PP—

Rio will be not communicating for a few days, we'll see.

I know he'd want to thank you for your outstanding offer in a timely fashion—very much appreciated!

Thanks, mate!

Update: Rio's trip in Canada has been extended until sometime next week.

El Lobo is traveling in the area, so my current plan is to get him to the house and serve him fine pinots and get him to spill all the big plans of Japan warmongering... or else just move on to the fine cabs and discuss portentous events of these days...

Oh, and I must remind him to send me the turn before Rio's return. My ASW nailed IJN S-123 off Perth and I'm dying to finish him off...

We'll be up & running before long...

Good luck. Take some time and catch the Jays and try to do a few fun things!

If at some point you want someone to pinch-hit for you on here just ask.

The Canadians in Burlington and Hamilton were going nuts over the Bluejays!

Combat Report

for

January 26, 1943

Commander Haggard hammered another Japanese submarine today.

El Lobo has moved more Japanese Infantry and Tank Divisions into Burma. He has also sent another Japanese Infantry Division in China to the hex one hex West of Paoshan.

It is readily apparent that El Lobo intends to make a stand in Burma. All Allied unrestricted aircraft in India are consolidating at Calcutta. Some are damaged and need repair. Upon completion of repairs, fighters and bombers will fly further south to the built-up bases along the southern Burma-India border and fighters will fly into India to the few airbases built in Burma. The Allies will then commence a massive bombing campaign in Burma.

Burma and China are the hot spot battlegrounds.

The Buds

Come and Gone

El Lobo arrived at my home in Grass Valley on October 20, 2016. Commander Haggard arrived two days later.

We got hammered one night and were up until dawn gabbing about WITP and other worldly matters. We think we have everything figured out to save the world, but are too lazy to implement our ideas.

We had a great time, as usual, and I was sad to see them pull-out on October 23 for other Theaters of Operation. El Lobo is traveling to Burbank to visit a friend and Capt. Haggard returned to home to his wife in Sanoma.

El Lobo returns to his home in Thailand on October 31, 2016.

Best Regards,

-Terry

It's taken me a few days to recover from the bash. Slept 11 hours first night home. Yeah, the years bring rank, but I'd take 30-days in the brig to have that old "bounce-back" after partying with Rio.

Rio makes the best tacos ever. It's 7 AM, halfway through my first cup of java, and already I'm thinking "yum... tacos..."

Great time! Thanks, Rio!

El Lobo? He's as inscrutable as ever.

Sure. We want secrets. We use all the ammo at our disposal. Wine failed us. Tequila failed us. The other opening salvos of our arsenal failed us. He seemed to enjoy the Japanese war movies I brought along for entertainment, but I didn't hear any ill-advised confidentialities come out of it.

We turned up the heat. One o'clock in the morning. Two o'clock, three. "C'mon, El, drink that IPA, it's still early! You want scotch? Fine, we got that. Now then. How many divisions are available for Burma? Are you booking out of Ceylon or what? Where is the infernal KB?"

Nothing. El be one tough customer.

Well, there's always next year...

Combat Report

for

January 27, 1943

There were very few casualties today for either the Japanese or the Allies.

Intelligence indicates that El Lobo continues to load Japanese Infantry on transports bound for Rangoon. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the Allies are not going to be able to drive the Japanese out of Burma anytime soon. Accordingly, it is most likely that the Allies will not be able to reach Chengtu and Chungking prior to the Japanese capture of those two cities.

The good news is that El Lobo has not been able to withdraw Japanese ground forces in China to cause trouble elsewhere. Additionally, the Allies in Burma are tying-up numerous Japanese ground forces in Burma.

A January 27, 1943 Strategic Map is below.

QUESTIONS

FOR

THE WAR COLLEGE

Gentlemen of The War College-

I would appreciate your advice pertaining to the following questions:

Repairing Damaged Aircraft

What are the top four ground units to have at an air base to repair damaged aircraft (please prioritize list as best to less best)?

Command for U.S. Carrier Capable Aircraft

I have several squadrons of carrier capable aircraft that I want to expend Political Points to change the presently restricted command to an unrestricted command.

Does it matter as to which unrestricted command I select?

If so, which unrestricted command would you suggest I select?

Training for Carrier Capable Aircraft that Are Not Trained

I have several squadrons of Wildcats that are carrier capable, but not trained.

Is the most efficient and quickest way to train these aircraft is to fly them onto carriers, order the carriers to sea, and commence training the Wildcats?

If not, what is the most efficient and quickest way to train these carrier capable Wildcats?

Ship Upgrades

I am attempting to determine approximately how long it takes any given ship to complete an upgrade(s) so that I know approximately when they would be available for use once the upgrade(s) are completed.

Do I look at the "Minimum Upgrade Delay" number?

If so, for those ships having more than one upgrade, do I add up all the "Minimum Upgrade Delay" numbers?

Looking forward to advice regarding the above questions.

