Romulus and Remus systems added to the Romulan Star Empire.......

As you see in the map there are around 27 systems in the Romulan Empire so I can probably finish mapping them tomorrow.
Klingon Empire similar and probably finish in 2 days time.

The Federation on the other hand has hundreds of systems for me to map....this could take 2 to 3 weeks just to do the federation systems.

Last night I mapped the Romulan sector containing their home world of Romulus.
I then completed the Klingon sector with the Klingon home world of Qo'noS
These are shown as completed in the map.

As this mod can be played using the map where all the races will have their home planets in their correct systems, not random, if you are playing the Federation you will always start out from Earth in the Sol system. The way I am playing this mod is that you have random enemies so you do not know who is going to be around. So as the terrans you expand right and you may or may not meet the Romulans..... or instead of Romulans you may meet Klingons who expanded up into Romulan space.

And if you are unlucky you may find by going south to the Mutara sector (bottom left of this picture) that you are met by no other than Khan Noonien Singh at Ceti Alpha V. Khan has now been added to the mod and you can see where he will be found if he is one of the random races in the game.

This picture shows how close Khan is to Terran space...as well as to Klingons if he should try and pick a fight with them.

The map here of the Beta Quadrant shows what will clearly be a hotspot of activity in the mod with the Terrans, Vulcans, Romulans, Klingons and Khan all shown here.....and of course we have the Orions in the middle of the lot.

You can of course play Distant Worlds Universe with any races you want and random starting locations and still use my map.

Roy

Khan Noonien Singh is now well and truly in the mod and he will more than likely be a major issue for you in combat.

Yesterday I had posted that Khan would be based at Ceti Alpha V...... however this timeline is before the time when Kirk meets Khan so Khan would certainly not be at Ceti Alpha V at all.

The official story goes that Khan and his crew were released from their sleep by an unknown race and Khan has set them up on an unknown planet where he continues his plans to dominate the galaxy..... his plan being the Eugenic Wars 2.

If Khan had won the original Eugenics War he would have been a serious threat to the Klingons and would have wiped out the Romulan Empire..... With the defeat of the Romulans, the Augments then began conquering more species. Races such as the Breen and Tholians were conquered at the hands of the Children of Khan. Vulcans, Andorians, Betazoids and Trill were next and eventually the Klingon Empire fell to Khan. This resulted in an alliance between the Bajoran and Cardassian races who sought to fight against the genetically engineered Humans who were the stronger power between the two factions.

These are the plans of Khan Noonien Singh in this mod and he and his Augments will be a major force. They will not be based at Ceti Alpha V but will be based on a random location.

I photoshopped a picture of Khan on his spaceship which may or may not be the Botany Bay herself. The only pictures of TOS era Khan around were of him on the Enterprise so I needed to create a new picture of him.

Though Khan and his followers made up a race that would have been known as the Children of Khan, I am calling them Khans Augments in the mod.

Now started mapping Federation space....huge task with number of systems in the Federation. I will be working hard on the mapping today and hopefully have the entire Beta Quadrant mapped within the next 24 to 48 hours. At that stage I will start posting some other things I am working on plus an idea that I have which will make Distant Worlds even more Star Trekky and similar to the tv series and movies... have to see if it works.

With the timeline of the mod I am looking at the idea that the existing members of the Federation have not yet aligned with the Terrans so that Vulcan, the Andorians, Tellarites, Andarians and so forth will need to be brought across to the Federation via Diplomacy.

As this mod is set after the First Contact is made with the Vulcans I need to look at the status Vulcan has with Earth...... I have an idea for the storyline which would explain why the members of the United Federation of Planets needs to be aligned with again and explain why at the same time I am not in Jonathan Archer's era and in the era just prior to Kirk.

There will be 2 story lines to this mod depending on whether you are playing with the map where Terrans, Klingons, Romulans etc start out at Earth, Qo'Nos and Romulus or start out from another planet.

That is the great thing about Star Trek is that stories like this are possible by using intervention or actions by a person or a race which effects the entire galaxy.

Building the Andorian sector.......

When I have completed Version 1 of the map I will go in later and add a number of star systems into the Klingon and Romulan space where the star system was previously unnamed but I have since found their names.

