With all due respect, sir, I believe you neglected to mention a second enemy PB struck a mine in Koggala.

Re the mine-damaged PBs that have been quietly stacking up in Adak, I note when he leaves the harbor is empty. Is he seriously making it back to Japan with those leaking little buggers, or is he scuttling, I wonder?

Also, may I recommend a display of Burma in the next few days? It's getting mighty interesting!

Burma & The Burma Road

December 20, 1942

Opening Note

The following is a report on the present status of Burma and Allied tactics to capture Burma.

The present plan is to surround and trap as many Japanese units in Burma as possible. The Allies hope to cut off supply and destroy as many Japanese units as possible.

The troop movements indicated in the following, if prudent and reasonable, may vary pursuant to future circumstances and events.

Along with the ground forces indicated as follows, those ground forces are supported by Headquarter units, Base Forces, and Anti-Aircraft units. The bulk of artillery and armor are attached to either I Australia Corps or the Americal Infantry Division.

Lastly, I will provide the latest intelligence regarding Japanese strength in the subject area.

The Burma Road

The Japanese have one unit two hexes East of Lashio and the fifth Infantry Brigade is believed to be located at Kunming. It is believed that Paoshan is not garrisoned, but that Tsuyung is garrisoned with one unit.

The 87th Mountain Regiment, 77th Chindit Brigade, 111th Chindit Brigade, and 268th Motorised Brigade are strung out between Myitkina and one hex East of Lashio. These troops are presently moving to Paoshan and then on to Tsuyung to open the Burma Road.

Please note the following:

The Chinese have cut the road for supply flowing from the West to Kuniming, Tsuyung, and Paoshan. Further, the Chinese unit just to the North of Tsuyung is 4 movement points from being in the hex next to Tsuyung.

Lashio

Six Japanese units are located at Lashio.

The 24th and and 25th U. S. Army Infantry Divisions are moving to surround Lashio.

Katha

The 41st U. S. Army Infantry Division is at Katha acting as a reserve division but is also moving toward Taung Gyi. The path of the 41st will take them through Meiktila.

Shwebo

Thirteen Japanese units are located at Shwebo.

The 27th and 32nd U. S. Army Infantry Divisions are moving to surround Shwebo.

Mandalay

Four Japanese units are located at Mandalay.

For now, the Allies will bypass Mandalay.

Meiktila

Japanese strength unknown.

The U. S. Army Americal Infantry Division supported by a dozen artillery units is one hex NE of Shwebo. The Americal Division is moving to attack Meiktila.

Four U. S. Army Tank Battalions and three U. S. Army Tank Destroyer Battalions are one hex West of Shwebo (a fourth Tank Destroyer Battalion is straggling behind and is presently one day away from moving to Katha). Combat Report

for

December 20, 1942

It was a busy day in the air. Both the Allies and the Japanese launched numerous airstrikes with both attacking with well over 100 aircraft.

Rather than post numerous air combat reports, I will provide only the results from the air raids for today.

I will also provide the naval results for today.

Hag

Capt. Haggard-

Oops..missed the PB hitting the mine at Koggala.

Good job withe mines, Capt.

Burma display provided as ordered Sir!

*laughing hard*

Your pal,

-Terry

An Update

Regarding

Japanese Strength in Burma

December 21, 1942

What a difference a day can make.

Allied intelligence now indicates that the Japanese have the following number of units at the following locations:

One Hex West of Lashio: 1
Lashio: 6
Shwebo: 14
Mandalay: 11
Magwe: 14
One East of Ramree Island: 6
Ramree Island: 6

Total number of Japanese units: 58

I suspect that when the Allies get closer to Meikilta, Toungoo, Prome, Bassein, and Rangoon the Allies will find more Japanese units.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Combat Report

for

December 23, 1942

I tip my hat to El Lobo, the Evil Emperor of Japan, for he is squared away in Burma.

