I think we're wondering if El came for Marcus, he might have Wake on his mind too.

But so far, as far as I know, Wake is quiet.

Well yes, I was thinking that perhaps the Wake operation was put on hold while the reaction to Marcus was gauged.

Marcus is close enough to Wake for any forces at Marcus to be able to interdict at Wake.

Was hoping it was only moved to back burner till after things quieted down again in the neighborhood.

CaptHaggard-

Below is your photo of the Marcus Island vicinity.

Hans-

The Wake Island operation (interdiction) did take place. The six American Carriers and three Surface Combat fleets did arrive 120 miles due East of Wake and remained there for a week. El Lobo didn't arrive to invade Wake. You might be right that he postponed the Wake invasion to take back Marcus.

When some of the Japanese Carriers showed at Marcus Island and because I didn't know where the balance of El Lobo's carriers were, I ordered the American Carriers and the the three Combat surface fleets to return to Pearl.

Considering that Marcus Island did get El Lobo's attention (diverting some of his resources to Marcus) and considering it is getting costly for El Lobo to take back Marcus, I am presently looking around to make a second small invasion somewhere just to keep El Lobo hopping around.

Lastly, the August 21, 1942 photo of Marcus Island (see above post) doesn't show any Japanese on Marcus Island. I don't have a clue why I don't see any Japanese troops on Marcus Island considering he made two amphibious assaults and performed a shock attack. Any ideas where that Japanese Infantry Brigade and Regiment went or why I can't see them on Marcus?

Best Regards,

-Terry

Hans,

If I mixed up which Wake operations (his or Rio's) you were referring to, I'm sure Rio will tell you that's par for my course. Sorry about that.

My game hasn't arrived in the mail yet and I'm using my War in the Pacific boardgame maps to try and keep up to this newfangled way of doing things.

I have been reading along though, and it's always good to see you in here!

Cheers, Hag

If they were on Marcus and are not now there are two possibilities:

1. You wiped them out. Check the end of your combat reports (after the last combat of the day) and see if it says something like "Unit XXX surrounded at Marcus Island" or "Unit XXX wiped out by attrition at Marcus Island".

2. You damaged the Japanese AV so badly with your defence that the AI decided it had to abort the landings and re-embark the troops.

Of course maybe that great defensive stand was just "FOW"!

BBfanboy-

I didn't get any message regarding xxx surrounded or wiped-out.

I think the damage to the Japanese AV was significant. As you may note in today's Combat Report (August 21, 1942) below, the Japanese Shock Attack AV is only 59; not much for a regiment and a brigade.

Perhaps, we'll see Japanese troops on Marcus on August 22, 1942. Or perhaps, we'll never know why Japanese troops didn't show on Marcus Island.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Looks as though they were not prepared (% prep-wise) for the landing, and suffered accordingly. Good job!

Marcus Island

as of August 23, 1942

It appears that El Lobo has some Carriers in the Vicinity of Marcus Island and that the Allied ground forces on Marcus are a tad low on supply.

Best Regards,

-Terry

I had suggested that this may not be a cake walk for your opponent given that it is post-Ap. 1st'42...take note and try to get Wake in better shape too. I thought you might get old waiting for the Sig. Ops predicted attack on Wake.

What can you do next to poke a stick in opponent's eye?

Pursuant to your encouragement, 10 Allied submarines have been ordered to find the Japanese Carriers and sink them.

pontiouspilot-

You called it. Several Japanese ships went up in flames, a few Japanese aircraft were destroyed or damaged, and Japanese Infantry was shredded.

Wake Island is in fairly good shape. However, I doubt El Lobo will be in a big hurry now to invade either Wake Island nor Midway Island.

yes, so far, the Japanese have not been sighted in the vicinity of Wake Island.

Combat Report

for

August 24, 1942

On this, the sixth day of the battle for Marcus Island; the Japanese capture Marcus. El Lobo landed more infantry and the out-of-supply and weary 5th Marine Defense Battalion were overwhelmed.

El Lobo paid a heavy price for Marcus Island. A few Japanese transports were heavily damaged and set afire. Other transports were damaged and a CL took a hit. A couple Japanese aircraft were destroyed and a few more were damaged. El Lobo's Infantry took well over 10,000 casualties with a couple hundred squads being destroyed.

Remnants of the 177th USAAF Base Force and 5th Marine Defense Battalion were pulled-out of Marcus and safely made their way to Pearl Harbor where they are resting and rebuilding. I hope they will eventually regain full-strength.

I flagged down Chief Radioman Simmons and had him send the following to the Captain of the SS Permit:

"You've almost convinced me to lay off your secret stash of Scotch. Nice shooting!"

With the loss of the Cats, have we gone blind on the locale of the mini-KB?

Not entirely.

But, for now, we have lost sight of the mini-KB.

Sorry for not keeping up, but what is the state of the death star and the KB. Losses so far in terms of CVs for both sides?

I don't understand the push for Ceylon in the context of his apparently greater aim of a much narrow width in defense for the later years. Just to cause friction? If you feel strong enough, I'd be looking for a Midway-esque situation if possible (probably too early at the moment). Read Jorge's allied AAR for the best possible situation to do this in. Don't seek it, but maybe he'll present you with an opportunity. Has he been actively using his KB at all or maintaining it for later?

Ceylon can become the largest Japanese POW camp of the war if you can cutoff his troops there, but I doubt he sticks around. Maybe this is just an attempt to kill off some hard-to-rebuild British units before retreating back to the relative safety of Burma/Malaya?

Anachro-

I don't know what the "Death Star" is?

Neither side has lost a Carrier.

The Allies now have 7 strong Carriers (the Coppalee arrived at Tacoma a couple days ago and is in route to Pearl to join the other strong Carriers) and one weak Carrier (the Long Island). The Long Island is at Adak with a strong accompanying Surface Combat Fleet.

I will review Jorge's AAR as it regards Midway.

I think El Lobo either knows or suspects that the Allies are going to invade Burma with overwhelming force from India at the end of the Monsoon Season. I think El Lobo knows that it is difficult to supply substantial troops in Burma by land only. Accordingly, I think he wants Ceylon to help sew-up the Bay of Bengal to deny the Allies to supply Burma by the sea. I think he will stay on Ceylon until shortly before the Allies have Carrier superiority. Just a guess, but my best guest.

I haven't decided, but I have been considering the prospect of sending the 7 strong American Carriers and a couple Surface Combat Fleets to the Bay of Bengal and leaving them in the Bay of Bengal just long enough to dump a couple million supply into Burma. The Allies have Akyab. So, if I decide to do this, it will probably happen sometime in December, 1942 (gives me time to take Ramree Island and possibly Pegu; doubtful, but maybe even Rangoon).

Thank you for the input.

Best Regards,

-Terry
