Attached is the latest release in the Northern Fury Battleset, it is out of order from some of the other releases as I needed to go back and rebuild it – Lua features very heavily in this scenario and made the whole thing possible. The scenario is completely different from anything I’ve built or seen so far and may not be to everyone’s liking for that reason. Its primary purpose in the Battleset is to tell a story and give the player a deeper perspective into the war.

Northern Fury 3 – ‘Dagger to the Heart’ starts in the opening minutes of the war and places the player in control of the operations center at US Coast Guard Station ‘Sandy Hook’ New Jersey. It’s a quiet Sunday morning – but not for long.

Alternatively you can play as the Soviet and have a bit of fun. Not overly challenging from this side but it gives a different perspective.

The Scenario has many events; hence, there may well be problems. Due to a bit of randomness, it is difficult to test all events so please let me know if something is broken.

As always, I look forward to your comments, critiques and suggestions.
Thanks for playing and enjoy.

Edit: Update 2.4 Aug 5 2015
-fixed ammo issue on bases
-fixed repeated event firing

Edit: Update 2.5 Aug 14 2015
changes:
-Cleared up some of the messages (please note any mix ups)
-Dallas will deploy a RHIB when she halts the AGI
-HC-2 Helo's are now in Ferry mode and there is an alternate base to deploy them to
-Time for challenging suspicious AC is now only 5 seconds and the area is expanded (may cause some unintended triggers)
-The area for conducting rescue ops around sinking ships is larger but this may also cause some unintended triggers
-Montauk rescue triggers fixed
-QE2's Life boats fixed
-Dallas has an extra CIWS - not you need to watch the weapon arcs
-Republic 23 should be fixed
-Events set up should the Mahan sink

Good scenario. Very overwhelming as the US side, but that's to be expected. I did notice a "too close to suspicious aircraft" constantly firing-don't know if it's out of sight or a programming issue, and have attached a save.

Thanks

I might have to tighten up the fixed RPs around them - but getting an F-16 to slow down enough to trigger the event if their too tight is another issue. Another solution is to make a non-repeatable event for each of them instead of a generic repeatable one. Thanks, I'll fix that one.

I encountered a slight issue being that there was no ammunition in either of the bases for the Fighting Falcons so they became empty and left like that (as I encountered twenty-five minutes or so in)

Thanks, will fix. You won't have to do too much more shooting but can work around in the editor. Sorry bout that.

A quick one:

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!!!!

I noticed a couple of civilian aircraft (Cessna 172 and PA-28 Cherokee) with surface search radars. Is this intended (Soviet airborne spies )?

More spoiler alerts

I noticed a difference in VP on different vessels' sinking, i.e., Grikos, Happy Mariner and Alabama Bell render -50 VP each, while Atlantic Hermes gives -5 VP.

Also, some Shipwreck sank Happy Mariner's life boat and rescue beacon. I find this to be a bit unrealistic, although I do not know how it could be avoided in game . This sinking did not give any VP penalty, though.

And I'm yet to cross the 10-minutes-into-scenario line very very interesting so far

One question, though: can the helos not marked or readied as SAR be used for Search efforts (i.e., will the scenario give VP for flying a non-SAR helo in the vicinity of the life boats?).

I won't spoil your surprise but those well-equipped Cessna’s are ...curious...

Different points for different sized vessels are as designed - gives you something to think about when prioritizing your defences - since you don't have much. When the Shipwreck hit the life boat you should have got a message, I couldn't figure out a way of stopping it but guess it's just bad luck (no points)

Yes those Helo's - as long as they are SAR will trigger points even if they are in Mar Patrol mode and the Hurcs will do the same

Enjoy, it gets even more interesting shortly

The damage is already done even if they go down in flames

Would advise caution, there are a lot of aircraft out there.

There are several events later on which lead you to the conclusions you have come to. To trigger some of them you should 'challange' the aircraft by flying very close to them where your pilot might notice strange activity - then

Well, I'm 15 minutes in and I've already lost both cutters and the QM2 . I definitely chose poorly on which missiles to send my fighters after. The Mahan did well with the missiles that passed through its engagement envelope.

