Playing Battleground Italy and I can not get the US 5th Army HQ to unload in any of the Italian ports that I have. I keep getting the message that I don't have enough port capacity to unload. It is the only unit I've got on ships that I'm trying to unload. How do I look to see how much this evidently bloated HQ needs? I can see the port capacity on the ports when I am looking at the logistics but I can't figure out how much this stupid HQ needs. I'm sure their is some subsection in the manual somewhere but reading it makes my head hurt.

The HQ in the example above would require a remaining port capacity of 5 to unload in a port (4209/1000 rounded up).

It's possible that 5th Army HQ has been loaded up with lots of sub units, and those are counting in the HQ's overall transport cost.
Try placing 5th Army in the port in Italy and then assign the SUs to corps HQs, or go into units on the island in the command chain and see if you can pull the SUs out of 5th Army HQ.

as most captured ports are damaged and need to be repaired and over time do get better, some won't be of any use for larger units for a long time if at all, so better to use the ones that can handle the size, but that then limits the amounts of units that can go through that port each day, so takes time to build up the force, so it's a balance.

ports help both side in war, so if you bomb them to death before and then do some hard fighting to take them / capture them, don't expect them to be in good shape or ready for action any time soon, it really is that real a game, that's why so many love it and play it and still over time talk about it and also enjoy it...

this reminds me the first time I played the full campaign. I had left all the support units in SHAEF until after I invaded France, and then couldn't understand why I could not get SHAEF transported over :)

You should unload it in a temporary port hex that is created by your landing (as long as you leave the amphib next to the hex). They have unlimited capacity for unloading troops.

iirc, "Battleground Italy" has no temp ports.

"Battleground Italy" has amphibious HQ units. If he uses them for invasions he should gain some temp ports.

Good point, I forgot the scenario doesn't start with any temp ports.

Too late for that now, at least until the next invasion.

Well I can't get 5th Army into Italy because of the port capacity so it's sitting in North Africa. How do I get rid of the support units to get it to a small enough transport cost to get it into Italy. Here's what I've got with 5th Army if I did the upload right

Click on a support unit...say the 191st Tank Battalion

Then Click on HQ on the left to change its HQ from 5th US army to another HQ....preferably one already in Italy.

The 191st Tank Battalion will no longer be in the 5th army..making it that much smaller. And it will have transported over to the continent.

You can clear all the support units out this way...PUSHING them into HQ's. Using the ASSIGN SUPPORT UNITS button PULLS support units, but wont pull them over water. PUSHING will push them over water.

Thanks! I'd been trying to pull them so we'll give pushing them a try when the next turn comes in.

You can't push them into a corp HQ over water though. So make sure you have an Army HQ in the area you want the support units to go.
