3 x B-17E Fortress at 6000 feet
3 x B-17E Fortress at 6000 feet

Air attack on Irau , at 42,43

Allied aircraft
B-25D Mitchell x 16

no losses

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 1

Attacking Level Bombers:
8 x B-25D Mitchell at 6000 feet

Naval bombardment of Irau, at 42,43

Japanese ground losses:
Men lost 32

Airbase hits 1
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 7
Port hits 1
Port supply hits 4

The BB TF gets in and out again. Not sure why there’s port damage, unless the IJN is in the process of building a level one port.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Gili Gili at 17,42

Allied Ships
SS S-47

Chased under again, no attack launched.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 37,35

Japanese Ships
AP Sangetsu Maru

Allied Ships
SS Trout

Trout at least takes a shot at an AP – first one in a few days.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The raid on GG has raised the port damage from 32 to 46. Still 5 points of airbase there as well. 2 engineer units there will be busy for a few days.

The raid at Irau has caused no discernable damage. 3000 engineers and 4 x INF units are at Irau. No indications of an invasion being launched from there.

Quark has his APs spread across both SOPAC and SWPAC. Of note are 3 tankers spotted by the coastwatchers at PM.

The four engine bombers are being stood down. Their fatigue is starting to get prohibitive, even with the night raids.

Two subs sent towards PM, hoping to intercept the tankers as they return east.

I have decided to send my 3 CVs towards NG via RH. Maybe Quark will be getting complacent there.

S-44 had her floatation damage jump from 80 to 90 in one turn due to the rainy weather. 180 miles to LV and safety. Can she make it?

More to come…

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 34,37

Japanese Ships
DD Arashi
DD Hayashio

Allied Ships
SS Grayling, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage (sunk)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 14,43

Japanese Ships
TK Toho Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
SS S-47

And sometimes, they get unlucky. The attack on the tanker was responded to by 2 PCs. PCs guarding tankers….?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My three carriers are back in the ocean. They are headed WNW, towards the GG/PM area. Quark has been sending supply ships there, and it needs to stop. If the enemy carriers respond, fine. I’ll sink them as well.

More (I’m sure) to come….

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back to the game, trying to get my bearings after no action for about 3 days.

Saratoga is 1 day west of Noumea, and will try to repair as much of her 6 SYS damage as she can before Enterprise returns.

Shifting P-39s to Wunpuko and standing the Marine pilots down. Maybe I’ll get lucky and have a P-39 upgrade to a P-38 while its there. Doubt it, though – as only 2 P-38s are available in the pool (only 34 short).

Wasp and Lexington refuel in RH before taking station south of GG. Maybe they can catch a tanker or two in the Coral Sea.
The Americal Division is unloading in Noumea. 2 more 1st MarDiv units loading at Noumea en route for LV. LV is up to 170K of supplies. Wunpuko is now at 12K itself. Time to ponder occupying the base I built at K’topo or whether to leave it as bait.

The B-17s in NC haven’t flown against Lunga since I moved the fatigued squadrons to Noumea. Two days of clear weather, and nothing.

Louisville and Northampton are back in theater with their destroyers.

More to come….

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the weather turning bad again, I’ve cancelled all flights except for CAP at my major bases. The A-20s at TV will still run ASW flights, they seem impervious to fatigue or morale problems – and none have been lost for any reason the entire campaign.

Transports still ferry the 1st MarDiv to LV. The last of the troops load today.

I’m back within 5000 points of Quark. He lost 6 aircraft last turn, to my one (a B-17 didn’t return).

My experiment with allowing the computer to control the subs for the past few weeks wasn’t a success – at least in my eyes. They kept running from point A to B to C…. seemingly in response to every little sighting. I don’t care to operate subs like that, so I’ve re-established control and have directed all my subs back to port.

Saratoga with her 6 SYS damage has returned to Noumea and her TF has been disbanded. The CLAA Juneau has 9 SYS in Noumea, and she has the distinction of having the highest damage level there.

Wasp and Lexington will leave RH and make for Brisbane. I’ll let them rest there for a few turns.

More four engine bombers on the way from the States. 7 P-38s now available in the pool.

More to come…

Wx: Thunderstorms

Over the past few days, the combat reports have been brief, indeed:

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/08/42

Weather: Thunderstorms

I've pulled my horns in. Everything (with exceptions noted below)is either in port or returning. Aircraft are being grounded and fatigue levels are dropping while morale levels begin to improve. SYS damage is being repaired.