Really enjoying it Gunner. You have a gift with scenario making!

Not bad. In my game Mahan only wasted missiles with no kills the ADF F-16 did somehow better, downing two of them. Oh, well...

I've tried to fly close to the suspicious Cessnas, but looks like my fighter pilots are quite naïve as they haven't detected anything strange

I need some clarification, though: first messages say that we should fly our Hercs and Choppers over the life boats, however next messages mention Rescue buoy. Thing is that life boats move, therefore hovering over them for 10 minutes is not possible, and matching their speed & course is a micromanaging nightmare which in real life would be a task for our helo pilots, not us . Also, does the Herc have to be at a certain altitude? I'm trying with both the Rescue Beacon and QE2 life rafts and amn't getting any VPs

Congrats for the scenario, I'm finding it very interesting. It plays almost as a role-playing game, which I love

Ok, so I more or less managed to get the Hercs launching supplies, etc.

Two issues:

· Republic #23 (Cessna 172) takes a 45º course and keeps going until almost Newfoundland, where it runs out of fuel (I guess) and crashes. I receive -100 VP penalty for shooting down a civilian aircraft.

· QE2 life rafts have reached the coast but not quite Montauk Rescue Ctr, therefore we are not getting VPs.

PS: I think there is mistake on the Special Message relating to Atlantic Companion LB reaching Jones Beach. Message says "Valley Road" vessel.

Galahad (and Gunner), how do you get the Hercs to drop supplies? I've been flying them over buoys and life rafts at min altitude with no effect.

Sorry, one more issue. I noticed that when the message for Rescue 3 being ready is fired, the actual Rescue 3 Herc still has two hours to prep.

OOK, here are some quick answers
-you should be aiming at the Rescue bacons not the boats. I need to delete that one bit in an early message
-Republic 23! Grrr, I was trying something different with that one and noted the cross country adventure which I thought was now fixed - I think I'll just delete it
-The Hurcs drop supplies by entering a set of RPs which are hidden to the player but it is about 500M Squair so fairly small. It may take a run or two, altitude does not matter, the RPs are fixed to the ship, the Rescue beacon is teleported to within it and the RPs work for all the other triggers as well.
-Rescue 3 is probably another Rescue RHIP that pops up at Sandy Point USCG Stn
-Only the 'suspicious' side private aircraft have a zone around them. Your Ftrs need to be in Loiter and stay within that small zone for about 10 seconds
- thanks for picking up the error - there are a lot of msgs so am not surprised I got some things mixed up

Did the Mahan sink - I think I forgot to put events in for her.

Appreciate the help on this one guys

Got it! My bad about Rescue 3. Haven't gotten more than 45 minutes in yet so I don't know what terrible fate awaits the Mahan...

Also, not sure if this is working as designed, but after I stopped and boarded the intel ship it launched an SA-N-5 that downed the Dallas' helo. I should have had it keep its distance, but I had figured that we were safe once the ship was boarded.

If the Mahan survived the first 10 min it will likely survive the scenario unless it gets unlucky.

The boarding (trying to remember) happens in about 3 stages, the final stage where you have been on board for (I think) 10 min or so - the ship will teleport away (and you get other tasks). Until that time you're guys don't have complete control of it and as you found - it still has teeth

I couldn't confirm this because as Dallas was proceeding to board her, was sunk by some Shipwrecks

Tonight my overall impression on the scenario

For me the drama on the Intel ship did play out to the bloody end, even though my Dallas was also a sinking wreck before the end.

Gunner, you should try pitching this scenario to the Coast Guard as a training tool. It really makes you think about how to manage your meager rescue resources.

My overall impressions:

1) First of all, this one is perhaps the most original scenario I've yet played in Command, and certainly a very interesting one. As I said earlier, the continuos stream of messages help building the "being there" sensation, and it plays almost like a RPG. Brace yourself for the first ten minutes!

