Anyone have guesstimate of 460mm main gun Type 0 HE ammo blast radius.

Just asking because unfortunate AI controlled PG Sacramento stumbled into my Yamato group and got blasted at 1.000 yards with several direct hits.

I went to my best source for WW II guns and found a lot of stuff, just not what you were looking for.

Some may find this interesting (and a lot more have probably been to the page)

www.navweaps.com has a LOT of good stuff.

My guess is that since the 46 cm is approximately the same size as an 18 inch gun (18.1 inch); at 1,000 yards the projectile is going to go completely through the Sacramento and explode somewhere on the other side, if the ship is firing an AP projectile.

For comparison:
A 16” AP projectile can penetrate 30 feet of solid concrete.
The projectile travels three times the speed of sound.

As for blast radius of a 16” HC:
“The High Capacity (HC) shell can create a crater 50 feet wide and 20 feet deep (15 x 6 m). During her deployment off Vietnam, USS New Jersey (BB-62) occasionally fired a single HC round into the jungle and so created a helicopter landing zone 200 yards (180 m) in diameter and defoliated trees for 300 yards (270 m) beyond that.”

If you are interested in the gun operation here is a training video:

This is a picture I took on the USS North Carolina last visit:

Are you sure the Sacramento was hit by the 18.1 inch guns? Normally the secondary armament, I believe in this case 6 inch guns, would be deployed for this target as the 18.1 inch gun ammo is very limited.

Could it actually be fired at such a small target (any target) at a 1000yds?

Yamato battlegroup fueling in a remote port... PG Sacramento stumbles in during the night...

"MURICAN BATTLESHIP FIRE FIRE"...

46cm shell hits PG Sacramento. At least 3 hits with 460mm.

*MASSIVE EXPLOSIVE DAMAGE*

PG Sacramento sinks.

*snif*

Not respecting RL, in game I rarely see secondary guns used on BB's. Main guns are used almost exclusively, particularly for bombardments. I've tested various ranges with consistent effect. Prolly just my luck, but that's what I have seen.

So, OP's results are very much what I would expect to see ... main guns used at any distance.

This thread is a timely reminder of the loss to the forum of not having either Don Bowen or Symon participating anymore as they could quickly provide an accurate answer.

My view is that the issue of blast radius is not taken into account by the code in determining which weapons fire.  Just as radar is not taken into account for the opening salvos as no weapon commences firing before the Mark I eyeball gets a fix, it is just part of the abstraction.  The damage potential and range of a weapon is however taken into account by the reasonably sophisticated ballistics model.

I'd check this site. It rates the blast effect as 26 / +5. The Gorn gets most of his information from here.

Unexpected find while searching on this topic:

A photographed explosion of the AA ammunition (San-shiki dan) of the 46cm gun.

I'm just the opposite. Main guns rarely register a hit, but the secondaries get about 15 hits per every single primary hit.

Of course I've also noticed that there tend to be 'bands' where the guns hit more often. For the smaller guns, that range is point blank 1000-2000 yds and between 6000-9000 yds. For the big guns, it tends to run between 2000-4000 yds and 8000-12000 yards.

With two of us getting different results, I'd have to assume its a matter of the RNG and how it operates on different systems.

My Yamato once sunk a PT boat with 46cm ammo. The round probably cost more than the boat. And, just the kinetic energy of the AP round hitting the plywood boat would be enough to make splinters of it. Had to pull up a very large AKE to Truk to re-arm... Stupid PT boats.

Nice images CB!

I need new dice ... where are those 20D anyway?

I see secondaries firing all the time. Even the sponson mounted units on Japanese BB's. Of course during bombardments range could affect this, and I typically set mine at ~60% of the range of the shortest range weapon that I wish to fire. IOW if I want the 12.7cm's to fire range is set to 12k.