The only forces sailing are as follows:
-- 2 x MSW in Noumea in case Quark gets an idea to send a sub with mines south.
-- Supply and transport convoys to LV. All 1st MarDiv units are now either en route to LV or already there. LV now at 170K+ supplies.
-- Tanker convoys to RH and Wunpuko. Wunpuko had 273 fuel delivered from Sabine, and I've ordered the tanker out of there and back to LV to finish off-loading fuel. Wunpuko is to be an emergency port only - no sense exposing a tanker more than I have to.
-- A small force has mined K'topo. I was going to try and sneak it into Irau but his recon started calling my ships off by name. So much for that thought.

CAP remains the only thing I want in the air.

South Dakota is 10 days away from PH. 4 cruisers are already there, waiting for destroyers to escort them over to Noumea.

11 P-38s now in the replacement pool. B-17s are now beginning to replace their losses while they rest.

Finally - yes, I have a plan. It will take time to enact. I am in the process of building my forces to begin a move into enemy controlled areas. Quark has at least 4 carriers at his disposal, so now is not the time for half-hearted attempts.

If I had my way, the rain would continue, and no combat would occur for at least another month.

We'll see.

More to come...

Take a look at this, as Quark gets an itchy trigger finger for combat:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
189 fighters on sweeps that fly long distance, and then don't attack. The attempt resulted in 15 of his fighters not returning - the most aircraft he's lost in a single day for a while now.

With my B-17s rested, I've decided to send 3 planes from Touho vs. Lunga, as well as 3 from TV to GG. Both squadrons are at 99 morale and 0 fatigue. A second B17 squadron at Touho is also at 99/0, and if the losses aren't too bad, maybe they'll rotate to attack Lunga as well.

Five B17 squadrons in varying stages of fitness now at Noumea. More on the way.

Also forgot to mention that there are now about 20 PT boats at Wunpuko.

Just something else for Quark to keep track of :)

More to come.

Actual combat from last night:

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/12/42

Air attack on Gili Gili , at 17,42

Allied aircraft

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress x 4 damaged

Runway hits 3

Attacking Level Bombers:
4 x B-17E Fortress at 6000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not the most impresive strikes, but ultimately, a mistake on my part even sending them in the first place. A few runway hits, and it cost 1 bomber I can't afford to waste. The bomber lost was from Touho on the Lunga run. The 26th squadron went from 99 morale to 82 with one mission (even at night the morale loss is staggering). 4 planes flew, one lost, three damaged, but none due to enemy action or AA fire.

The TV squadron attacks in normal range, and maintains a 99 morale. No losses or damage. Still, no need to push it. All bomber attacks cancelled until further notice.

A unit of the 2nd MarDiv boards transports and heads south from LV en route to Noumea. LV is now in the sole care of the 1st Marine Division.

South Dakota 4 days from PH, Enterprise 19 days out of PH. Transports and tankers en route to Noumea from PH as we speak. Essex is 90+ days away from PH, and Hornet is an even 100 days out of PH, but they're not part of my current scheme.

More to come..

Wx: Overcast

No combat to report as the rains subside. Time for a force update.

In theater now include 18 AK, 8 AO, 6 TK, 21 AP, 6APD, 2 BB, 3 CV, 5 CA, 4 CL, 4 CLAA, 29 DD, 3 DM, 2 DMS, 30 PT, and 17 SS (8 S-boats). At PH now include the battleship South Dakota, 4 CA, 1 CL, 1 CLAA, and 11 DD. I hope they release soon. 15 days from PH are the CV Enterprise and the CVE Long Island.

My plan for attack will be in both SOPAC and SWPAC. TV currently has an assault strength of 708 and will be my jump off point for an attack against PM. I have the two carriers in Brissy to support the operation. Lexington is completely repaired, and Wasp has a SYS damage of only 3. Together, with the Oz navy, they will support the move against PM.

In SOPAC, the 1st MarDiv is in place at LV. Saratoga is at Noumea, and she will, along with Enterprise support the operation against the Solomons. The two battleships at LV have SYS damage levels of 6 and 5.
South Dakota will join Saratoga when she arrives.

Quark has probably mined everything he can by now (he’s in love with the things) so minesweeper support will be crucial. I will probably need to nursemaid a couple of MSW from TV against PM with a tanker just to get them into position (surface forces in Oz aren’t extensive – I’m hoping Canberra and Leander get released shortly).

Every day I have to quash the impulse to send the carriers on “just one little raid north”. I don’t need a bout of rashness to spoil my plans now.

