Hey Guys, I have been attempting to play this simulator for the past year and a half, and I find that I am spending more time researching the different vessels and the action that took place in the different theatres. It is an amazing game and yet I haven't even really started yet. I am going to start a Grand Campaign against the AI shortly.

My questions may be very simple, but I can't find the answers in the manual (read it twice now)

1) When you mouse over a base, the base screen summary comes up... At the bottom of this screen is a "Range is XX", what does this range represent?

2) I have seen on some of the infantry units the designation PA, does this represent Parachute? I know this one may seem stupid but I am trying to figure out who the paratrooper groups are.

That's all I have for now.

This is the distance in hexes from whatever hex is selected. So, select a hex, then mouse-over another hex (must be one that is not empty: can have units, ships, or a base) and the mouse-over shows you the distance between the two hexes. This was play-requested and is super useful. It saves loads and loads of people counting hexes on screen or using a spreadsheet with a formula to calculate the distance based on hex numbers.

2) I have seen on some of the infantry units the designation PA, does this represent Parachute? I know this one may seem stupid but I am trying to figure out who the paratrooper groups are.
I think you are seeing PA for Philippine Army, like USA = US Army, USMC = US Marine Corps, etc. As far as parachute capable units, depending on the context you will see something like "-parachute" or "p" (as in INFp).

Can paras land at enemy bases with troops ? They will shock attack then I guess? If base is empty just land them and attack next turn, right ?

Paras can be airdropped at enemy occupied bases as well as "empty" bases. They will shock attack in either case. If the base is undefended, they will obviously win and take over the base. However, para units do not have a lot of assault capability or firepower. Against even a lightly defended base they generally do not fare well, and face counterattack on subsequent turns.

If attacking a defended base with para units, make sure to transport as many troops as you can in one turn, and be prepared to relieve them with ground-based forces as quickly as possible.

Sounds logical. I will try this with Ternate which seems to have only a small base force. Lets see what happens. At least manpower the Jap can spare

Thanks for the answers witpqs, that was very helpful... Especially how to measure the number of hexes between two points.

Another question... When you have a base or troops that have a support of 50, but the support requested is 75, what do you do to increase your support to match the requested? Same goes for Aviation Support.

Just ran into another question, and it wasn't in the manual... (I am feeling all my questions must be add-ons to this game since the Manual that I know is kind of outdated but doesn't answer my specific questions) In the Base Screen, beside Supply, Fuel, Oil and Resources is an option to say "Yes" or "No", why are there options? And what do you do with these flags?

Heppy,

To increase support you need to move in units with the appropriate support squads attached. So, for example, to increase the aviation support find aviation base forces or sometimes the units will be referred to as "wings." If a unit has 90 avaiation support squads then it will increase your aviation support in the base by that number of squads. Most units have regular support squads but if you want lots of extra general support squads you usually find these in HQ units.

Thanks John B. What about with Infantry? I just had a regiment that had 120 support but is requiring 170. Do I move in another unit into their hex?

The Yes and No options reference whether those items are being stockpiled, i.e., the base will not share them with another base. You need to look at columns on the screen as well as rows. If stockpiling is Yes, then no supply will flow from that base to others, no matter how much of the item is at the base.

Yes, preferably an HQ unit, which has lots of support.

Don't go crazy trying to get adequate support to all locations.

Independent battalions and regiments need a higher HQ to provide support as they were not meant to operate on their own for extended periods.

That being said you will end up with lots and lots of combat units scattered all over without "perfect" full support.

Not a big deal. When you need to recover from fatigue, disruption and disablement support is worth its weight in gold, but much of the time, many of your units will be operating without full support.

This is particularly true if you manage to capture the base but are hanging on by your fingernails. If you've prepared light infantry that, while not air droppable, have no heavy equipment and can be flown in to the captured airfield.

I don't have a complaint here really, just something to consider. I avoid using the term you used as many regard it as derogatory, so I spell it out. I think maybe we have one Japanese individual who plays and posts once in a long while, but I wish we had a lot.
