Is this game basically a updated People's/Panzer General type of game? It sort of looks like it from the screen shots, etc.

Used to play the heck out of those games back in the day.

It is similar to PzC, but much improved IMO.
Supply, air/naval stuff, unit purchases have quite novel mechanics.
If you liked PzC, I see no reason that you would not love OOB.
Also, I don't think there are any other games in this category that covers the Pacific.

Jump to the Slitherine forum. You'll find much more discussions about the game there.

Thanks for the fast response Erik. I will have to do some more checking on the site there and here as well.

The game I was thinking of was part of SSI"s command series (I think). Pacific General was the specific game I was thinking of. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_General

I never played Pacific General, but really enjoyed Panzer General, Fantasy General and People's General back in the day and was wondering if this game had its roots in those games.

has a similar feel to those, and still own them all, Fantasy General never been re made or bettered imo with People's General being the most modern, best option is too look at the video, see a few AAR and twitch feeds then take a leap of faith as you won't be disappointed, either way good luck and enjoy the view

Yes, basically, but with vastly improved naval and air operations.

Subs, however, are surprisingly weak. A sub can attack a destroyer, do maybe 1 point of damage, then it's payback time in a big way.
