a different system.

Regards,

- Erik

can support the statements above me, i could download the game several times over several years. the only thing which is limited is the particular download link, after a certain period of time u have to request another dl-link which is completely automated.

Well, the description of the download option on the page of the store really doesn't correspond to that. While I do believe you when you say that's how the system works in practice, I'd feel much better if that was written in the description in the store.

That's what's put me off the Matrix Games store. Things like that and the 'hidden' VAT make me wonder if there's anything else I might have missed. Learning that the download option operates differently than as described (or at least, heavily implied) is nice to know on a practical level but doesn't exactly reassure me that I'd get what I think I'd get.

I've had a better look for alternatives places to buy and couldn't see any I'm guessing distant worlds isn't available in stores other than Matrix Games and Steam yet?

That's correct - those are the only two stores with the latest Universe release and if you purchase here, you get a free Steam key as well.

It's easy for us to not realize things like this that confuse a new customer - once something becomes familiar you can easily overlook things. I'll pass along your feedback in the hopes that we can make it more clear.

Regards,

- Erik