El Lobo has dedicated substantial ground forces and aircraft to the defense of Burma. He has dug-in at the main cities connected by major roads and railways, thereby forcing the Allies to attack him in the cities or to be pounded by his aircraft in an effort to go around and surround those major cities (i.e., Shwebo, Mandalay, Meikilta, and Magwe). On the West Coast of Burma, he digs-in at Ramree Island and one hex East of Ramree Island. In Eastern Burma, he digs-in at Lashio.

Today, El Lobo's aircraft pounded the Allies in Burma.

The good news is that the Allies have fourteen AA units just with the seven U.S. Army Infantry Divisions. The AA units are destroying Japanese aircraft. Further, the Allies are forcing Japan to expend supply in Burma, and in China.

The Allies intend to continue to take a pounding from Japanese aircraft as the Allies move to surround Shwebo, Mandalay, Meikilta, Magwe, Lashio, Ramree Island, and the hex East of Ramree Island. The Allies will move into the hex East of Ramree Island and pound the Japanese with armor and artillery, and wait for the Japanese supply to dwindle (that is if El Lobo does not retreat before the Allies can surround the Japanese in that jungle hex). The Allies main goal is not solely to push the Japanese out of Burma, but rather to trap and destroy as many Japanese units as possible.

PBY Catalinas sank two Japanese xAKs today, put three hits on Japanese SS I-23, and heavily damaged another Japanese xAK. The Japanese sunk an Allied xAKL. Japanese CLs bombarded Madras, damaging several Mitchell Bombers.

The following Combat Report is long, but I wanted everyone to be able to see how many aircraft El Lobo has in Burma.

Big casualties for such good odds at Colombo. I guess it's the defenders guns/arty. Any suppression that can be inflicted (naval or air bombardments) might help.

The defender had the only bonus for leadership and no negatives plus his forts. However you did lower his forts and the loss percentage was 7% for the Japanese and 8% roughly for the allies. A few days of bombardments you might try another deliberate attack and once the forts are zero go for shock attack.

witpqs-

You do know that I am the Allies, right?

I have been bombing both the Trincomalee port and airfield for a several days now. I have also bombed the Japanese ground forces at Colombo numerous times.

This is the third time El Lobo has attacked Colombo. The first two attacks resulted in similar losses to the Japanese, each time.

Tomorrow I am bombing the airfield again. Present damage to the airfield is 30. Once I get the airfield damage to 50%, I will resume bombing El Lobo's ground forces at Colombo.

Best Regards,

-Terry

I am the Allies.

*grins*

I have had the forts reduced three times. I keep building the fort Level back-up. It is Level 1 now, but I am hoping to have it built back to Level 2 prior to his next attack. He has taken some heavy losses the last two days. Accordingly, I am hoping that he isn't in any shape to attack again for several days.

Best Regards,

Combat Report

for

December 26, 1942

Most all of the combat action involved aircraft bombing strikes launched by both the Allies and the Japanese in Burma, Ceylon, and China. Ground combat occurred near Magwe, near Kunming, and near Ankang. The total looses by each side are posted below

The deeper the Allies drive into Burma, the more the Allies learn of the Japanese strength in Burma. I am surprised by the amount of Japanese ground forces in Burma. The known Japanese strength in Burma is posted below.

A map of Burma is also posted below.

Japanese Losses

Aircraft Destroyed: 36
Aircraft Damaged: 47

Casualties: 1,608
Destroyed: 5
Disabled: 186

Allied Losses

Aircraft Destroyed: 32
Aircraft Damaged: 82

Casualties: 1,902
Destroyed: 44
Disabled: 250

Airbase Hits: 2
Runway Hits: 2

Known Japanese Strength in Burma

Due to ground combat one hex East of Ramree Island and one hex Southeast of Magwe, and from aircraft bombing strikes, some of the units of Japan are know by their military designation. The identified units can be seen by reading back a few posts in this AAR. Besides the Japanese ground forces set forth below, intelligence indicates that the Japanese 52nd Infantry Division is loading on transports bound for Rangoon.

Lashio: 7 units (17,340 Troops, 129 Guns, 0 AFV).
Shwebo: 15 units (46,880 Troops, 412 Guns, 219 AFV).
Mandalay: 12 units.

