Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Allied #5. USA. MTO. Land Combat.

The US and CW thought that they were going to be able to clear out the German holdouts in the mountains of southern Italy this turn. However, no when a 3 is rolled.

The pressure by the Allies on the Germans is increasing and increasing. It won't take long for the Allied forces in Italy to break out into France and with those two partisans in Toulouse and Lyons there is no way Germany can't prevent that from happening. As soon as the Allies have cleared the Alps there, the way to Paris is open.

And the pressure in the East is mounting rapidly too. Losses are high on the Axis side. It won't take long for the front to start desintegrating. Just keep up the pressure. Any long range TB-3 bombers on the way out of the Soviet factories? Those are so good to have coming summer, especially if you have the Para available too...

i was just thinking it is time GE start adopting the early RU defensive lines of 2-3 unit stacls alternate hexes in a straight line and try to stay back from RU air so you can free units for the west as that italy yugo line looks like its going to get quite long as well as possible needs in France...

The only Soviet bomber in the build queue is a DB-3F, which will be ready on May/Jun. Next turn, they have two fighter units (Pe-3 twin engine and a MIG-3).

Yes, I'm afraid you're right. This means retreating a bit and you know how the Fuhrer feels about that. But, I'm confident that his generals (Manstein, Guderian, Rommel to name a few) on the Eastern Front will be able to convince him. Oh, it was less than a year ago when the mighty German army stood at the gates of Moscow (well, technically they're still at the gates), Stalingrad and the rich oil fields of the Caucuses.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #8. Germany. The Eastern Front.

All senior German generals on the Eastern Front signed a letter to Hitler "begging" him to allow them to move the German lines to more long term defensible positions consistent to the unfolding needs and threats in the West, specifically in Italy and the Balkans.

The answer was an unequivocal no retreats, except for localized "shifts" to straighten or fill gaps in lines.

Guderian was ordered back to the Wolf's Liar in Eastern Poland to explain all this.

So, Mr. Hitler gets murdered (a certain Baron von Stauffenberg is credited for the attack) and his generals have taken over command of the country. However, the Allies still want an unconditional surrender...

I believe mr. Cfinch is right with his remark. Germany should slowly start retreating westwards in the USSR. Nothing fancy (and don't leave any stragglers behind)...

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #8. Germany. MTO.

After to listening Hitler rant for the better part of an hour and, at times during that hour, being the direct recipient of that rant, Guderian was informed by Hitler that he would be taking command of all German forces in the MTO.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #8. Germany. Western Front, France.

Model, the commander just relieved by Guderian was order to northwest France, just outside of Brest, to take command of the situation in France to include the defense against any possible allied invasion and support to German u-boats docked at Brest.

I know and if I were playing this as a "game" against another human opponent I'd do that. Now I don't want to do anything really really crazy or stupid (note the really really part), I'm trying to "simulate" based on how I understand the axis and allied leaders of the time would "play" it.

While, this may lead my axis down the path to total ruin, it's a blast playing this way. However, please keep all strategy and tactics tips coming because I've learning so much and have learned so much in this AAR alone. And who knows, maybe there will be a time when Hitler's or Tojo's Generals out and out disobey their orders for the good of the Military.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #8. Japan. ChiComm. Land Combat. Kaifeng, China.

Seeing Mao once again overextending his ChiComm forces, Terauchi launches a successful counter attack that retakes the city of Kaifeng.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #8. Japan. ChiComm.

With Mao's army disorganized, Terauchi's forces can just march in and take an undefended Chengchow (assuming the turn lasts that long).

Southwest of Chengchow, a Japanese MIL retakes the city of Nanyang.

Once again, Mao's lack of military understanding and ability results in a major setback for the ChiComm forces.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1944. Axis #8. End of Turn.

The turn ends on a roll of 2 against a 20% chance of ending. This saves Chengchow, for now, from the Terauchi.

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1943. Axis #3. USN. China Sea. Fleet Retreat.

Those ships that still had any combat effectiveness retreat to Singapore. The two US carriers that didn't, because all their planes had been shot down, were moved to Pearl. These two carriers next turn will return to the US West Coast to get their air wing replacements.

If the CVPs are available for next turn, and if the US is doing a supercombined at some point during the turn, a better maneuver is for the carriers to move to the West Coast sea area, and have the planes fly out to meet them. Then during the return to base step they can get most of the way across the Pacific. This will get them back in action one turn faster.