Finally, although there’s no way a simulation can reflect the critical “life or death” decisions a commander has to make in wartime, UV via PBEM goes a long way to have the decisions put at risk the hours (and hours…and hours…and hours) invested in the planning of operations and playing of the game. Another reason to recommend PBEM over the AI.

More to come...

Quark is getting anxious, and launches his own night raid against LV – though I’m sure the results aren’t what he expected:

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/17/42

Weather: Overcast

Air attack on Luganville , at 53,53

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 72

Allied aircraft

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty x 4 destroyed
G4M1 Betty x 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
PBY Catalina x 1 destroyed
PBY Catalina x 3 damaged
C-47 Dakota x 1 destroyed
C-47 Dakota x 2 damaged

Airbase hits 2
Runway hits 18

Attacking Level Bombers:
20 x G4M1 Betty at 7000 feet
13 x G4M1 Betty at 6000 feet
25 x G4M1 Betty at 10000 feet
11 x G4M1 Betty at 8000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The damage to the airfield is already completely repaired. Checking the aircraft loss report reveals the Allies lose only the two planes on the ground, while Quark’s night raid cost him 9 of his Betty long range bombers.

Attacks like that I can take all day and night long.

In 10 days, the 2nd Marine Division will be completely in place at Noumea, while the Army’s 43rd Infantry Division will have another unit in Noumea.

Transiting from SWPAC is 5th Air Force HQ, en route to LV to assist with the upcoming air campaign.

Saratoga down from 6 to 5 SYS damage. Another Gato class sub, the Amberjack is now at Noumea, and is forwarded to Basse-Poya.

Patience……….

Quark gets a night raid right, although he did lose 5 more aircraft last turn, 2 of them from the raids:

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 10/19/42

Cairns port damage at 11 – being repaired by the BF engineers. It won’t be as fast as an EAB or the SeaBees would have repaired it, but it’s getting repaired nonetheless.

Belated development of Koumac begins. Talk about a strategic blunder - >sheesh<.

Lexington is en route back to Noumea.

EPV now hosts four engine bombers as well as submarines. The 4E’s are just visiting. They’ll need to leave soon. A PBY squadron has been moved from LV to Wunpuko to extend its search range.

More to come…

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The report about the number of engineers must be correct, Lunga has only 8 damage left after the bombing raid. Fatigue loss minimal, even for long range strikes. Daytime strikes should accompany the night raids beginning tomorrow.

The 67FS is now flying P-38G aircraft, and I have moved them to LV to provide daytime CAP. One USN F4F-4 squadrom rotated to Goro to rest, a Marine F4F-4 squadron remains on night CAP responsibilities at LV.

The main invasion fleet is broken into three groups, all with good invasion commanders at the helm. The 1st Marine Division is loading as we speak.

3 CA SC TF should be spotted by Quark's scouts SSE of Rennell tomorrow, along with two BB TF containing my battleships just SE of the CA TFs, and following the battleships are my carriers. If Quark sees them all, he'll see a major fleet action towards Rennell. Tomorrow, my APDs with the Raider battalion make their run into the island to unload suring the night. 6 APDs carry the entire batallion. Mines are a worry, but I'm taking that chance.

In the Coral Sea, Wasp and her entourage continue to sail north towards GG. My ghost invaders turn due north and head for PM, GG, as well as a 2 ship TF made up of 1 AK and 1 TK (both empty) headed directly north towards Rossel Is.

3 more AKs arrive in theater, and they immediately load up the 2nd Mar Bn of the 2nd Mar Div for transport to LV.

3 C47 squadrons stand ready to airdrop the Paras onto Tulagi or Lunga - not sure which yet. The APDs will head back to LV after dropping off the raiders and FT the Paras arty to them whereever it is that they do drop into.

Should be an interesting next few days :)

More to come...

Wasp whittles down Quark’s ASW TF a bit. Don’t really know what to make of the “Oscar” fighters… none too impressive.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quark now has a confirmed CV target SSE of GG – will he chase it? Wasp is already steaming south…

In the Solomons, Quark found one of my DMs just north of Wunpuko, an AK at Wunpuko, an AK at K’topo, and that’s it. Clear weather today should reveal more of my forces gathering near Rennell. The APDs headed back to LV for some reason…I’ve ordered them again to Rennell. Most likely a brain cramp on my part caused the reversal.

Pleasantly surprised at the P-39D performance at night. Plans being made to add a squadron at each base where I have ships docked for night CAP until my Black Widows arrive.

My lone P-38G squadron is now at LV. A fourth C47 – the 33rd TCS is now at Touho (from Brissy), and will transfer to LV once they recover from the trip.