I'm so bummed about Grayling I'm cracking a Racer 5 NOW...

Will he make it? Kodiak is 24 hexes away... in a crunch he could pull into DH or Cold Bay... if he goes as far as Kodiak without further damage, then maybe he can make Prince Rupert...

When it said "Emergency flotation failed" I thought he was already a goner. We'll see.

We'll see.

Ship damage is most likely to spread just after it occurs, so getting into a port to stabilize the flooding, pump out the minor flood damage and reduce the system damage is the best course of action. The bigger the port, the more damage can be repaired in a turn, but you risk the ship/sub by trying to go too far. IMO patience is the best plan- get into the nearest port and reduce what you can. Only move when flood is as low as possible and system damage is below 25 - preferably below 10.

Thanks for the info, BB!

So Dutch Harbor is 3/3 Port, 10 hexes away and Cold Bay is 1/1 14 hexes away...

Two problems: Adak might very well fall to the enemy; if so rescuing my stranded sub may prove untenable. Cold Bay at least he just might be safe until the ARD comes along, in about 12 months. If CB can handle an ARD, that is.

The second problem is my difficulty in forming a TF with a ship that has repaired to, say, 10 SYS and 15 FLT; how do you "force" them out of their repair berth after days and weeks of the Operational Report saying nothing more can be done at DH/CB/wherever, and they do not appear on the TF component selection page?

Combat Report

for

December 29, 1942

Naturally, as usual, El Lobo launched several airstrikes in Burma and in China.

However, in Burma, he concentrated all of his aircraft to strike the Burma Corps one hex Northwest of Toungoo. I suspect that he is concerned about the Allies cutting off his Northern troops from his Southern troops as the Burma Corps is threatening to capture Toungoo. He has also moved some ground forces from Northern bases to strengthen Magwe and Toungoo.

The Japanese took a brutal beating at Chungking suffering over 34,000 casualties with hundreds of squads being destroyed.

If the sub has been stood down for repairs, you put it back in "Readiness" mode and it will appear in the "Ships in Port" screen, but will be greyed out - which indicates it will take up to 3 days to get it ready to sail again. Once it is no longer greyed out, you should be able to put it in a Sub Transport TF (see Alfred's recent post on the main forum or War Room or Tech Support where someone was asking about damaged subs disbanding themselves again). Set the TF to Cruise Speed only.

But why are you in a hurry to get to Cold Bay? Is Dutch Harbour also under attack?

BB—thank you for this insight. Methods seem to be always available, but they are sometimes difficult to understand right off. I appreciate your help, mate!

Interesting that you mention Cruise Speed. Most of my subs automatically go to Mission Speed, and to be honest, I can't detect any difference in endurance costs. Why cruise over mission?

The answer to your question regarding Dutch Harbor is a weighted one. If El Lobo wants Adak—and apparently he does—he's going to get it. And when he gets it he's going to put planes on it and bomb nearby bases. So I figure a disabled sub in air range might be toast.

However, Grayling only moved 3 hexes last turn. It will take 3-4 turns to even reach DH, much more to arrive in Cold Bay. So DH is looking like the only choice, although we had a very slight improvement in FLT, from 60 to 59.

But the truth is that the calm, sane tone of your questions made me reconsider DH even before I knew the latest situation. I tend to lose it sometimes and panic, and you talked me & Grayling off the ledge, so to speak

Thank you again, BB! Cheers!

Hag

1. Press the "Unit OOB" button, and find the other bits of 4 Sqn. You may need to recombine them.

2. Send it to Auckland (national base), that might work. (Edit - if you can buy off the static restricted status).

Some people say put it on a damaged AK you don't need and set sail for Tokyo, but I have heard that if it gets in the reinforcement queue for air units sunk as cargo, it will continue to cost PP ... however, I once lost one of those provisional P40 Sqns sunk en route to Java, bought it back from the dead pile, and it came back without any withdrawal date at all.

Ian R-

Thank you for responding.

I bought the unit out to I Australian Corps, will transport the unit to Sydney, and hope once iut is unloaded I can withdraw the beast!

Best Regards,

-Terry
