Forgetting about New Guinea entirely seems like an oversight to me. Even a fairly minimal effort could give him a lot of territory to act as a buffer. Even if he does nothing to defend it, it's still worth taking simply to deny the bases.

A busier day today.

The Allies continue to advance in Burma. The Allies now have over 1,000 aircraft in India and continue to build the air capacity of Allied bases along the Burma-India border. All of these air bases along the border are at level three with Chittagong being at level 9, Ledo being at level 5, and a couple others being at level 4. Once all air bases are at level 4 or above, if needed, the Allies will launch substantial airstrikes in Burma. If not needed, the Allies will preserve the aircraft for when they enter China.

Your perception is insightful and your comments are pretty much right on target.

The early Allied Defensive Strategy, as El Lobo and JFB have stated, was: Sir Robin on Steroids.

The early Japanese Offensive Strategy (i.e., expansion of the Evil Empire), coming as no surprise to me, was: Sir Robin on Steroids.

In response to your question "Did you concentrate buy outs for China over expansion in NG and the South and South-Central Pacific?", the answer is yes. From the outset, the Allies made the following firm decisions:

A.) Placing the preservation of India as a top priority.

B.) Preparing India for the launch of Operation Land Shark (i.e., an early invasion of Burma on October 15, 1942 and the Allied push through China to Manchukua and Korea). Operation Land Shark is the Allied Western Offensive. This offensive was selected for four main reasons: 1.) To force a land war in China forcing the Japanese to expend considerable supply; 2.) To force the Japanese to dedicate substantial ground forces and aircraft to garrison China (thereby preventing those ground forces and aircraft from attacking the Allies elsewhere) which the Allies can whittle away and win the war of attrition; 3.) To reduce the Japanese Garrison in Manchukua as soon as possible to have a chance to activate the Soviets as soon as possible; 4.) Lastly combined with Operation Sea Shark (The Allied Eastern Offensive) to hit El Lobo on his Western and Eastern flanks, thereby making it very difficult for the Japanese to reinforce one flank from the other.

Accordingly, from the outset of hostilities with Japan, the Allies made a dedicated and concentrated effort to buy out ground and aircraft forces to stuff India, not only to preserve India, but also to prepare for Operation Land Shark.

Furthermore, from the outset, the Allies have have not intended to take a South to North route to Japan. Accordingly, the Allies have intentionally ignored NG. The Allies intend to also ignore, for the most part, Sumatra, Java, Malaya, and the Philippines.

Operation Sea Shark, tentatively scheduled to launch June 1, 1943 or within a couple months of that date, will first amphibious assault every island of the Marianas Island Chain. Once all the Marianas Islands are secure (hopefully well before the end of 1943), the Allies will go straight for Formosa for two main reasons: 1.) To cut the Japanese in half, thereby through a naval blockade of Japan Proper, prevent the Japanese from getting supply, oil, resources, and reinforcement of Japanese ground forces and aircraft to Japan Proper; and 2.) To be able to supply the ground war in China, Manchukua, and Korea. Every Allied toothbrush will be needed for this relatively early Allied invasion of the Marianas Islands. Consequently, again, NG, etc. is forgone to dedicate all remaining Allied assets to Operation Sea Shark.

I realize that both Operation Land Shark and Operation Sea Shark contain substantial risks. A land war in China without being able to provide substantial supply to China would stagnate the Western Offensive. Striking the Marianas so early, without Hellcats, without carrier supremacy, without substantial ground forces, and without adequate transport ships could turn the invasion into a sizable Allied disaster. However, these are risks the Allies have decided to incur in an effort to get badly needed supply to China and to have the naval blockade of Japan Proper in place by early 1944. Of course, the other huge risk is having a supply path from Pearl through the Marianas to Formosa and from Formosa to Hong Kong.

The Allies hope to catch the Japanese off-guard, meaning, that the Japanese have not stuffed the Marianas prior to June, 1943.

Whether the Allied Western (Operation Land Shark) and Eastern (Operation Sea Shark) offensives prevail or not, one thing for sure, it will be exciting.

P.S. Naturally, there are many more aspects to the two operations and these details have been provided way, way back in this AAR. If I can find the time, I will search through the AAR, find the relevant post numbers, and post the same at a later date herein. Just one example of the details of planning for these two operations is that the Allies have sent considerable AA Regiments and CD units to India along with considerable ground forces and aircraft.

Ignoring NG is not an oversight.

The Allies do not have any intent to take a South to North course to Japan.

The Allies do not wish to fight through the beehive of interconnected and mutually supporting defensive bases that El Lobo will surely have in place throughout the Sumatra, Borneo, DEI, Malaya, the Philippines, etc.

Considering that the Allies intend to strike Japan on its Western and Eastern flanks, and to sever Japans logistics from South to North, I see no reason to expend sorely needed ground and air forces on NG. Furthermore, the Allies own these bases and I do not think that El Lobo plans to expand his Evil Empire any further than he already has. Additionally, with the pressure the Allies are now putting on El Lobo in Burma and with the push to China, and considering all the bases El Lobo already presently needs to garrison and set up defenses for, I seriously doubt El Lobo has enough assets to move into New Guinea.

pontiouspilot and others have also attempted to encourage me to at least send minimal reinforcements to NG and the surrounding area. I think that advice, including your advice, is sound advice. However, I am petrified of being unsuccessful in the Marianas. The entire Allied Grand Strategy depends on securing the Marianas early, in no event no later than the end of 1943. Accordingly, every skirt chasing Allied ground force is being stockpiled at Pearl in preparation for the launch of Operation Sea Shark.

