Hi, i have a little question with skirmishers... they work like in some wargames where they are deployed as a screen for the mother unit OR like in other wargames they are a new unit that is independent from mother unit???

I ask this because first option made easier the game limiting the micromanegement AND preventing unhistorical uses for them BUT second option cover some things like use skirmishers as garrison troops or to cover arty or as support for cavalry.

Thanks.

The second one. You can select the size of the company you want to detach, then they become a separate unit in skirmish formation. They can be used as garrison troops also, cover arty, etc.

Thanks for the reply.

Interesting, you can select the side of the skirmishers unit... there is a limit to this number because in a battalion only 1 comapny was light (well there were the grenadiers company, diferent names in the diferent battalion types) and related with this... not all units had effective skirmish companies this made that for example prusians had independent skirmishers companies that they add to their brigades... is this represented with units that cant deploy skirmishers or can deploy more skirmisher units... i think in light battalions(and is posible if you create an OOB define an infantry battalion as unable to deploy skirmishers???).

I see the video but i dont notice any way to help identify the mother unit of a skirmisher unit is this present???

Thanks.

Only one company was a skirmisher company but you could detach as many companies as you want - they just might not skirmish. You are the general - it is up to you. You can break a regiment up into groups of companies - garrison four different buildings with from one regiment.

The Unit description says whether it is a split unit or not. The video did not use any of the IA skirmishers, so you could not see it

Thanks for the reply.

Ok, then apart deploy skirmishers you can detach in companies... i dont know if i like this a lot... for light battalions is correct but regular infantry detached in companies... even the use of half battalions in some engines is complicated.

I have experience with Tiller nap games and the skirmishers allways was a problem in how use them without exploits, divide in companies regular infantry... i dont know if is good at all.

Interested in test this in first person.

PD: you never explore the idea of show the command chain using bars??? something like the CM system, you select the mother unit and you see links to sub-units (select a brigade commander and see lines to the battalions that commands, select a battalion and see lines with sub-units etc etc).

You are very welcome.

Company is probably a bad choice of words on my part - suffice to say you can split portions of your troops off as required. The Skirmishers work very well - they AI uses them very well too, you will see them spawn and drive off your artyillery if you get too close. They return to the main body if threatened by cavalry. You can see what you think.

No bars linking chain of command, it would be hard in 3D, they would go through hills, buildings, etc. If you select an officer and open the map all of his units are highlighted. You also see icons over troops belonging to you. You also have a tree structure in the OOB window that lists all of your troops and has a 'go to unit' option.

I see, thanks for the reply.

Maybe something i see problematic in wargames is show in a visual way (over the map to see it fast) the OOB using colours or similar things... maybe the problem in have it only in the 2D map is that force you leave action, use 2D and try remember it when move to 3D.

Any way is like all new game, forgive bad habits and learn new bad habits
