The Allies force us out of Cherbourg. They'll have to contend with the SS dug in and defending the Cotentin peninsula. Meanwhile repairs go on to rail facilities to keep the supplies moving to Normandy.

Nice breakthrough but I recovered.

Although that leading armored division I had completely surrounded and cutoff (because I retreated the second stack in the line first) and he managed to rout all the way to the Cherbourg outskirts. He should have been driven into the sea since he was surrounded by mech and para units. One aggravating feature of this game :-)

Forgot to get pictures.

The Allies finally gain a little breathing room and the German army has to dance a bit to extricate some units from the Cotentin peninsula. But I managed to do that pretty well.

It's late August now, and the Allies are still fairly well contained. Their airpower has been a little more effective lately, but the Luftwaffe has done a decent job of keeping the area south of Normandy clear for moving up reinforcements.

This should get more interesting now that Scott has some room to bring in more reinforcements. Here's the latest situation in Normandy:

It's early September in Normandy. The Americans have mostly secured the Cotentin peninsula, but German units were able to fall back in reasonably good order. The front is more of a straight line across the base of the peninsula now, which makes my defense a little bit easier. The following pictures show the front lines, and also the interdiction levels (without units shown)

Into September and the Allies are slowly pushing south. Their gains are tough to come by.

Turn 17- Sept. 19, 1944

A quiet turn. Things have stalemated a bit in Normandy, and they've stayed stalemated in Italy. Germany did a lot of moving around and reorganizing corp HQ and subordinates to even out command loads. Other than that, the air forces flew. VP right now are at -379.

Picture of Normandy followed by interdiction levels.

Interdiction: (apologies for the screen resolution on the picture. I think it has something to do with taking a screen image of something running in parallels desktop and then uploading it from the mac side. I'll see if I can figure out a better way)

The Allies gain one more hex. We could mount a limited counterattack but the odds don't favor it. Best to conserve strength and not waste it, and build up the defense a little more to prevent more breakthroughs.

Situation in Normandy:

No change in the front lines despite a fair amount of shooting. Heavy casualties in some Allied attacks. Germany strengthens the lines in Normandy. Situation static in Italy except for some air actions.

Interdiction values in Normandy, and victory screen attached.

Also, I figured out how to get the images scaled properly. I think it has something to do with the Retina display on the mac having 4 possible pixels for each pixel. That sounds odd but that's sort of how it works.

Turn 22 late October 44. Western Allies still bottled up in the bocage. They own the Contentin peninsula but have not been able to break out. I think their lack of success in the air has had much to do with this. Interdiction levels are shown below.

Another turn - now at the end of October 1944. Turn 22 coming up. Allies still not able to break out. Italy stalemated. For a change I zoomed out for the wide view

November 21, 1944

I didn't make any screenshots this time. Lost quite a few bombers to flak, but shot down a fair number of Allied fighters in return. Nothing at all has changed on the front lines.

It's now Nov 21st, 1944 and the Allies are still bottled up at the base of the Contentin peninsula. In Italy the front line is as it was at the start. Planes are flying overhead, but both sides are dug in and pretty much immovable. Victory point total currently at -600

Nov 28 44

The Allies try a flanking invasion in Italy north of Rome, near Citivechio. It is promptly thrown back into the sea. Over Normandy it is quiet as the weather is atrocious so no one is flying. (Well, a few brave souls did).

Dec 19, 44, Turn 30.

The war drags on. Snow in the north, rain in Italy. Very little happening on the ground as both sides dig in and try to stay warm and dry. The Allies still have not been able to break out from Cotentin. In Italy an invasion on the west coast just north of Rome was defeated.

First picture is the hex possession with units removed. Stalin is on the move but still only near Warsaw.

Next the area of the invasion in Italy north of Rome. The invasion came ashore at Tarquinia and was ejected from the beaches by the units bordering it and 2 motorized divisions which have moved back to their original positions in the defensive line.

comparing this to your last tussle, it beyond any doubt hammers in the message that the only real force multiplier for the allies is their air power ... and you can't leave that to the AI (at least in PBEM).

His failure to generate a deadly level of interdiction over Normandy early on really allowed you to re-act with no constraints?
