04. Mar/Apr 1940. China. North Temperate.

Both the communist and Nationalist Chinese were trouble for the Japanese on this front this turn.

04. Mar/Apr 1940. Land Combat. communist Chinese Attack.

The Japanese player choose the assault table for this attack, which was (another) mistake by him this turn.

04. Mar/Apr 1940. Kaifeng, China.

The Japanese player in the deployment of his forces near Kaifeng, China made a third mistake this turn. His forces were such that the Nationalist Chinese were able to "liberate" the city of Kaifeng without a fight (i.e., through maneuver only). This put Umezu and his army out of supply.

The Japanese on their impulse was able to reestablish supply by moving a division, which was disorganized, to open supply. The Japanese then tired to retake Kaifeng on an attack slightly better than 50/50. They rolled a 2 and lost two ground units and saw the surviving two disorganized (but still in the supply).

The Nationalist 6th infantry army on allied next impulse was able to move and against put Umeza and his shirking army out of supply. The Nationalist seriously considered attacking an out of supply and disorganized Umeza but with odds at +2.333 they decided against it.

04. Mar/Apr 1940. Port Attack. Colombo, Ceylon.

Before moving on to Europe, I almost forgot to add the IJN port attack against the RN in Colombo, Ceylon which resulted in damaging the RN aircraft carrier Furious.

04. Mar/Apr 1940. RAF.

The RAF carried out one port attack and seven strategic bombing missions against the Germans this turn. The port attack only which wasn't a complete failure did little.

Of the seven RAF strategic bombing missions, only the first two did damage by reducing the Germany war economy by a total of 2 PP's.

04. Mar/Apr 1940. Finland.

The Soviets plan once the weather clears to demand the borderlands with Finland.

Asia.

Also, further east in Asia, the Soviets plan to "surprise" the Japanese by declaring war on them the first chance they, the Soviets, get.

04. Mar/Apr 1940. USA Entry Options.

The USA choose,

1. Chinese Build aircraft - no reaction.

7. Occupy Greenland / Iceland - the Germans react and the USA moves one chit from the Germany/Italian entry pool to the tension pool.

13. Embargo on strategic materials - Japan reacts. A chit is moved.

05. May/June 1940. Bay of Bengal.

The axis won the initiative, decided to move first and got fine weather across the globe. Knowing that the chance for fine weather in the next axis impulse was around 30%, the Japanese decided to play their offensive chit and take a super combine. The result was that the Japanese were able to invade Ceylon and challenge the RN for control of the west Pacific.

The IJN successfully cleared out of (i.e., defeated) the RN in Bay of Bengal this turn.

West Indian Ocean.

A mistake by the CW player in the RTB phase, which "returned" an RN curiser in the West Indian Ocean left control of that sea area totally in the hands of the Japanese.

Japan's aggression and focus on the CW comes at a price. The Soviets declare war on Japan and move strong forces under the command of Zhuiko into Manchuria.

05. May/June 1940. US Entry Pool After USSR DOW on Japan.

The USA to maintain the mask of neutrality makes a "minor" show of reaction to the USSR DOW on Japan. One chit is removed from the Germany/Italy entry pool.

05. May/June 1940. Coral Sea.

Though the RN took a beating at sea this turn, they're keeping the "back" door open in the Pacific for if (or when) the USA enters the door.

Italy entered the war on the first impulse of this turn causing problems for the RN in the Med and the French in North Africa. In fact, the Italian conquered Tunisia this turn.

A rough turn for the RN and their convoys. The CW lost 11 CPs this turn and saw another 6 forced to abort.

With the loss of 1 PP for food in flames because of no resource from Australia to Great Britain, the CW was able to overcome their CP losses this turn. However, 11 CPs lost (per turn) is not sustainable!

05. May/June 1940. Italy's Surprise Impulse. Port Attack on the French Fleet.

The Italians had a chance to destroy the French transport but only managed to damage it. No matter, the French aren't in position to reinforce North Africa next turn because the French player "failed" to repair the transport. A major mistake by the French player I think.

With no French units left in North Africa and no chance for the French to reinforce, Algeria and its resource should fall next.
