After trying out some interception and ambush tactics against enemy aircraft under long-range-radar-coverage with on-board-radars disabled I encountered the following situation:

The altitude of the enemy was unknown because I had only 2D-radar-coverage. I was reluctant to switch on the radars of the low-flying interceptors because this would give away their position and ruin the surprise. I was still able to get a solid firing solution even with the height of the enemy unknown.

EDIT:

Because the altitude of the enemy was unknown, I could override the new snap-up/down-mechanic and get off some Sidewinders while flying at minimum altitude. After my interceptors got close, they got the altitude of the enemy set with their MK1 or IRST. It turned out the enemy was at 36000 ft which disabled the firing logic.
