Merry Christmas.
Got a new HP 23" all-in-one computer three weeks ago. Windows 10. Replacing a five-year old Dell. Love it.
Reading SPQR by Mary Beard. It is very recent and covers the history of Rome from its beginnings until 212 AD, when Caracalla gave Roman citizenship to all free inhabitants of the empire. I am about halfway through. Very good and readable.
Best new games. I'm not sure. Barbarossa. I'm playing a game right now. Wars of Napoleon. Bought it but haven't played yet. WITW Torch. Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm Germany Reforged. Too many games, not enough time.
CD. Last thing I bought was Rhiannon Giddens. Tomorrow is My Turn. Her music might be called Americana, American folk influenced.
I had cataract surgery recently, one eye in November, the other eye Monday. I can see like when I was 19. Truly amazing. Not only fixed the cataracts but corrected very poor vision in one eye. I can also actually see the road when driving at night now.

Getting cataracts was the best thing that ever happened to me! Got 20/20 vision for the first time in my life

Definitely a great Christmas present!

My Christmas present was the demise of my backup generator. Blew out the top seals and oil is everywhere :P

Now I'm back to not being able to pump water. No more games for me for the next 5 years :(

Sorry to hear that, Rhonda. Do you have a Plan B if things don't work out well at your ranch?

Nope! I can manage and have overcome all the adversity that I have faced!

Plan "D" is dying out here though.

Sadly this will be a Christmas not forgotten.

After visiting our daughters house on Christmas day we retreated to our cabin to enjoy the weekend together with just me, the missus and our 4 Boston Terriers. After arriving and opening some modest heartfelt gifts I took the dogs out to chase the ball as they always do. After throwing the ball at 8:50 pm on Christmas night I witnessed my alpha male dog run headlong into a tree at full speed. He had been running across the yard for several years but must have had his attention on the ball because he never slowed a bit. He hit it and didnt even cry out. As he laid there unconscious I yelled for my wife who came running. He died right there as I tried CPR and my wife screaming to the sky. It was my wife's closest dog and needless to say Ive spent the last 27 hours trying to hold my wife and myself together. To not much avail. What started out as the best Christmas in years has turned into a nightmare where I just cant shake what should have and what shouldnt have been.

Dug a hole last night underneath the Persimmon tree that took him away from us and have been listening to heavy rain for the last 20 hours. In the morning we will pack up and leave, minus a huge part of our family. I don't look forward to that. He was with us for 7 years almost to the day.

r.i.p Gunner.

A heartbroken mo reb

Really sorry to hear that Mo Reb

From the way you describe it, if there is any consolation, it sounds like he didn't suffer.

And with no sun yesterday the batteries died at midnight (with a -8 degree windchill). Today I found all the plumbing from the wellhead to the house frozen and burst after the heat tapes and heat lamps went out.

Problems tend to cascade out here... one thing after another fail.

I'm not going to fix the pipes, will just do without water like I did for most of last year. With no backup generator and lots of cloudy cold weather predicted, it would just happen again.

My neighbor, Diane, called to tell me that she is without power or water at her ranch.

Winter is tough when you are out here alone.

Thank you all so much. I'm fine. I can handle it. But my sweet wife? Not so much.

This time I cant make it better nor fix it.

In 1995, found my 7-year-old Dalmation choked to death on a ball a few minutes before we got to him. Even the vet couldn't pry it from his throat. Honestly, it took years for the nightmares to stop, and we never got another pet.

You'll do a lot better, Mo. And sorry for the disasters in AZ.

OH Wow! So sorry for your loss my Friend I lost my dog about 1 year ago, my lovely Pom Nickie, I still miss him every day. Would love to get another one but my wife says the pain of loosing him is so strong that falling in love with another Dog or Pom and loosing him/her again is too much for her right now. Maybe in a little while we will get another one.

At my age I look more forward to having the time off from work (we get time off without taking holidays between Xmas and New Years part of our Union Contract, so Bonus time) and having the family come by all together to celebrate. Heck we even get to keep my 7 year old granddaughter a full week, aah that will be so awesome!

I got Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U:

http://xenobladechroniclesx.nintendo.com/

(had to dust it off as I haven't touch it since I finished Zelda Windwalker a while back), and BOY!!! What a frigging Game! Best RPG/JRPG I have played in ages, the continents are huge and gameplay and battles are superb, I highly recommend it to any RPG enthusiast! So between my time with my granddaughter and this game I will truly enjoy my Winter Holidays.