Best Regards,

-Terry

QUESTIONS

FOR

THE WAR COLLEGE

Gentlemen of The War College-

I would appreciate your advice pertaining to the following questions:

Repairing Damaged Aircraft

What are the top four ground units to have at an air base to repair damaged aircraft (please prioritize list as best to less best)?

Don't know what you are thinking of. Only Air Support squads repair aircraft so just get the unit with the most AS squads.

Command for U.S. Carrier Capable Aircraft

I have several squadrons of carrier capable aircraft that I want to expend Political Points to change the presently restricted command to an unrestricted command.

Does it matter as to which unrestricted command I select? If it is being used within the Command Radius of the Air HQ it might get some benefits in upgrading.

If so, which unrestricted command would you suggest I select? The one in the area you are planning to use the air unit.

They need to spend 3 months on an aircraft carrier. What you do with them in that 3 months does not matter.
Ship Upgrades

I am attempting to determine approximately how long it takes any given ship to complete an upgrade(s) so that I know approximately when they would be available for use once the upgrade(s) are completed.

Do I look at the "Minimum Upgrade Delay" number? Yes, but if they have some major damage that may extend the time in repair. Most often minor damage and a point or two of major damage is removed during the upgrade time.

If so, for those ships having more than one upgrade, do I add up all the "Minimum Upgrade Delay" numbers? Sometimes the same device is changed in both upgrades, so the AI only installs the latest one and saves some of the upgrade time. Radars for example. Keep in mind that repair times are always estimates! Things like arrival of other ships using the same port or shipyard repair points can change timing.
Looking forward to advice regarding the above questions.

Best Regards,

-Terry

BBfanboy-

Thank you for responding promptly and for the advice.

Now, I have to get the Wildcats off land onto Carriers.

Coordinating ship upgrades with Operation Sea Shark so that all ships can sail June 1, 1943 is going to be time consuming.

Best Regards,

-Terry

BB covers it all. The only thing I would add is that maximize a/c repair don't use an over stacked or damaged airfield. Additionally, I have never detected a ton of operational losses for using untrained carrier capable planes. In other words "go for it". I had read a detailed thread on this topic (maybe CR??). Of course I couldn't find it now.

pontiouspilot-

Interesting.

I figure it can't hurt, so I am in the process of buying-out all the Wildcats and Dauntless Bombers to transfer them to carriers. Once all the newbies are on the carriers, the carriers will set sail (on safe waters)for the months of February, March, and April for training purposes for the newly bought-out fighters and bombers.

I always appreciate your comments "He whom has a Hockey Fetish." *grins

By virtue of their lengthy training on land the Marine Wildcats and DBs/TBs probably have pretty good stats on the combat skills applicable to their aircraft. Being "Carrier Trained" does not seem to add anything particularly noticeable to their effectiveness (perhaps better strike coordination?), but getting them overall "Experience" does. So you do not need to cruise the seas exposing your CVs to sub attack just to pass the time - you can use the squadrons if their skills are high 60s or better and their Experience is over about 55. I would also want Defensive skill to be over 60.

The fighter groups can increase experience by flying CAP. The DBs and TBs can fly Nav Search, ASW, do some surprise bombing of isolated enemy garrisons or even just cross-train in those missions.

And while your new Marine squadrons are gaining experience and getting time on deck, your Navy squadrons can hone their skills and push their experience to elite levels.

I don't know what your balance of forces is vis-à-vis KB, but you might even be in a position to take it on with the help of your extra squadrons. Your call.

BBfanboy-

That is good news that the carriers don't necessarily have to set sail to train the untrained carrier pilots. However, I may still set sail from Los Angels to Port Stanley to give the ship crews some more experience. The carriers have been at sea quite a bit during the last year.

Presently, carrier aircraft available are as follows:

683 Total Fighters
661 Wildcats
16 Sea Hurricane 2b
6 Corsairs
413 Trained
270 Not Trained

450 Total SBD-3 Dauntless
270 Trained
180 Not Trained

235 Total TBF-1 Avenger
181 Trained
54 Not Trained

The sklls and experience levels range from 49 to 71. The vast majority are in the high 50s to low 60s.

I have 6 CVs and 8 CVEs, and 1 CVL.

The Allies plan to invade the four Southern Marianas Islands on or about June 15, 1943. Two more CVs and four more CVEs will arrive by June 1st.

Best Regards,

-Terry

Question

for

The War College

Zones of Control Effects on Movement (8.3.1.2 of the Manual)

Example, the Allies solely held Hex 60, 44 (the hex Northeast of Shwebo).

The Japanese solely held Shwebo.

The Allies moved from Hex 60, 44 into Shwebo. The Allies and Japanese now share Shwebo.

It is my understanding that the Japanese may not now move from Shwebo into Hex 60, 44. Is this correct?

Best Regards,

-Terry

Yes. Use the "W" key to see "Who" hold each hex side. Move your cursor off and select a hex that is not the ones you are interested in so the white of the selected hex border does not interfere.

BBfanboy-

Thank you for confirming my thoughts on the matter.

Also, that "W" key is a neat trick.

Best Regards,

-Terry
