Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Japan. USA Entry Options.

Japan also chooses to align Siam. With Japan's DOW against the Western Allies and Japan Aligning Siam, options are enable and chits are flying everywhere. Not having a clue on how many chits should be kept in the Japanese entry pool and how many should be allowed to move the tension pool, the US player (that's me) "randomly" decides. The result is that the USA now has a 70% chance of successfully DOW'ing German if they so wish to try.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Japan. Combined.

Japan takes a combined and uses one of their two naval moves to directly transport a 3-4 cavalry corps into the open city of Haiphong which was directly being threaten by the Chinese Nationalist.

The use 1 of their 3 land moves to send an IJN marine division to take the CW city of Hong Kong.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Japan. Tarakan, Dutch East Indies.

Japan uses their second naval move to put an invasion task force into the South China sea consisting of a 6-3 IJN marine corps, 8-3 infantry army and a 2-4 infantry division. The 8-3 infantry army and 2-4 division land unopposed and capture the Dutch oil in Tarakan.

In retrospect, I should have only used the 2-4 division to invade as there were no notionals because of the surprise impulse. Live and learn. A "fuzzy" and "evolving" understanding of the rules for me is the direct result of learning this game through the computer and not through the paper rules of the cardboard and paper version.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Japan. Surprise Air Raid on Pearl Harbor. Results.

To say the least, Japan's surprise raid on the USN fleet based at Pearl Harbor produced disappointing and meager results.

Maybe I should have Japan's o-chit to take a super, but that may have produced one, or at most, two more sunk USN ships. Not worth it, in my opinion. Well, would have been only worth it if they had been USN carriers.

Why not invade somewhere on Java during the surprise? Taking Batavia is enough to make NEI surrender. And knocking out that territorial doesn't look all that tough considering all the shore bombardment Japan has available as soon as the weather improves.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Japan. Surprise Impulse. Bismark Sea.

Now we start the Japanese surprise carousel. In the Bismark Sea, the lone IJN cruiser fails to find the USN CP.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Japan. Surprise Impulse. Central Pacific.

No contact here either.

The USA had no business having 3 CPs at sea here. They needed, and should have had only 1 CP. The "other 2" were freed up last turn when the USA imposed the oil embargo. The USA player knew during the return to base that he had enough points to select that option and was going to select. Through a oversight on his part, really a tactical mistake, he just failed to return the 2 CPs in this sea are and three others that had been carrying the 2 oil points to Japan.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Japan. Surprise Impulse. Hawaiian Islands.

The the USA player needless put 3 extra CPs at risk. Fortunately for the US player, the Japanese are unable to find the US.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Japan. Surprise Impulse. The Solomons.

No contact. Thus ends Japan's surprise impulse. The managed to:

(1) Capture Hong Kong.

(2) Capture Tarakan and the oil resource there.

(3) Sink a USN heavy cruiser, 2 CPs and damage a battleship.

Not the most spectacular of surprise impulses.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Italy. Cape Verde Basin.

Italy takes a naval in order to reinforce the Italian Coast, East Med and send all their submarine units out to sea to seek CW convoys.

The Italians send 2 sub units to the Cape Verde Basin, commit their subs but are the ones surprised by an RN heavy cruiser.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Italy. Cape Verde Basin. Surface Combat. Round 1.

The two Italian submarine units in the Cape Verde Basin take a beating. This battle was a definite win for the RN.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Italy. East Coast.

An Italian sub unit is sent to the East Coast to meet up with a German u-boat unit left over from last turn. The Germans took a land so it's only the Italians who can and do initiate combat. No contact, neither side finds the other.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Italy. Cape St. Vincent.

Italian subs are also sent to Cape St. Vincent to meet up with German u-boat and initiate combat. Neither side finds the other so combat is "avoided".

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Italy. Italian Coast. RN Initiate Combat. Round 1.

However, the RN as the non-phasing player chooses to and successfully initiates combat. The result is that an Italian heavy cruiser is sunk.

Both sides choose to stay. The Italians because they have no choice.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Italy. Italian Coast. RN Initiate Combat. Round 2.

Round 2 is another victory for the RN. They manage to shoot down an Italian fighter unit and force an RM heavy cruiser and CP to abort. This leaves the Italians with a single unit, an air unit with air to sea factor(s), to keep supply flowing to the Italian army in Libya, Egypt and the Middle East.

Again both sides decide to stay and against the Italians, or I should say the Italian air unit, stays because they have to.

Fortunately for the Italians, combat ends as neither side found the other.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Italy. East Med. RN.

The RN does, however, successfully initiate a naval combat in the East Med.

The air to air portion of the battle results in a German Condor unit being splashed by RAF and RN fighter units.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Italy. East Med. RN. Naval Air Combat. Round 1.

The first found is one sided and, again goes to the RN. The RN manages to sink another Italian heavy cruiser and force an Italian battleship to abort.

Both sides stay.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Italy. East Med. RN. Naval Air Combat. Round 2.

Round 2 sees the RN finding and surprising the Italians. However, the air to air combat is bloodless. The Italians ended it after 1 round of air to air with no units lost or aborted.

Both sides stay, but neither finds the other so combat ends. Like the Italian Coast, supply through the East Med is maintained by a single air unit, the Italian NAV.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Germany. The Eastern Front. Ground Strike #1.

German takes a land and uses three of four of their air missions for two ground strikes against the Soviet stacks. The first which is on the exposed northern flank of the Soviet lines is opposed by Red fighter. Both bomber units still manage to get through, but are ineffective.

Turn 15. Jan/Feb 1941. Germany. The Eastern Front. Land Combat.

German decides to make only one land combat attack. That on the exposed Soviet northern flank. The Germans manage to get good odds on the Blitz table. This combat is opposed by the Red Air forces which sees their fighter unit shot down and their bomber unit turned away.

While the Luftwaffe does their job, the Wehrmacht doesn't. They roll a lousy 4!
