So far, I have keept constructionships on automation, bar a few instances, and they keep pumping out new mines. I have never seen them stopping that. Are they doing this until the private sector runs out of cash?
Is there any relation between number of colonies or population ant the amount of mining stations that pop up? I am wondering, wether it might be sufficient to do it manually and only pick for example the best 10 sites for any given ressource and build there, fuelsites probably a bit more of course. How does the AI decide, wether to build mining stations equally distributet around my empire or only in the best locations? When I set up a new colinie somewhere far away, does it matter wether it has a spaceport when it comes to automaticly building mining stations in the vicinity?

I believe the AI will build new mines as long as there are locations to build mines at. Under normal circumstances the civilian economy won't run of cash.

You do not need _that_ many mines. If you do it manually pay attention to shortages, and also possibly the price of resources shown in the expansion planner. The AI is likely to "just build" anywhere. If you do it yourself it may be a good idea to have mines for the needed strategic resources near the spaceports that will build stuff.

Also, you can never have too many fuel mines. I will build a gas mine on most if not all the fuel locations in my empire as the game matures. I have the habit of always queuing a fuel mine when I get a new colony.

Keep in mind that the need for resources (and mines) depend on the pace of the game. How fast are you playing related to game years? How many ships are you losing in the process? A quicker, more aggressive game need more resources, thus more mines. The difficulty also influence the performance of your mines.
