Turn 17. May/June 1942. Axis #9. German U-boats. Italian Subs. Cape St. Vincent. Round 1.

While all for axis sub units in the area pay the price for initiating combat with a superior force, these units before being forced to leave manage to damage a USN amphibious unit and sink two CW CPs.

It's not clear which side won and which side loss?

Turn 17. May/June 1942. Axis #9. Vichy. Italian Coast. Naval Combat. Round 2.

And the battle continues with an Italian heavy cruiser also getting damaged and forced to abort.

The battle ends after two rounds and when the smoke clears no Vichy naval units are left in the area. Italian naval commanders are left wondering what in the world just happened?

Undeterred by the results off the Italian Coast the Vichy naval force in the West Med successfully forces a naval battle with the RN. Vichy is looking for some payback!

Turn 17. May/June 1942. Axis #9. Vichy. West Med. Naval Battle. Round 1.

I'd have to call round 1 pretty much a draw.

Turn 17. May/June 1942. Axis #9. Vichy. West Med. Naval Battle. Round 2. Search.

Round 2 sees the Vichy naval task force surprising and isolating allied transports and their escorts. One transport still loaded with a corps.

Turn 17. May/June 1942. Axis #9. Vichy. West Med. Naval Battle. Round 2.

Vichy uses 6 of their surprise points to select and damage two allied transports. However, in return they see 3 of their 5 ships forced to abort with one of the aborted damaged.

So while this round was definitely bad for the allies it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Turn 17. May/June 1942. Axis #9. Vichy. Western Med. Italian Coast.

When the smoke clears from the two naval gun battles, the only evidence that the "mighty" Vichy navy ever ventured into the West Med and the Italian Coast are 1 CP at sea in both areas and 4 disorganized warships that managed to make port in Marseilles.

Turn 17. May/June 1942. Axis #9. Vichy. East Med.

In the East Med the Vichy naval commander after getting reports of their losses off the Italian Coast and defeat in the West Med elects not to try to initiate combat. However, the RN does try to initiate combat but is unsuccessful.

What a round of naval combat during a German naval ... phew ...

Turn 17. May/June 1942. Axis #9. Italy. Land Combat. Tripoli, Syria.

The Italians decide it's a good time to literally roll the dice on the CW beachhead at Tripoli, Syria. A successfully attack on the assault table requires a modified roll of 20 or greater since the CW has three land units in the target hex. Prior to the roll for the fractional odds the estimate chance of victory was 16.5%. After the Italians made the fractional odds (a 25% chance event) the odds for a successful attack increased to 21%. There was relief all around for the Western Allies when the Italians rolled a 6, which modified to an 11.

Ouch indeed.

Although it has happened to most of us.

Once, in a late impulse, I had my opponent drop one paratrooper behind my lines. It resulted in three overrun, and destroyed, aircraft. Not even the pilots were saved.