I do take your advice as being most reasonable. I fully realize that I am taking a big risk in that the Allied Grand Strategy I have decided upon may very well result in the Allies being crushed with the Victory spoils going to Japan.

While I think you're idea of going for the jugular kill in the Marianas is sound, consider the advantages of even a limited deployment to the New Guinea region.

A single seaplane tender around the Sorong area would give you amazing search to cover the left flank of your attack on the Marianas. A small airbase will let you use those long-range recon bombers to get a peek at the Marianas early doors.

El Lobo has slowed way down with airstrikes in Burma. The Allies have fourteen AA Regiments just with the seven U. S. Army Infantry Divisions in Burma.

However, in China, El Lobo has pursued a constant air bombardment of the brave Chinese. Today is no exception.

December 11, 1942


Since Capt. Haggard has assumed control of laying mines he has sunk two Japanese ships with his mine-laying efforts. Today a Japanese PB hit one of Hag's mines at Adak Island. The PB is on fire and heavily damaged. I suspect that it will sink long before El Lobo can get the damaged PB to a Japanese port.

A Japanese Battleship bombarded Adak Island causing 93 Allied casualties.

The only other combat action today resulted from air strikes.

The Japanese airstrikes were in China.

From Bangalore, without fighter escort, B-17s and Liberators bombed Colombo from an altitude of 1,000 feet. The casualties to Japanese ground forces were moderate. Two B-17s were destroyed and numerous bombers were damaged.

I hate to be a pessimist but I feel that you need some proper foreplay before you jump straight to the main event! Start with a kiss man! I cannot see sneaking the Marianas from a competent player. This means you need some proximate bases for fleet replenishment and ground based air support. This is even more so if you have not substantially attrited KB. I suggest planning on Truk or Mindanao and then moving east.

The first ground combat in Burma occurred today.

I knew that seven units were in the jungle West of Ramree Island. I didn't know which units were there nor did I know their assault value. I ordered the 45th Recce Regiment to move into the Japanese controlled jungle to assess the enemy's strength. The 45th bumped into the following Japanese units and was destroyed by them:

18th Tank Regiment
56th Division
19th Division
48th Naval Guard Unit
48th Division
Guards Tank Division
2nd Army

Other than the limited combat in Burma, Japanese aircraft bombed cities in China again.

Your post made me laugh.

I am rather concerned that El Lobo will have substantially garrisoned the Marianas Islands prior to June 1, 1943. Additionally, I am extremely apprehensive of fighting the KB at the Marianas Islands with an inferior carrier force with inferior aircraft.

I continue to study, make notes, and make plans to launch Operation Sea Shark from Pearl Harbor on June 1, 1943. It is difficult to keep track of all the details. However, my Operation Sea Shark file is becoming better organized, more and more details have been noted and captured, and a few different options for the invasion have been put to paper.

Your advice is well-taken. The Allies might get creamed at the Marianas in June of 1943.

Though I could change my mind in the future, At this point, I am not willing to make a decision to delay or cancel Operation Sea Shark.

I believe what you are looking at is crossed rifles. It is a symbol of recent combat.

If the Allies hold Ledo, Warazup, Myitkyina, Bhamo. Paoshan, and Tsuyung will 500 supply a day flow into Tsuyung?

If the answer is yes, the Allies will immediately march the following units into China to in an attempt to secure Paoshan and Tsuyung: the 119th RAF BF, the 268th Motorized Armor Brigade, the 11th Chindit Brigade, the 77th Chindit Brigade, and the 87th Mountain Regiment.

Thank you for responding.

The manual states in part, "...if a rail/road/trail path free of Japanese units between Tuyung and Ledo...can be traced..."

If a road or rail connection is required, why even mention Ledo as there isn't a rail or road all the way between Tsuyung and Ledo?

However, I don't see a trail either.

Tsuyung to Rangoon has a rail/road connection, but not Ledo.

December 18, 1942


For the second day in a row, El Lobo suffers heavy losses.

Allied B-24s inflict serious damage to three Japanese DDs, a few xAKs, and several xAPs at Trincomalee.

Allied Anti-Aircraft Guns destroy 25 Oscars near Shwebo.

I hope, considering the damage incurred by his ships at Trincomalee, that El Lobo will decide to vacate Ceylon prior to capturing Trincomalee. However, knowing El Lobo as I do, the good money is on El Lobo dedicating more Zeros to Trincomalee, either in the form of placing his carriers close by or by landing more Zero Squadrons on Ceylon.

Lastly, El Lobo stepped-up the number of aircraft he normally sends to bomb Chungking every single day. I am guessing that the pressure the Allies are putting on Burma has El Lobo concerned that the Allies will break-through Burma into China and save the Chinese at Chengtu and Chungking. Accordingly, El Lobo is throwing all he has at chungking!