The Marines at LV are loading nicely. The Noumea – LV shuttle begins as the first of the 2nd Marine Division units is en route to LV. Have to remember to vary the routes a bit.

Four tankers spotted at Lunga, and I’ve ordered in an S-boat to investigate and attack if possible. An S-boat is also ordered into GG to snoop around a bit now that Quark’s ASW TF has been hit.

My battleships sail south to meet up with their tankers prior to making the run into Lunga. Refueling should take a couple of days, and the run to Lunga a couple of more. By that time, the bombers should have the airbase damaged into the 30’s, and perhaps the BB TF can finish the job. Still no sign of infantry support there – recon now shows 5 AA units, 2 CD units, 2 artillery units and 2 engineers. Infantry is sighted at GG, PM, and Irau – but not Lunga…

I’ve decided that once the Marines are at sea and headed north, if Lunga is still without infantry, then the paratroops will hit Lunga rather than Tulagi.

A word about recon – I’m sure Quark knows that the F5A unit provides the most accurate info, so I’m using 3 squadrons – 2 PBYs and the one F5A to recon Rennell, Irau, and Lunga – rotating the different planes day by day. Yesterday, the F5A reconned Rennell. They’ve retired to EPV to rest, but will be back in a couple of days to take one last peek at Lunga to check for an enemy infantry presence.

More to come…

That’s better…… base damage now doubled to 24 and more of Quark’s bombers killed on the ground.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Intelligence confirmed that the IJN PC23 sunk today as a result of damage incurred from Wasp’s airstrike.

Amazingly, even with clear weather, Quark’s search aircraft seem preoccupied with finding my subs, although I have five SC TFs within 200 miles of Rennell, and three of them will be surrounding the island tomorrow – none of which have been detected. He probably has an idea I’m close, however, as one of my Seagulls was spotted. The battleships refuel next turn and begin the run to Lunga. Another couple of turns like this one from the heavy bombers vs. Lunga and Quark’s LBA fleet there will be rendered impotent. He now has 5 AA units at Lunga, and has brought a third artillery unit in – presumably to act as a CD?

The weather may swing back to the Allies favor – with two days of clear weather, (it has to turn bad soon) my APs should sail north in something less than perfect skies, limiting Quark’s search capabilities even further.

The only question is whether Quark’s carriers head for the Coral Sea or the Solomons. He may be wise to my attempt to close Lunga and try to get his Vals off and back onto his CVs. On the other hand, he did spot Wasp headed south back to Brissy.

Wasp, after being sighted has turned due east and will attempt to guard the flank of the invasion. Saratoga and Lexington will be in range to cover the invasion by tomorrow.

More to come…

Perhaps they attacked too soon after transferring.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not an enormous amount of combat, just a signal of what is to come.

The raiders landed at Rennell, but one of my APDs, the Manley struck two mines and had to be scuttled after dropping off the Marines. All others are making for LV at best possible speed to pick up the next load.

Quark spotted quite a few of my ships that turn, and my 3 CA SC TFs are ordered due west from Rennell for one turn to meet Wasp as she steams NE towards Lunga.

For some reason, none of my B-17s even attempted to fly. All have morale 80+, but no flights last night. Lunga damage down to 18 – I need to keep the pressure on.

The battleships have refueled and are headed for Lunga with their DMS escort.

Saratoga and Lexingotn are sailing right up the throat of Lunga to launch a raid against any naval units found or, if none are spotted, they will hit the airfield at Lunga as well. This might backfire, but at least we’ll see how good 60 fighters and upgraded AA can protect the TF.

A couple of Quark’s subs were spotted heading SE from Irau. An SBD and a PBY squadron are set to 100% ASW to sniff them out.

All my subs are in place. Three of them patrol the deep water hexes of the Slot. One guards the entrance to the coastal run along the Solomons from Truk, and the other 7 surround the Solomons at various choke points.

The Marines of the 2nd division are landing at LV. Two more 2nd division regiments and their HQ are loading up at Noumea for the run to LV.

1st division Marines are almost entirely loaded onto transports. 2 of the 3 APs carrying them are loaded and en route to staging areas for the run into Lunga.

A fourth C47 squadron has been transferred into LV to carry the paras…

More to come…

These two attacks were a mistake on my part. I forgot Irau had a runway active when I set the secondary strikes for airfields. There was too much AA at Lunga for the planes to chance a strike there, so they chose the easier of the two targets. It may be a brilliant mistake, however, if it convinces Quark I have no intention of invading north of Irau and the B17 attacks are to merely suppress his LBA at Lunga.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Rennell Island

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 1057 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied assault odds: 28 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Rennell Island base !!!