2) Improvements:

· I think some of the messages / events need some polishing. Two examples: one, as I mentioned earlier with the "hover over life boats / rescue buoy" confusion, easily manageable; second, during Dallas / Soviet Survey vessel standoff, just upon stopping it* I received a message stating Dallas was sending a boarding party. I assumed a RHIB would appear and then totally forgot about it as my atention was elsewhere. Thing is that there wasn't a RHIB and Dallas and the Soviet vessel spent several minutes a few miles apart doing nothing, until Dallas was sunk by Shipwrecks.

Following with the Dallas drama, I sent several RHIBs and the Adak to pick survivors up but no event was triggered

Also, special messages advise that bringing survivors to Rescue Ctr/beaches and hospitals will render VPs. Well, I tried hovering a helo over one of the beaches to no avail, but same helo did receive VPs a few minutes later in a hospital. I'd separate this on the messages: RHIBs & ferries get VPs upon reaching beaches, helos can go directly to hospitals.

*: don't remember exactly if Soviet vessel was already stopped or Dallas was already really close and this proximity triggered the event.

· Placing a hovering helicopter or flying by a Herc so close to rescue beacons is a PITA of micromanagement if, as mentioned earlier, I'm feeling myself as the guy in charge of overall rescue ops, it is not my task to tell this HH-65 pilot where and when to decelerate and descend from cruising profile to hover. I think that with bigger "trigger areas" the scenario would be more easily manageable. However, this is not a crucial point as, in the end, you find a way to get the task done

· Republic 23 is already discused . If you want to add something else to the "air picture", I'd propose this: have another radar equipped Cessna in the air (following a sailboat race or whatever legit reason one can find to equip a Cessna with a surface search radar ). This way you force the player to challenge all the suspicious contacts. I confese that I tried that but, as my fighter jockeys were unable to get any response from the Cessnas, just shot down all the radar equipped light aircrafts. With my suggestion, you keep all the trigger-happy players (such as myself ) from shooting down innocent flyers.

· I do not know if initial positions are randomized, but my helos from NAS Oceana didn't have the range to help anyone

· The RMS QE2 life boat flotilla did not quite reached the rescue center beach and kept going forward and backward. No VPs, of course.

Of course, I do not know if implementing these changes is easy, so feel free to discard them if the effort is not worthwile

PS: I've once visited one of the tankers in the scenario, very nice touch! Luckyly she wasn't hit

Excellent! Thank you for the comments Galahad. Most are easy fixes I think.

The Dallas Drama! Tricky one to manage, and she gets blasted every time. In the early iterations of the DB it used to survive because her Phalanx managed to knock down the Shipwrecks - very close and nail biting but it survived. Very tempted to put some more defences on her just for good measure, but then again maybe not.

I was thinking that the Helos from Oceana would be used on the Southern ships, but I tried a Knox class and it got wasted, then an OHP and it died as well - the Mahan was third time lucky and at least it survives and in some cases takes out passing missiles. So with the Sourthern ships surviving, perhaps the 'Fleet Angles' could transfer up to Gabraski - I'll check the timings.

Republic 23 is a PITA. The idea is as you describe, to keep the players honest, but I'll need to fix it or scrap it. I will put a radar on her if it stays though.

I try to get real names for all the ships, not always possible especially finding ships which were afloat in 94, glad it hit a cord - anyone got any good hints on Names for Portuguese fishing boats

Appreciate the points and most should be fixed up in the next release.

OK

New version 2.5 both here and in original post:

Thanks for the points above and as always looking for any points to improve it

SPOILERS!

A really stunning scenario, I am just 15 minutes in and have some small findings.

There is a Piper 28 and and a C172 (with A-G radar active) way out over the sea, and a C172 (Cape Cod 10) even further out all at very high altitudes (400ft above max for the airframe). I have not gotten to investigate those yet since the scenario have kept me busy ;) They however do a very good job of looking suspicious.

Some minor things to make this excellent scenario even more perfect:
Spelling error in briefing "clime" should be "climb".
Spelling error in the first message:
"Get the Tahoma and Dalas to fire up there Helos and take a look around!" (Dallas and their)
