I haven't given the Soviets so much as a look until now but am curious to see how they play. Ormster is my (all too formidable) opponent.

I still await my physical copy, so as with my attempts at playing the Germans, the intention is to play purely from in-game assistance and the odd helpful hand from any forumites who care to help - rather than any perusal of the manual (I hate reading on-line).

I read that the game designers meant for this game to be playable 'out of the box' and I have to say, based on what I have encountered so far, the team have succeeded admirably here.

If I know comparatively little about the Eastern Front, I know actually very little about the Soviet side. So this will be interesting and (hopefully) a learning session for me.

These are the options in play.

First things first. I (Comrade Stalin himself) have to choose an objective.

I have three choices - all costing 0pp. These are to save Moscow, Leningrad or Rostov. I will go for saving my capital.

Next its the subject of Finland. It appears I can trade Victory Points for lessening the chances of Finnish intervention (beyond the historical border?). I elect to maintain the status quo.

Next I can trade army commander initiative for victory points. Again I maintain the status quo.

Next up its the Stalin Line. Same answer - no improvements requested and no VP's lost.

Finally its Japan and the Siberians. I can lose victory points in return for the Siberians arriving earlier - or gain VP's in return for them keeping a watching brief over the Kwantung Army. I elect the maintain the status quo approach once again.

And so. It's the 21st June 1941. I sit at my desk pondering reports from Comrade Beria and others. So little time, so many people to purge.....

But I put this paperwork down. Tonight I needn't concern myself with all this - for tonight is a time of celebration. I can sit back and raise a toast to myself and how clever I am.

Thanks to my diplomatic genius Mother Russia's western borders are not only safe - but I have expanded them greatly too in the last 2-years; Eastern Poland, Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina (ha ha Hitler didn't see them coming) large tracts of Finland and the Baltic States. Perfect.

Whilst I wait for Hitler and his strutting porcine p****s to slug it out with those weak-kneed Western Allies (well those that are left anyway - ha ha) I am free to build up our armed forces. Thousands of aircraft, tanks and even shiny battleships all on the way.

Yep. I am the master of all I survey, life is good. I am a true genius. What could possibly go wrong?....

Turn 1

Reports are coming in of attacks on Mother Russia from as far north as Petsamo to as far south as Lvov. What trickery is this? Who is behind this attempt to sour relations between myself and The Fuhrer?

The Germans and Russians - why, we are friends, our two peoples have an understanding, we share the same peace loving ideals, we both like propaganda posters featuring closely shaved men with shiny biceps, carrying farming equipment and big busted woman suckling babies at their breast.

The Germans - they are our friends, they would not attack us? I am being asked left, right and centre for permission to attack, for permission to bomb enemy territory. This is madness.

But Russia need not worry. I, of course, take complete control of the situation. I order all units to remain in their barracks, all arms are to be kept under lock and key. No one is to fire on anybody. All planes are grounded. The plotters will not trick me, and in a couple of days when this misunderstanding has been resolved, we will all laugh about this - and I will then shoot the people responsible.

This is different to playing the Germans. My instinct is to turn and run out of range (where possible). But its all just a bit of a mess! So I think I will tool around a bit and see what happens.

First point to make is how disconcerting it is when the Soviet counters are 'greyed' out. They look like West Ham United???

Anyway. North of Lake Ladoga I seek to retreat, but keep the units in place further north, to threaten the Finish flank.

In the Karelian Isthmus I actually move forward with the Soviets to try and meet fire with fire....

Just remember, your divisions get no replacements.

And hit the panzers whenever you can.

Thanks - I didn't know that. I've just tried one attack on some Romanians - and that didn't even make a dent Presumably I will need to pick my attacks very carefully ....assuming by the end of next turn I have any units left to attack with!

That looked and felt brutal!

Don't know if you looked through the reinforcement schedule, but you get a freight train's worth of armies in the center.

You may want to use that card that lets you switch one to the other fronts.

I firstly look at the history of the last turn. I think Orm has the measure of this game as the progress he is making is quite frightening.

I check out the advice from Aurelian (thank-you) and see that there are two reinforcement cards. These tell me that I can deploy the 21st and 22nd Army Groups (these are part of the Stavka Reserve) in the Central Front.

I place one in Minsk and one in Orsha. Frankly with the rate of advance exhibited so far I fear that Minsk may have been too optimistic... but...

I've also ordered a garrison to a currently ungarrisoned town - and have chosen Polotsk.

Next up is to find up what exactly I have - or at least what I still have left - under my command. I know so little about the Soviet army in any detail so here is a great chance to learn something.

So let's take it from the top.

The Northern Front is commanded by that donut Voroshilov (note to self - why did I keep him on?). Hold on - should this be Popov? Ahh.. no it looks like the Soviets have been given three army groups too in this game, so there is some streamlining in play. Okay, lets proceed on that basis, using italics where features are not in game as with my other AARs.

Northern Front - Marshal Voroshilov
Northern Front - General Popov
7th Independent Army (stationed opposite Central Finland) 6 Divs
14th Army (not in game)
23rd Army (stationed in the Karelian Isthmus) 10 Divs
+ Mechanised Corps and other units

Looks like there is also the Leningrad Military District HQ with a further 6 Divisions under command.

What I was getting at is that you will get cards that allow you to put an army from the center to either the north or south. (1 turn delay IIRC) :)

So that is where things are at present. According to Glantz there should be a further four armies forming up soon as part of Stavka Reserve. Well they cannot come fast enough!

I play a card so that 16th Army turn up at a front of my choosing.

In Latvia and Lithuania all I can do is place as many road blocks and obstacles in the way as I can. 184th Rifle Division guards the main road to Riga and is given the task of holding two panzer and one motorised division in check.....

27th Army consolidate - and I hope are digging in - along the Dvina.

The Central Front is on the brink of collapse - there just are not enough units to place in the way of the German juggernaut. I am going to have people shot for this (if there is anyone left to shoot that is)!

In the northern sector of the Southern Front the 1st Panzergruppe are handily placed to breakout onto the plain. The only small amount of good news is that 17th Army are some way behind.

On the Black Sea Coast and beyond, the concern is the beating 9th Army have taken. Kishinev needs to hold.... I have given the appropriate encouragement to my commanders in that region.....

Run man, run! Preserve your army and dig in into defensible terrain.

Check out Michael T and his AAR. He's putting on a clinic on how to play the Soviets.

Not sure what my increasing levels of paranoia mean, but the fall of Lvov results in another +20.... Mmmmm time to shot some people I think.

A quick look at the last turn makes for grim viewing. This could be the quickest German victory in history!

Never mind - must stay positive .

I place 19th Army at Smolensk.
I take a chance and place 20th Army at Polotsk
I place 16th Army at Mogilev.

I regret placing 20th Army at Minsk now - it was indeed far too optimistic...

I play a fortification card, constructing fortifications behind the river between Minsk and Mogilev.

I place a garrison in Ostrov.

I place Zhukov in Minsk. AAHHHHH!!! I forgot everything takes time - he doesn't arrive for 4 days - by which time Minsk will likely be captured. Rats.

What remains of 7th Army (that can still move) pulls back to the 1939 border. 23rd Army does the same. I suspect that the Finnish ability to strike beyond the borders depends on German progress of AGN. If that is true I will need to expect a Finnish incursion in the near future. I just hope I get some more replacements....
