Turn 18. July/August 1942. Axis #1. The Eastern Front. Hero of the Soviet Union.

Comrade Stalin awards Soviet fighter pilot Konstantin Krasavin the rank of Hero of the Soviet Union for his part in the air to air battle fought over the Zhukov salient. Krasavin was credited with personally shooting down 12 stuka dive bombers.

Does anyone know what Krasavin did at that dance in Tula?

Got me?

Turn 18. July/August 1942. Allied #2. Actions & Objectives.

Both the USSR and China take a land, CW and the USA a naval and Free France a combined.

The Western Allies (CW, USA and Free France) moves this impulse were driven by their objectives for this turn.

ETO Objectives:
1. Set and secure USA to USSR convoy routes for 4 BPs.
2. Replace 2 CPs lost at the end of last turn in the Bay of Biscay.
3. Secure allied convoy routes to Great Britain and Free France.
4. Gain total control of the Med (East, West and Italian Coast).
5. Conquer Algeria.
6. Establish and expand a beachhead on Sardinia.
PTO Objectives:
7. Secure advance bases from which Japanese convoys can be attacked.
8. Reinforce Malaya.

Soviet Objectives:
1. Keep Moscow.
2. Keep Rostov.
3. Keep Odessa.
4. Keep Pskov.
5. Turn the German flank northwest of Moscow.
6. Establish and maintain a 2 or 3 stack continuous defense line.

Nationalist Chinese Objective:
1. Don't lose any units.

communist Chinese Objectives:
1. Break the Japanese line or continue to force them to retreat.

Turn 18. July/Aug 1942. Allied #2. Western Allied Convoy Routes.

The Western allies managed to get their convoy routes working as they wanted. This includes getting the route for the shipment of 4 BPs from the USA to USSR set up. The route, which transverses four sea area, required 16 of the CPs that the CW and USA were holding in reserve. The result is that the Western Allies had at most a handful of CPs in reserve in the Atlantic to replace any losses due to axis submarine attacks. This is a scary proposition and a wakeup call for the USA and CW that they need to build more than the 2 CPs per turn, on average, that they've been building.

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. CW. East Med.

Very interesting developments in the Eastern Med. The CW force holding the isolated beachhead in Tripoli, Syria was pulled out and put to sea on landing craft in the Eastern Med. The landing at Tripoli, Syria can now be disclosed as a feint designed to draw the Italian ground troops into Syria. This feint was deemed 100% successful and the ground troops evacuated. Well, actually those CW ground troops are slated to land next allied impulse east of Tripoli, Libya and then take part in the attack to capture Tripoli, Libya the allied impulse following the next one.

I must say that this deception by the CW player was so good that it even fooled me who's playing all sides.

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. RN. East Med. No Init.

The RN showed great restraint by following my cardinal of not trying to initiate naval combat in a sea area with amphibious troops or critical troops on transport even when they have a much larger force.

For the Italians who are clear out number and out matched, they choose not to try to initiate naval combat either.

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. USN, RN. West Med.

In the Western Med the USN and RN decide not to try to initiate a naval combat even through there's only a Vichy CP present. The risk if they did would be from additional air that the Italians could bring in and, if lucky, sink, damage or abort one or more of the amphibious capable units whose target is Sardinia.

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. Allied #2. RN. Bay of Bengal.

Now turning to the Pacific, well at least moving towards the Pacific, the RN successfully finds and sinks a lone Vichy CP. This gives the RN uncontested control of the Bay of Bengal.

And why is that important?

Turn 18. Jul/Aug 1942. Allied #2. USN. Marianas.

In the Marianas the USN puts out an amphibious invasion task force supported by two carrier strike task forces. The target of the amphibious force are the islands of Chchijima Retto and the Bonin Islands which, if successful, will give the USA an air base that borders the China Sea and the Japanese Coast. Land based air from this base could be used to interdict Japanese convoys flowing through the China Sea.
