I recently (about 10 days ago) switched to Win 10. Previously, in MCS, the viewer would run in Win 7; it would open, I could select a unit and it would display the unit, the range, and the the compare tab was available. The unit fire and movement sounds never worked properly.

After upgrading to Win 10 (still in MCS), the viewer opened, but would not open the compare tab or the unit's range. After running the viewer from within Windows Explorer & applying compatibility settings, the entire program worked correctly, but the compatibility settings never saved and I was still unable to run the program correctly from within the game. I would have to continue to open from WE and apply compatibility settings every time I ran the viewer

Now that I'm playing ME, I'm having the same issues when I open the viewer from inside the game. The viewer opens, I can select a unit and the unit window opens. Nothing else works; no range, compare, or sounds. When I attempt to open the viewer from outside of the game and check compatibility, I get an error message that says "JTCS UnitViewer has stopped working". If I try to run the program from outside of the game, it opens, but the drop down box has selections for EF, WF and RS.

Just wondering if anyone else is having similar issues, or if there might be something else I could try.

EDIT: I saw the post below ( http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3936997 )and d'loaded the file from Arkady's link. F3 opens the viewer from within the game and it allows me to select a unit, i.e., it works as before. I still cannot access range & compare units... sounds don't work , but it's not an issue that I care much about.

Running the game directly from the application now works since I updated the settings per Arkady's reply. But, it works with limited function exactly like it does from within the game. Attempts to run it in compatibility mode still result in the message "JTCS UnitViewer has stopped working".

Hello Rake, sorry to hear about this!

Lesse, where should we start... Where did you install the game? Under C:\Matrix Games, or under C:\Program Files? The latter may make it particular choosy about access rights and credentials.

I have a Matrix Games folder on my hard drive... E:\Matrix Games\ with all my Matrix stuff in it. Learned a long time back not to put these games in my Program Files folder.

This isn't something that's a real pain, but I do like the way the unit viewer presents the range factors.

Thanks, Jason... Yes, I have changed the settings text and the viewer now opens the correct (ME) game. The persistent issue is that none of the additional functions (range, compare or sounds) work when I open the unit viewer. I've tried changing the compatibility settings, but to no avail.

I just tested my defaul and patched install.

It isn't using Arkady's latest one that he posted, it's just using the default one.

Here's a screenshot of the compare functioning as intended.

I'm not sure what it might be, but I'm sure it's on my end. Funny thing is, the JTCS UnitViewer in works just fine

Hmm, hopefully Arkady sees this, he might have an idea what is going on here.

Are those errors with the version that came with the game, or from the latest version from his site?

Honestly I don't remember, but it seems to be version #2.1.0.39792

OK, that's the one that came with the game (2.1.0). The one from his site is 2.1.1.

I don't know if that makes a difference but you might want to give it a try?

Well, I actually get the same blurred result on current computer :) It was better when I developed this feature two computers ago.
Stumbling over source code it seems that it should be related to DPI or ClearType setting of your (and mine) computer.

FWIW, I'm seeing the same thing. Win 10 with default resolution and ClearType on. Using the version of the viewer that came with the game.

I have the blurred text on my W10 64bit setup as well. Everything is on defaults.

I played around with Shortcut Properties and with the various settings in the Compatibility tab, any of them that I tried did not change things.

Not a big thing as such. If some of you guys finds a workaround I would be interested to use it too of course.

Jason,

Don't mean to butt into your conversation here, but had to thank you for this tip.
I did this change + added a desktop shortcut and it works fine outside the game.
I'm running Win7.

I'm still having problems with the UnitViewer, and was wondering if I'm the only one seeing this.

In both JTCS and CSME, the UnitViewer will not display any of the additional functions (Compare, Range Tables, Unit Base, etc.) when opened from within the game. I can (most of the time) get everything to work by opening the viewer from outside of the game, but only when opened in Administrator mode... and even this doesn't work all the time.

The bigger problem is that, when I open the viewer in Admin mode, the game screen gets all screwy... as i scroll the screen, the screen either "copies itself" (see the picture below) or goes completely white. The game runs perfectly well in the background, but there's no way to restore the view without saving and exiting out. Refresh view does nothing.

[image][/image]

The other minor, recurring annoyance, when opening UnitViewer from outside the game, is trying to find the unit I'm looking for... Inside the game, the selected unit displays, but I need to search for it from outside. This isn't much of an issue in the WW II games because I'm familiar with the majority of the units. For CSME, I use F2 0r F3 almost every time I select a unit.

I've tried setting up the game exe to open only in Admin mode to see if that would work. As mentioned in my OP, I usually run the game on a Win 10 machine, but I've had nearly identical issues with two other computers, one a laptop and the other a desktop... Anyone else seeing this issue?

I am seeing none of these issues. (Neither AFAIK are any other members of the Dev Team.) Not to say you are not; you obviously are seeing them. But:

  • If we can't see these issues ourselves, we can't debug them.
  • Often, issues like these are due to differences in video cards, and their drivers (which may be buggy).
  • The Unit Viewer is an add-on utility. We do not program it.

A suggestion: If you can afford it, a second monitor is great for playing the game in one monitor, while referencing the Manual, Unit Viewer, the Forum (in your web browser), etc. in the second monitor.

We provide the Unit Viewer as an add-on convenience for the players. We can't support it fully ourselves. Sorry if it doesn't work out well for you.
