As above, it's been some time since Universe was released and post release support stopped, anyone know if Codeforce is working on anything new?

Awesome news! I'd be interested to see how they improve the DW series, I already think that's pretty good but i guess they've reached the limits of the current game.

It's going to be tough with the massive competition upcoming. He has a make a better release game than DW Universe which had years of development.

To be honest it will be a winner if all they do is fix all the stuff floating around on the wanted features lists stuffed here and there on the forums and bring the graphics at least into modern 2d pixel art. No need for sweeping mechanics changes or a new direction.

Swap the engine to a modern and maintained one. Make a graphics overhaul in the process.
Improve the GUI, for instance with a smarter ship design and better ability to track resources and stuff. Make the UI flexible enough to move stuff around and scale as wanted.

Do wishlist improvements as said above. Do some key improvements to things like diplomacy, but keep the main mechanics of the game.

It would be lovely if some key things were quite configurable. So for instance pirates could be tweaked to being "old style pussies" or improved "current time mayhem".

I know nothing of what is ahead, but I have a hunch that I will be disappointed in at least one of the above :)

Then all we need is an expansion. Or a big patch.

my impression for a Distant Worlds 2 is that there must be more substantial changes than some fix here and there to be righly entitled as a truly successors.

ps: my compliments to Retreat1970 for is new Matrix Veteran forum status: you really deserved it

There are always changes that are hard to do. Build it from scratch with the lessons learned form the original, and take some new major features into the game from the beginning. That is a proper new game and not a patch. Reuse game logic and features and possibly some code, but have a brand new foundation for graphics and the rest.

I'm trying not to start ranting and putting videos and pictures of games that prove that multiplayer adds more fan-base and can actually be fun to 4x-space games..

But I don't want the kiddies to get run over..

Diplomacy is my thing, there just isn't enough options in game for my liking, same with spies, for instance tech sharing pact would be nice, same with spy information sharing, along with the option to spread rumors about an enemy empire, the list goes on, we'll just have to wait and see I guess!

Actually, I think you will find that most of us who will never once play a multi-player version of the game have no problem with it being added. So long as it is not at the expense of a sound single player experience.

However, I have seen too many games lately that have completely abandoned the single player experience and in the process the game flops. A good game will have both components and appeal to both types of gamer.

Not every game needs a single player campaign. In fact, many games have probably suffered because a single player mode was tacked in, taking away assets, man-hours and QC from multiplayer development. BF3 when it first came out was definitely a victim of this imo, for example. No one buys a game like BF3 for the single player.

BF3 is a first person shooter.

DW is a real-time strategy game.

they are somewhat different kind of games

I love multiplayer in the turn strategy games (both WEGO and IGO-UGO), but I always find very difficult to play Real-Time Strategy games in multiplayer.

I mean: I always play RTS with the pause button activated because I love to micro-manage and this is absolutely impossible to do for me in multiplayer.

for this reason for me in RTS single-player is much more important than multiplayer.

but of course this is only my personal opinion..

But who cares, he was giving a really good example.. if you want the games to be in the same genre, then what about Starcraft? Warcraft? Commmand and Conquer.. all realtime multiplayer games with STRONG SINGLEPLAYER AND MULTIPLAYER