Phase one complete. Skylark and Starling are en route and will sweep the remaining IJN mines while 2 FT TFs drop off supplies to the Marines. A PBY from Koumac is also en route to supply the troops there.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rennell had 81 supplies left on it, and that will sustain the Marines for one day. On the 30th, the two MSWs will be clearing the beach and the FT TFs will drop almost 1500 supplies. 3 slower AKs are en route as well, with almost 3000 supplies. The 14th SeaBees are loading at LV to build a base at Rennell.

The 3 AP TFs with the combat Marines from LV are at sea. They will rendezvous 60 miles east of Rennell before they make the run into Lunga. Also at that point 20 PT boats will meet a tanker and fuel up prior to deploying around San Cristobal to intercept Quark's AGs running back and forth to Irau. Finally, the BB TF with the battleship Washington will fuel there one last time before running to Lunga and bombarding.

Already en route to Lunga is the North Carolina TF to bombard the base there. Combined with another B17 strike at night that should just about close the airfield. As she leaves, Washington will arrive the next night to hit the base again. And by that time, the Marines should be, at most, one day out of Lunga. That’s when Quark will figure out what’s going on.

On the night before the transports arrive in Lunga, the paras will drop onto Lunga. I hope the AA values will be disrupted enough not to shred the C47s, but I have to get the paras attacking, especially vs. the CD units.

Washington and her DMS will stay in Lunga and join up with one of the AP TFs. North Carolina, having refueled, will sail into Lunga and join a second AP TF, providing AA and MSW support to the transports. The third transport will then split and join the other two.

South Dakota is 13 days away from Noumea, and Enterprise is 3 days from PH.

Another B17 squadron is 5 days from Noumea, but they won’t be combat ready for almost 4 or 5 days after that.

Wasp moves SE and will refuel about 180 miles S of Rennell. I’m keeping the 4 CA TFs in a box around her, almost 90 miles away on each side. I hope Quark will see this arrangement for a few turns, and then I can slip Wasp away while he sees the four corners but not the middle – and simply assumes she’s still there. A longshot, but worth a chance.

Lots more to come…

30 October 1942
Wx: Partly Cloudy

I'll post the CR last, I think the game is about to reach a turning point.

Here's the highlights. On the down side, Wasp was sunk, with almost all of her escorts. One destroyer is all that is left. Quark has created the mother of all CV TFs and attacked with 300+ planes vs. 4 ships. I count 7 CVs and CVLs in the TF.

On the plus side, S-47 put two into the side of the battleship Kirishima before being sunk herself.

Lots of combat, but you can read that below. Here's the nuts and bolts -

The paras fly tonight. 5 C47 squadrons make the trip. Lunga base damage at 49. I'll have to chance it. All AP TFs ordered into Lunga at top speed. Starling detached from Rennell MSW duties and will sail for Lunga herself. Washington's TF will make Lunga tonight, and they are ordered to remain there.

With that many carriers so close, I have decided to run - not run away, but run towards his CVs. He knows I have two more CVs in the area. If I don't engage them now, they will slaughter the APs and the Marines on board. I have set the CV TF to sail NW on an intercept course with the IJN CVs, Do Not Retire, React on. I transferred 36 F4F-4s from Lexington and replaced them with one SBD and one TBF squadron.

If I can keep my carriers afloat for two more turns engaging Quark I'll be ecstatic. I'm not under any delusions here - I can't take out all of his ships, but I can't leave the APs naked like he did at Cairns. As strange as it may sound, at this point, my CVs are expendable - my transports are not. If I can capture the level 7 airfield at Lunga and plant my B-17s there I can pound away at the Shortlands and even Rabaul. If that does indeed happen, I can live without carriers until 1943. If not, the consequences may be an overwhelming IJN victory.

All SC TFs are converging on the IJN CVs from the south and west. Subs are converging from the north. My carriers are converging from the SE. I desparately need to get his CVs into a surface action against my cruisers, or get very lucky with my own CVs.

As I told Quark via e-mail - this may be the most important turn of the game.

More to come.....

Wx: Partly Cloudy

Very bad news in my attempt to take Lunga - it turns out that Quark had 2 full strength infantry regiments just stting there, waiting for me - 2 infantry units that never showed up (and still don't) on a recon list. I guess they were there, but not able to be displayed because too many units were on the scroll list???