This will give the Romuluans and Klingons more systems to colonize...but they will both most likely try to invade each other or the Federation and take their space.

Janus VI which I have just added here , bottom left of the Andorian sector, is of course where the Horta are based.... Horta being the silicon based lifeform that were featured in Devil in the Dark.

Finished mapping Federation, Klingon and Romulan space in the Beta Quadrant...... I will add Tholian spaces etc as I add those races and will complete mapping the Alpha Quadrant next week.

(Green squares show the areas mapped into Star Trek - Where No Man Has Gone Before)

Today I will take a break from the mapping and work on adding more ships, characters and resources.

I have over 200 resources from the Star Trek world and I need to bring those down to 80 resources.

Looking at minerals alone, there were 125 minerals alone mentioned throughout each of the tv series and movies.

For this timeline in the mod I would look only at what was mentioned in Enterprise and in the TOS era.

Star Trek Enterprise - 15 minerals mentioned
Star Trek - TOS era - 28 minerals mentioned

Some of the TOS minerals were

Cast Rodinium
Alternate name for rodinium. Episode: Balance of Terror (TOS), 1966

Diburinium
A metallic substance of high density used by the Kelvin. Episode: By Any Other Name
(TOS), 1968

Lithium Crystal
This mineral was required to fuel the early generations of warp drive engines, prior to the
discovery of dilithium. Lithium crystals were laboriously processed at lithium cracking stations
such as the one on Delta Vega. Lithium crystal was also used as a synonym for dilithium on one
of the very first episodes. Episodes: Where No Man Has Gone Before (TOS), 1966, Mudd’s
Women (TOS), 1966

Magnesite-Nitron
Produced in tablet form, this mixture can create heat and illumination when crushed. While
magnesite is the name of a real mineral (magnesium carbonate) and nitron is a synonym for
nitrogen or the trade name of a type of fertilizer, the qualities ascribed to this substance preclude
it being a mixture of the two real substances. Episode: Friday’s Child (TOS), 1967

The remaining resources will be picked up from a separate list of 240 resources that I have covering all Star Trek eras but I need to separate the resources from this list for the TOS period or prior to it.

The Fesarians are now added to the mod....... I created the picture below to show what a battle with them would look like.

the Fesarians are known as First Federation and were seen in the Corbamite Maneuver in first season of TOS.

The First Federation are a political and military organization located in the Alpha Quadrant, located on my map above somewhere to the right of Breen space....took a while to find their system location.

The Fesarians can be a force to reckon with as seen in the Corbamite Maneuver and were around in the 23rd and 24th centuries.

After much thought about the Borg and the concept I had earlier about the Borg Queen being young, I have decided the story line would not work and have changed the story so that the Borg Queen we know is the one who goes back to the TOS period.

Romulans!

I think there have been at least 3 different types of uniform used by the Romulans over the Star Trek history.

Below is the look the Romulans have in the mod...... based on what I think were the only 2 episodes featuring Romulans in the TOS tv series

I am now picking up even more characters for the Federation and other races.

There are many actors shown in TOS who have not been credited for a role they played....example a yeoman holding a clipboard.

So I search imdb for the episode I am looking at, look for the name of the actor who have not been credited, search on their names and most of the time I will get a better picture of their role on Star Trek and if their character in the episode had no name but I have a decent picture I then use the actors name as the character name.

This will also work for Klingons, Romulans and other races shown in the TOS era....except perhaps the name.

The interesting thing is that a few of the pictures I see for an episode I do not recall seeing in the episode. For example in The Cage episode an actor called Robert Phillips played a Starfleet officer on the Orion colony. I don't recall that at all.... which means I should watch the episode again.

On top of that there is this page
http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Category:TOS_performers

which gives me the names of all actors that played any part of any race in the 3 years of TOS.
Total number of actors listed 525

I will use this to crosscheck for any Federation characters I have missed and for non Federation I will add those characters into the appropriate race folder...eg Klingon,Romulan, etc

So the starfleet officer shown below is added to the mod.

Another example is that my search found an actor who played a trader in The Cage.. I don't recall him either but he too is added.

