I think I would rail the factories out of Stalingrad and Saratov back into Siberia, just to be on the save side. That railroad is too close to the frontlines.
I've been holding off, I agree and the Soviets with start with Stalingrad.

Why is that GAR still in Sevastopol? I think the commanding officer of that unit is due for a transfer to the "Shockarmies". Move it upnorth. It has no use in the current position at all...
Agree.

You tend to make mistakes when you are rebasing the Soviet planes. You put them into cities on the frontlines and concentrate them after you've used them. That's a mistake when you are on the defense. It's better to have one FTR in a hex and to put them 2 hexes behind the frontlines if possible...

Thing is: large concentrations of disorganised planes are a very juicy target for Germany to attack. You are losing valuable planes and pilots this way...
Yes, I do have a tendency to bunch up my planes and keep them too close to the front when on the defensive. I need to take this lesson to heart.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. Actions.

It's rare that I take a naval with the Germans but with storms in the Arctic, rain in the North Temperate and the situation in the Med/Italy I though this was a good time to do so. My calculation was that the Germans could do more harm to the allies and more good for themselves with a naval than with a land given limited movement due to weather on the Eastern Front.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. Italian Subs. Cape St. Vincent.

Italians subs try to get things started off well for the axis off Cape St. Vincent but discovering the power of allied air FOR ASW. When the Italians decided to initiate a naval combat there were no allied air units in the sea area. The RAF added a fighter to the 0-box which would require to the Italians to win the surprise search, assuming they could/would isolated the 0-box, with at least 4 surprise points in order to force a submarine combat. And, the USN flew out a NAV to the 4-box which gives the allies a better chance at their search and the ability to keep the 0-box (i.e., where the CPs are) out of harm's way (i.e., combat). This strategy worked to perfection as an Italian sub unit did locate the allies but he NAV in the 4-box force a naval air battle damaging and aborting the Italian sub.

After this initial round of combat the Italians, left with one sub unit in the area, choose to remain but not to commit their subs.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. German U-boats. North Atlantic.

The North Atlantic was the area that the axis were hoping to do significant damage to allied convoys. An area that the Western Allies were especially concerned about. After the Germans decided to try to initiate a naval combat, the USA was able to fly a long range bomber unit located on the East Coast of Canada into the North Atlantic and into the 0-box with the allied convoys. With the North Atlantic "air gap" no closed this means that allied bombers on the US/Canadian East Coast or in Greenland/Iceland can now play a significant ASW role in the North Atlantic. It wasn't the USA long range bomber unit that made the difference but the RN heavy cruiser on ASW duty in the 4 box. This heavy cruiser was able to find and let allied CPs and their escorts avoid naval combat with German u-boats and Italian subs.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. German U-boats. USA/Canadian East Coast.

Of the East Coast of the USA and Canada a lone German u-boat unit decides to remain hidden and possible disrupt allied transport movement instead of trying to initiate combat against a superior force which could, and would, bring in air support.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. German U-boats. Arctic Ocean.

In the Arctic Ocean a German u-boat unit blows the lone CW CP out of the water with a search roll of 2 followed by a sure kill. While this is both a loss of 1 BP for the CW (i.e., cost of the CP) and 1 BP for the Soviets (Murmansk convoy route shut down) the allies are thankful that the Germans didn't get this search roll in the North Atlantic.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. Vichy, Surface Raider. Red Sea.

Vichy sends a surface raider into the Red Sea that finds and sinks the lone CW CP there. This gives Vichy uncontested control of the Red Sea.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. Italy. Vichy. East Med.

In the East Med both the Italians and Vichy send in naval and air units that reestablish supply to the Italian desert army. The axis choose not to try to initiate combat.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. RN. East Med.

However, the RN as the non-phasing player does try and successfully forces a naval air combat.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. RN. East Med. Round 1.

The combat ends after a single round with an Italian NAV unit splashed by RAF and RN fighters.

This round made apparent to the allies their lack of bomber units with air to sea capability. A capability that's required to attack Vichy surface ships. Both sides stayed and the allies added a RAF and USA bomber unit to the 3-box both with air to sea capability. However, both allied and the axis search rolls railed resulting in the end of naval combat in the East Med.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. Italy. Desert Army. East Med.

Not only is the Italian desert army again in supply but the Italians can use oil saved in North Africa for reograinzation of units in Italy and Sicily instead of having to use German oil.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. Italy. The Italian Coast.

A epic naval battle between the Axis (Italy and German) and the Western Allies (CW and USA) raged for 7 rounds this impulse. Luck, I would say, averaged out on average (if that makes sense). But, allied fighters in air to air combat couldn't hit the broad side of a barn but axis bombers who had numerous opportunities to damage or even sink loaded/unloaded allied amphibs and transports missed their targets. So both sides were both happy and unhappy with their luck.

Also, I'd say the axis inflicted a bit more damage than they took, however, this for the allies this is a war attrition which they will win by eventual "attrition" of the smaller axis force. As this naval battle raged it became apparent to the allies that they need to get Italy to surrender and get those dang Italian air units out of the war! Or at least out of the Italian Coast.

The USSR, as the non-phasing player, attempts but fails to initiate a naval combat against the German CP in operating in the Baltic Sea. The Germans did fly in a Finnish fighter to the 0-box when the Soviets attempted to initiate combat.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. Japan. The Solomons.

Now turning to the Pacific, Japan who took a combine elects not to try to initiate a naval combat in the Solomons. Since Japan didn't add any additional units to the sea area the USA wasn't given a chance to do so as the non-phasing player.

Turn 23. May/Jun 1943. Axis #3. Japan. ChiComm.

While things don't look all they great for Japan against the ChiComm, the upside is that Japan appears to be in nearly the exact situation that the were in a year or more ago. So Mao's reckless aggressiveness couple with Terachi's brilliant counterattack and exploitation of Mao's reckless seems to have bought the Japanese significant time in northern China.

Turn 23. May/June 1943. Allied #5. Actions.

The USA and CW debated weather or not to take combines or try lands to clear up Italy/Sicily. In the end the both decided to take navals in order to take better control of the Atlantic, Med and Pacific and to put troops at sea in order to get them closer to the action where they're needed.