It sure would have been nice to have all of the units detected to be displayed. I'm not sure how much more I could have done.

Would landing a force next to the base have displayed more units that repeated recon flights over a period of 2 weeks?

Needless to say, the paratroops who were supposed to engage a couple of CD units and some engineers were slaughtered. Now I have the remnants of the Marines at the doorstep of Lunga, looking at invading a base with heavy fortifications and with 35000 combat troops (infantry troops) defending it.

The shipping was also decimated. All carriers are gone. Upwards of 100 planes lost.

I promised myself I wouldn't gripe here, so I'll just post the details, congratulate Quark for his efforts, and try and save what I can.

I'm fairly certain I won't be attacking much for a long time. I've still got subs, but that's about it. Oh well - here you go:

The dispersed force is trying to make it back to land...American Legion sunk with most of their passengers lost. The 1st Marine Division is badly mauled, and all without firing a shot. The paras are gone. Subs and the small 3 ship DM force have been ordered to Rennell to evac the Raider BN there. I'd love to keep Rennel, but there's no way I can supply it.

Moving totally on the defensive again I need to repair what I can while rebuilding my forces. I'm not totally defeated, but Quark does enjoy a 6000 point lead. He said that taking an autovictory base will still be tough vs. my ground forces, LBA, and subs but I'm not sure he has to.

The AAR entries will be much more abbreviated for a time while the forces recover. Plane upgrades will be welcome, as will the arrival of Enterprise, Hornet, Essex, and a host of other surface forces.

Still, it is a shame I got impatient.

More to come (sooner or later ;) )

Having run out of targets and ammunition, Quark's 7 carriers retire, leaving the wounded to limp home. One of the wounded who didn't make it was the battleship Washington who was put out of her misery by two more torpedoes from an IJN sub.

Approximately 700 of the Marine Raider battalion remain at Rennell awaiting evacuation. 6 subs have loaded up and are en route to LV, with another 9 subs designated for transport headed to Rennell.

Ships have begun to arrive in Noumea and LV and unloading the Marines. Anything with damage over 15 is sent back to PH. No sense leaving targets I can't protect.

Back for a post after an extended absence... the last few days of which culminated in an infection of both sides of my eardrum :( After lots of prescription meds and stuff ;) back to plugging the dike with my fingers as Quark must surely be licking his chops.

My subs have almost evacuated the entire Raider battalion that went to Rennell - all told about 12 subs participated in the transport missions. They are going back to LV. The subs will be my main defense now, hopefully I can lop off an odd capital ship of two. LBA is still active and plentiful, and if I can hold on past 1/1/43 it will definitely be helpful.

All I can do is try to last beyond the auto victory, and move north just a bit at a time. The problem is Quark can just keep his carriers out at sea and move in when I send a transport anywhere.

More (hopefully...) to come :)

Back after relapse - docs finally got right drugs in me and I can get out of the da** guest bed and back on with life :)

Which includes preparing for the storm Quark must be contemplating if he wants to get his autovictory. Missouri has her task group SE of LV, and North Carolina has hers steaming from Noumea to a point SW of LV. A small cruiser TG led by Louisville patrols the strait between LV and EPV.

I have a second P-38G Lightning squadron, and both are now at LV, along with F4F-4s, SBDs and Avengers.

waiting....

More buildup on both sides...I sent a night raid of B17s into the ports at Lunga, no luck...and a daylight raid against the new airfield at Irau...minor damage only. Nothing more than token gestures, trying to husband what airpower I have left for "the big battle".

Enterprise still sits anchored at PH, despite numerous DDs and CAs also there available for excort. Perhaps their confidence in the area commander isn't too strong when operating carriers (not that I blame them). Maryland also sits tied to PH. 2 more carriers, Hornet and Essex are due into PH in 52 days.

25 P-38s now available in the pool, perhaps another P-39 unit can be replaced with the newer fighters soon. Probably need 36 in the pool for it to happen.

4 B-17s lost due to the raids, while Quark lost 2 of his long range Irvings yesterday:

2 Dec 1942: 2 additional recon squads have landed at TV and RH in Oz. They’ll be evicted, but I’m only attacking with one battalion at each location. Maybe that will keep Quark in the dark a bit longer. We’ll see.

13 subs patrol around GG, each sitting quietly in their assigned sector. Meanwhile, IJN APDs at Irau have already detected and destroyed the mines laid by my S-boat. At least I know there are APDs at Irau…Question is are they delivering or picking up for a run on Wunpuko? Why were there no recon squads there? I’ve decided to send my CA TF near Wunpuko for a couple of nights to react against any FT raids…

Subs have been deployed to the Shortlands and that island in the middle between the Shortlands and GG (can’t ever remember that one). An S-boat makes its way into the Shortlands, hoping for a tanker……

Good news from PH…Maryland is en route. 18 days away. Still nothing about Enterprise.