I have added in most if not all of the Federation characters from Seasons 1 through 3

With the other races I have so far gone through the episodes of Season 1 and added 175 charcters from other worlds to be added to the mod. I know there are likely to be more and I will pick them up at a later date.

Below is an updated figure of how many characters are to be added to this mod

There could be some Tribble brewing in the galaxy and no doubt Harry Mudd is behind the Trouble the Tribbles will bring to the mod. I am still looking at what the events will allow me to do but if they let me do what I think I can do then Harry and his Tribbles will be causing mayhem somewhere in the Alpha or Beta Quadrant.

Meanwhile a report from the planet Thasus indicates that Charles Evans has escaped the planet and is reported to have hitched a ride on a Federation cargo ship. All endeavor is being made to reach the Antares ship registry NCC-501.

If you come across it please contact the Thasiuns High Council immediately.

A number of other well known characters will also make an appearance... such as Nomad MK-15c who will likely still be in the Malurian system after wiping out four billion inhabitants.

2237.....

The SS Columbia expedition, funded by the American Continent Institute, has been reported missing in the Talos star group. There are rumors spreading on Earth that the Columbia was attacked by a Klingon war ship or possibly even the Romulans.

President Madza Bral, a female Trill politician, the 15th President of the United Federation of Planets, must respond to the alarming news and prepare the Earth for the increasing threat from both the Romulans and the Klingon Empires.

It is imperative that a new fleet of starships is built to defend the Federation and that attempts are made to reach out and explore distant worlds and seek out civilizations that are willing to join the Federation of Planets.

If we encounter the Romulans or Klingons all efforts must be made to broker a peace deal with them at all costs.

This is where the mod "Where no man has gone before" begins in the Star Trek time line........

I have had a setback with the mod.....

With the work I spent on creating the map for Federation ,Klingon and Romulan space in the last 2 weeks it seems that the map which is saved in the save game is not pointing to text files I am updating in the theme folder for my mod.

So when I add new characters to the mod, these are just not being seen by the save game that was created 2 weeks ago. I had assumed saved games would be picking up data from the text files in my theme folder, but apparently that information is saved with the save file itself prior to my adding characters.

So it seems that I need to work on creating everything else first, test it and make sure everything is ok and then do the map again from scratch.

Will do some more testing tonight to see if I can get around this problem and point my map in the saved file to the updated txt files.

If I have to do the map again it will be the last thing I do on this mod........ but I then need to look at what happens if I do a v2 of the mod and need to change text files and add more characters or tweak some of the files..... I would need to create the map again?

Balance of Terror introduced us to the Romulans and their Bird of Prey with a cloaking device...

As this occurred in the timeline of this mod, I am starting testing tomorrow or on the weekend to add cloaked Birds of Prey to the mod.

Will let you know my results.

A Cloaked Romulan Bird of Prey....

Have finished testing and have added a Romulan cloaked Bird of Prey to the mod...... it took a couple of goes to get the result I wanted without Universe throwing up an error because it could not see the ship either.

But all good now.

If there was no outline around the Bird of Prey you would not know it was there until you zoomed in to the screen as far as you could and then you could see the ship move.

When I first started using Distant Worlds many years ago I think there was an option to turn off the outline..... but I am not sure if that option is there any more......

Next step is to look at the option of making the cloaked Bird of Prey harder to find by other ships..... same scenario as the Balance of Terror episode

Scenario

There is a report that the Romulans are attacking one of your starships .By the time you get there your starship has been destroyed and the enemy has gone ....... or have they?

Below is a picture on the left of the Lexington facing a cloaked Bird of Prey. It is not known if the starship knew the Romulan was there but now the Lexington has been destroyed.

The 2 Federation ships sent to the system are about to leave when one of the captains sees a faint distortion on the view screen. A cloaked Romulan!

As in the Balance of Terror, the Federation and Romulan ships play cat and mouse trying to outdo each other. Who will win?

In easy mode the cloaked ship can easily be seen by the Green Outline around it..... but if you want to have a challenge.... Press D on your keyboard and the Romulan will be invisible....as seen on the picture below right.

Without the green outline showing you the Romulan warbird, winning is hard enough. Imagine if there are 2 cloaked warbirds....or 3...or even 4.

I will need to reduce the size of the green symbol around the Bird of Prey...too big.
