I bought War in the West after a bit of agonising but soon after it came out.

I had asked this friendly forum for advice, and on the strength of that gave it a go.

Since then it has been very well worth the investment, although I've spent more time reading forum posts and after action reports than playing, but I find myself increasingly drawn in.

I am intimidated by certain posters, who seem to spend their whole lives digging into the minutiae of the stats, but on the other hand that is clearly part of the beauty of this game.

I have no idea what Pelton or Seminole would be like face-to-face, and one Step Back clearly doesn't want to know (at least with regard to Seminole), but if either of them invited me to dinner I would accept.

Anyway, my not very interesting update is only this. I did buy Torch. I just achieved a minor victory for the Allies against Rommel.

To me, this is success!!

It's great game, and this is a great forum.

Cheers,

Rich

Congratulations on the Torch Allied victory!!!

I hear the logistics are very difficult for the Allies.

The feeling I got the first time defeating a Allied invasion was that of Winged Victory.

I got Torch but haven't played a scenario yet, got two 43-45 campaigns going.

i've never read more than a few lines in the manual, watched a few video's mind you, have tested it for more than 200+ hours and still learning, but have won almost every map battle from either side and lost as many times as i've won i'd must say, then again i play on easy, have FOW off, have the AI do most of my air planning and enjoy it a lot. I'm not intimidated by anyone, as no matter what, i won't play online and never will, as once any games goes to the 99 degree, where you need to study and pass a exam to be top dog, i'd lose and tbh would no longer enjoy it or play it, it's not about just winning either, while some wish to know how many bullets a Yak can fire, i don't, some wish to know where a town is in south what ever, again i don't, i want a evening or afternoon battle, a week while i'm on hols away for pure fun, with this i get it, as it's at my level, with my settings used that is, i also know that when my level grows and the game gets too easy, i can alter it and still get a great game.

so it's not for this year, and won't be thrown next year either, WITE hasn't been played by me for more than 20 hours in total, but i will do it one day, WITW will be still on the HD in 5 years time, so for price it's a very good long term bond / investment imo

so if you are like me, a beginner, it's a great game, best WW2 game out atm by a long way, it's the benchmark that all others are aiming for.

if you are a medium to groghead level of skill, this game will still test you, and most of the time if set correctly beat you depending on battle and side picked, as the AI is good and can be a challenge to anyone.

once you are a Jedi WITW & East master, know the manuals inside out and can quote from it from memory, you still see them playing it? so the question must be why? is it that good really?

no answers on a post card needed, it's a yes as they still are

a win or lose matters little, the question is and i think i already know your reply is "did you enjoy it"?

the games like life, you get out what you put in, if you only have 4 hours a week to play, and some one else puts in 8 hours plus a day for a couple of months, over time one should hopefully be a lot better player, not always but you get me point.

as long as you enjoy it, and get pleasure out of it, at what ever level your at, that's all that matters, with each read you get more knowledge, so each time you play you adapt and add more to your skill level and in the end you get a better score.

in time you can alter the settings to get a harder and more of a challenge if you wish, as your skill grows, while it's different enough each time you play, for me as you hardly ever make the same moves twice and get the same results, the game should last in theory a life time.

so even a loss is successful as long as you learn your mistakes and don't re make then.

enjoy, and agree it is very helpful here and very active...

depends on your skill level and what level of difficulty you play on, it can be a real challenge in some battles / maps, but if the difficulty gets too hard, the challenge gets too much, drop the difficulty level down a bit and play it a few times and learn how it plays and reacts, then move it back up and at least know then what to do and when, it will teach you this way i find and is kind of fun learning as well while you do it.

you skill level must be good already as your doing the harder stuff first with a campaign started :)

Well yes, I am currently quite busy with stats, but certainly not my whole life long That doesn't have to intimidate you.
I can tell you what intimidates me with these games: these stats!

The reason why I am after all these numbers is because I need to understand them to achieve my goal to understand the game. I don't want to risk unnecessary losses due to my unawareness of the way it works.
Yes, you can play the game without studying how much tons of fuel exactly will arrive at your beachhead. Bring in a decent amount of stuff and in most cases it will work pretty fine. But I want to get behind the numbers of success and failure.
Why? Two reasons:
1. They did so 70 years ago. Planning of military advances, invasions, general logistics took a huge amount of brains to assure that the grand strategy gets the best chances to succeed.
2. Probably because of point #1, the devs invented all these great mechanics into the game. Even if I might not have to, I absolutely want to understand these mechanics they gave me at hand to make use of them the most efficient way.

Side effects: I will get used to the game so much deeper and all these intimidating numbers won't feel that intimidating anymore.

Those stats are there to help us, not to scare us away. Since these games are complex, we should enjoy any helping features we can make use of. So I am curious about how to use all these.

Of course that is only my point of view. There certainly is no "right" way to play this great simulation.

On somethings, and that is off and on, I lose alot. I just jumped in. Like drawing a cirle without knowing Pi. Plus playing a campaign gives me a more time brfore Iam defeated. Trying to understand things individually and as a whole, testing new ideas, changing strategies. I know its just variables, constants, functions and graphics, but what is a musical instrument until you play it. The depth of the real world modeling in this series is the best, and having done a little programming I like to ponder how real world events are/canbe/shouldbe modeled by computers in historical sims.

True, some numbers you need to know for that turn, others you need to know the changes in that number over turns- TRENDS. Would like to see more categories in the Metric Screen. Expand the Production info in the Metric screen to included the rest: Supplies in Units, ammo in Units, etc.. and Vechicles in units, Vehicles in Pool, etc. And any other categories you can think of. You can keep up with the changes in you head or by writing them down, but to see it (TRENDS) graphed change/time would be the best. Would make it easier to see, therefore understand, the affects/effects off a player's strategy changes

The player is doing what the commanders and their staffs of 1000's did. Yea, the ability to keep up with the changes in numbers and more tooltips for the mouse over.

I also would like a room of 50 women typing and crunching data for me.