I’ve tallied up my squadron air strength in SOPAC. At LV – 3 P-38, 3 Marine F4F-4, 2 Marine SBD, 3 Navy SBD, 1 Navy TBF. At EPV, 1 F5A, 2 Navy F4F-4, and 1 Navy TBF. Noumea has 4 P-39, 3 B-26, 4 B-17, and 1 Marine F4F-4. Koumac: 1 Navy F4F-4, 1 PBY, 2 B-24, and 5 B-17. Basse-Poya: 1 B-25, 1 B-17, 1 Navy SBD, 1 Navy TBF. Touho: 2 B-17, 1 Navy TBF. Tomo: 4 B-26. Goro: 6 C-47.

One of the P-38s is at 99 morale, the others hover around 60.

As Quark said in his e-mail, “Things are starting to get interesting.” I have a feeling he’s right.

More to come…

More suicide scouts land, this time at ground zero - LV itself. Even though I set only one unit to attack at both RH and TV, all units were displayed on the combat summary page :( If that's the case, then everything I have at LV will squash the scouts, and the heck with it. So far, I have ejected scouts at Koumac, TV, and RH - nearly 100 men lost. I know Quark has a multitude at his command, but every bit helps. I lauged a bit when I saw the results of the combat, and my mind flashed back to the movie "Zulu" (IMHO - a classic :) ) where; after the first probe attack against the 100 or so defenders, a British soldier yells out, "60! we got at least 60!!", to which another replies, "That leaves only 3,940 to go."

Appropiate indeed.

The results:

A sub attack today, but no joy when S-37 takes on an IJN APD. One salvo of torpedoes lost, and both sides continue on their way. S-37, having dispersed the capital shipping in the Shortlands, now settles into a familiar patch of deep water between the Shortlands and Lunga, a typical “half-way” point for ships headed between those two ports. Let’s see what stumbles past her way……

In a fundamental shift of strategy, the four-engine bombers have been ordered to undertake naval recon flights at 20,000 and attack targets of opportunity. All of the sudden, the increased air search presence reveals the IJN fleet in much more detail. As far as actually attacking shipping from 20,000 feet, I realize the chances of success have been reduced with the 2.3 patch, but desperate times etc……

Lo and behold, guess what happens on the very last attack of the afternoon, after four previous flights were unable to locate their targets? :D

Dec 5, 1942

No combat of note today, save the probe by Quark’s suicide squads at EPV. I have sent the 135th RCT of the 25th ID to expel them.

Storms today grounded most aircraft, and more are predicted for tomorrow.

Quark admitted to me today that my level bomber attack on his ships at Lunga caused most of his transports to unload two days of troops and supplies and scatter. He also admits it’s probably realistic, but not what he ordered.

A bit more on the defense at LV – in addition to the troops defending the base, I have three CD units in place as well. I hope they cull the attackers a bit before they hit the shore. I mention this because in 10 days, the 31st CD Art Bn is due in, and I’m debating whether to send it to Koumac or not. Quark is probably drawing up some type of bombardment to try and chase my bombers out of there, especially in light of what happened to his transports at Lunga. I would. The prospect of sailing transports through 2 or 3 days of constant attacks from bombers he cant reach with his fighters may not appeal to him, irregardless of the odds of the planes actually hitting anything. If I don’t send it to Koumac, I’ll probably send it to EPV. Noumea already has 2 of their own, so it will most likely be useful elsewhere.

Another CVE, the Sangamon is due into theater in 5 days, with Suwannee and her escorts expected in 12 days. Enterprise still sits at dock in PH. Essex and Hornet are 45 days and 49 days from docking at PH, respectively.

Also, in two days, 48 Navy SBDs are due in at Noumea. I can sure use them.

More to come…

Weather: Partly Cloudy

Weather cleared, but the bombers are still recovering. I sent one squadron on a search only mission to give the impression I’m better off than I am.

Good news from Lunga – S-37 scores with two torpedoes into the IJN destroyer Kawakaze. She’s not sunk, but I’ll bet she ain’t feeling too good, either. I’d rather use the torpedoes on the transports, but all hits are welcome.

