The Soviets through movement only were able to put a number of the German units in the south out of supply.

And the weather clears. Just what the doctor ordered for the Germans in the East, but not for the Japanese in the Pacific. What the axis are hoping for is that the Germans make good on the Eastern Front in this fine weather and that this turn ends before the allies get a chance for a go at the IJN in the South China Sea.

Germany takes a land and Italy and Japan pass in order to up the odds that the turn will end at the end of this impulse.

With the fine weather, Germany has big plans for the Eastern Front, which if successful could cripple the Soviet Union.

But first, Germany takes care of "some housekeeping" in Italy and the Balkans. The move more troops forward and now a semblance of a front with the Western Allies is beginning to take shape.

Germany seriously considers an assault to take Moscow but only if their ground strike on the defenders of the city is successful. The ground strike isn't so an assault on Moscow by the Wehrmacht this impulse is off the table.

The second attempted ground strike by the Luftwaffe is a miserable failure too. After it's fighter cover was stripped the Stuka dive bomber unit aborted.

The third and final ground strike is also a failure though it did result in the destruction of a Soviet fighter unit.

The first of four land combats by the Germans this impulse is preceded by an air to air battle between the Luftwaffe and the Soviet Air Force over ground support to the combat. The Soviets get just enough ground support through to turn a defeat into a retreat with all attackers disorganized and the loss of a German armor unit. It does help though that the Germans rolled a 6.

The second land combat is also proceeded by an air to air battle over ground support in which the Soviets manage to get 4 factors through. While the Wehrmacht wins the battle and shatters the defenders, the 4 factors of defensive ground support directly save two of the three units from destruction.

Land combats 3 and 4 were two very critical land combats. Land Combat 3, which was a Blitz attack, would achieve a breakthrough on a roll of 8 or higher (79% chance) and result in the capture of an unoccupied Stalingrad. Amazingly, the Soviets hold with all attackers disorganized. Most importantly, Stalingrad is saved though not by the Soviet High Command who put Stalingrad in such danger but by the savage fighting of Soviet infantrymen.

Note that the Soviets were able to provide 1 factor in defensive ground support to this combat. I'm not sure whether or not that 1 factor tipped the scales of the battle or not.

The Soviets also provide defensive air support to the fourth and final land combat. If successful, this attack would open up supply to the trapped German army near Stavropol. The attack fails but just barely. If the Germans had rolled 2 higher (i.e., a 12 instead of a 10) then the attack would have succeeded.

Wow, when it comes to rolls for the initiative or end of turn, the axis have had incredible luck this game. As a counterweight, their weather and land combat rolls have been somewhat lacking though.

The Germans would like to move first next turn giving them two impulses in a row (again) this game. The allies do not want that. The allies have +1 modifier and win ties. They will most definitely request a re-roll if the axis win the first roll. If the allies do, I don't believe the axis get a chance to request one because of the +1 modifier in favor of the allies.

Status: offline 		The Axis are incredibly lucky that the turn ended. If it hadn't end, Kesselring would have been lost and the whole southern German Army in shambles. Also, the Rumanian CAV would have been overrun and von Rundstedt would become out of supply due to the Soviet movement and the destruction of Kesselring...

That's the goal of the Russians if they move first next turn. Whatever the weather: attack Kesselring. He is alone in the hex and if the weather is snow, use the winterized unit to get rid of him. If he gets killed in the hex, Von Rundstedt is in grave danger to be put out of supply too.

What are the Allied plans considering the Italians? You only need to take Albania, Eritrea and Italian Somaliland to get an unconditional surrender of the Italians, so you should aim to do so, since that it's the end of all Italian land and air units in the game...

A certain corporal in Berlin decided it was time to attack a place called Stalingrad and to try to get the oil fields under control. That corporal also wanted Moscow to be taken. In between: there is nothing.

And on a note for RKR, why do you use such a precious unit as an ENG as anti-partisan?
And the attack for Moscow is about to turn in another disaster, since the Soviets seems to be going to crush Armeegruppe South, there are lots of Germans who are trying to encircle Moscow which won't be able to retreat and that's another truckload of BPs lost.

Status: offline 		Agreed. Germany should start thinking about defense and not about offense anymore in the USSR. Winter is coming and with the Allies in the Alps, there won't be any reinforcements for the Ostfront. Every unit lost in the east is a unit which won't be replaced anymore. I see the USSR back in Poland in about a year time (if the Germans can hold out that long...).

The Luftwaffe got greedy. The Soviets rolled first in the air to air combat which produced an abort and choice for the Germans. The Germans chose their fighter unit in the hope that their roll would abort or shoot down the Soviet fighter and both bombers would get through. The calculation after the first round for the Germans when that didn't happen was that this was an all or nothing chance at taking Moscow which may never come again.

If I were the German player playing against a human opponent then I would not have nearly been this aggressive in the East. Rightly or wrongly I'm playing each major power as I estimate that they would have fought given their leaders and the current situation. I must admit I'm having a blast. In southern Russia I can feel the history of Stalingrad and the destruction of Army Group South play out in this game in a way that I never understood reading or watching about it. I can't remember exactly but the Germans have had at least three good to high odds attacks that would have given them Stalingrad. Honestly, I though it was gone when the Germans got fine weather and made this last attack that would have given them Stalingrad. I could hear Hitler boasting that Stalingrad was theirs only to be thrown in a fit of rage when the assault failed. I can see the German generals in the East pleading with Hitler to let them fall back even though that means giving up the chance to conquered Stalingrad and Moscow.

Now I'm not going to throw away Germany's army in the East but as long as they have a modest to fair chance to capture Moscow and Stalingrad, Germany will keep at it. It's only when there's no longer any chance is left and the Eastern Front is in danger of collapse will the Germans be allowed to pull back. From reading these recent post though, it appears that that time is now or maybe even past. Wow, it is fun "living history" through playing MWiF!

I really hate partisans. One of my many weakness and one which any human player could certainly exploit is that I tend to devote too many units for garrisons and anti-partisan duties. I need to find a healthy balance between garrisons and frontline troop levels but I just don't even want partisans appearing.