The report:

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/08/42

Weather: Thunderstorms

Sub attack near Lunga at 38,40

Japanese Ships
DD Kawakaze, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS S-37

Welcome back, S-37!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Wunpuko

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 39 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 2600 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 0)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quark reports that his bug is acting up again, causing his fleet to scatter. Perhaps the transports have an inherent “retirement allowed” command to steer away from combat?

More to come…

Wx: Thunderstorms (phooey!)

As the rains again settle in, some interesting developments to report. First, the IJN monster Yamato was spotted at Lunga. I don’t need her surprising me somewhere, and I’m glad I’ve spotted her, but I would be happier if I spotted her in Kiev ;) .

Also, I think Quark may be having second thoughts about Luganville. Lots of east – west traffic between Lunga and GG. Quark claims in the emails that the ships at GG are just executing supply runs, troop rotations, etc. The problem is that I’ve spotted more than one cruiser with lots of destroyer escorts. An awful lot of shipping for troop rotations. Then again, Quark may be trying to misdirect my attention, or even start shifting my troops around. I don’t know…

I now have a second CVE operating in theater. Sangamon is here, and I’ve decided to use her as a waypoint to transfer planes between SOPAC and SWPAC.

Just in case Quark decides to head for Oz again, that is.

I really don’t have much else to throw against him. SWPAC gets an artillery unit shortly, but that’s about it for a couple of weeks. C-47s stand ready to move reinforcements to either TV or RH from Brisbane if necessary, but that would leave Brissy dangerously undermanned.

Of course, at this point – does that matter?

Yesterday’s combat included a perfectly coordinated B-17 night attack on Irau’s airfield from EPV and Koumac. Also, I’ve backed off on the use of B-17s against shipping for now…too much attrition. I did set one squadron on attack and three of their planes went up against 63 Zeroes, damaging two of them before dropping their bombs on a school of fish:

At work (somehow, my students always know when one of my carriers is hit by an air attack - I wonder why that is?), so no access to the CR, but here goes:

The turn started off great, with one mine at Irau scratching the paint of an IJN FT DD, then my night raids kicked in, destroying two Zeroes on the ground at GG. When the sun rose, however, Chenango had 14 Kates come calling. She weaved and twisted, but the last flight of four planes hit her with two torpedoes. What was even more frustrating was the fact I had 10 fighters on board, set at 50% CAP but none of them even showed up!  Even a few may have made the difference.

(I admit, I was trying to get fancy and sneak the little CVE up to GG to try and pick off a AP or two. Sounds a bit hollow after the ranting about the IJN method of recon by suicide - turns out that's exactly what Chenango ended up doing :( I did find Quark's CVs - some of them anyway - way too far west for my liking. I think the Arizona Kid is eyeballing Oz.....)

Of course, I'll try and limp Chenango to port, but I'm under no illusions - Quark doesn't let things bleed long before putting them out of their misery.

I ought to send every carrier that shows up back to PH immediately  while I re-read the book, "Carrier tactics for Dummies"......

Unless I could trade a US CV for, say, 20 S-boats? :D

More to come...

Mines claim 5 hits today, 3 IJN and 2 USN ships. The IJN cruisers Mogami and Mikuma along with an IJN AP (Somethingkaze Maru...they all sound the same after a while...) strike mines NW of Lunga as they round the point on their way to Oz. (Quark admitted as much to me that the target is OZ - somewhere). Meanwhile, the South Dakota and Minneapolis hit mines at Irau during a bombardment run (guess who forgot to add a DMS with the BB TF? :( ) Minneapolis is hurt bad and will have to go back to PH ASAP.
The good news is the US SS Grampus was lying in wait among the mines as Quark's battleships and cruisers tangled with the mines. The bad news is she missed on 2 separate attacks on battleships :( . As Herbieh would say... "poo!"

Comments follow the report........

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quark's CVs are still headed on a beeline towards TV. I have 15 level bomber squadrons set on Naval Attack at TV alone. Also, if he gets in close, 3 SBD squadrons and one TBF squadron. I should get a P-38 upgrade within a day or so, and that should happen in Oz. They'll go to TV or RH.

Charter Towers has my reserves, 4 LBA and one FB squadron. RH is getting the two Liberator squadrons.

Chenango is apparently to be spared air attacks as Quark has an uncharacteristic moment of generousity. Of course, as they limp to TV, their attackers are right behind them, threatening to simply plow them into the waves (something like a wounded turtle trying to outrun an eighteen wheel truck).

Subs en route to SWPAC, and one each to Rossel and GG. I have a feeling Rossel is a fuel stop. Wish I had more mines, but I can't take the time to go get them.

More to come...
