For Germany it's quite mandatory to attack the Allies where they've the 2 bulges in the mountains.
Germany wants to shorten their frontline to free units (for 1 hex pratically they are to "cover" 4 different hexes). That's a major objective for them to free up assets needed elsewhere on the front.

In Russia they need to start to fall back in good order now that they can - to a shorter defensive line; and as suggested above, by doing that they do not need anymore a "straight" line but can defend via ZoC til they get to the new defensive line. To stay that forward neats them 2 resources (Assuming they fall back around the Denpr line) which they'd lose, a measly cost in comparison to the units that they'd lose.
And if Germany fails to fall back, they'll lack the units to defend a line at the Vistula or so later on.
It's German time to trade space for time.

I do not suggest you play by "Hitler's command", have you played with Stalin's stand fast orders? Probably not. But besides that, meanwhile it can have its Roleplaying influence and fun, it does not "train" you to play the game as it should be played. Which means once you get against a player which plays the game in a regular form (not talking of gamey-forms allowed by rules) you get rather steamrolled.

Also bear in mind this game - by how it's tailored - brings you nowhere by defending only. Germany is still in a place where they can do attacks (remember to bring always the appropriate sacrificial lambs, divisions or MILs) and they should take shot of opportunity when the enemy offers that.

Also, more fighters for Germany.
Especially as they can deploy and kick into action in Vienna and Munich.
There are also some excellent FTR2 which can act as bombers, still costing 2. (Or Stukas eventually) And they can return to base after missions elsewhere.
You should not send more planes (safe dire needs) to East Front for now.

Agreed.

And I don't think Mao made a mistake here. The Axis just lost a unit. The Chicomm only temporarily lost their INF. In this stage of the game, I would be prepared to go for a 1 on 1 loss ratio with the Chinese.

The reason is simple: the Japanese can't replace lost units fast enough to China, because they are getting hammered upon in a lot of places...

Turn 27. Jan/Feb 1943. Axis #3. USN. China Sea. Fleet Retreat.

Those ships that still had any combat effectiveness retreat to Singapore. The two US carriers that didn't, because all their planes had been shot down, were moved to Pearl. These two carriers next turn will return to the US West Coast to get their air wing replacements.

If the CVPs are available for next turn, and if the US is doing a supercombined at some point during the turn, a better maneuver is for the carriers to move to the West Coast sea area, and have the planes fly out to meet them. Then during the return to base step they can get most of the way across the Pacific. This will get them back in action one turn faster.
Great tip! Thanks. I usually try to do this during a naval, but I guess the advantage of a supercombined is that the 2 air moves required won't eat into the 3 air moves of a naval.

there has barely been any cold weather this game. also i recall you posted stats at some point of battles for ge , like 99 at that time, and said there were X risky ones. from what i recall 99% of those ended up high teens or 23. incredible axis luck this game!

You still aren't building Chinese aircraft or ART. Those should be the Chinese highest priority.

Axis should go first, use their new planes already in good weather to "fix" the Allies at the mountain passes in Germany and begin to maneuver (backward and in good order) in Sovietland.
Also probably they need to evaluate to setup a defence around Turin or just in the French border with Italy (given the Allies will probably just land in S.France to get around it).

Agreed. You don't need boots on the floor, but artillery and planes in the skies. Guns first, planes second. Boots on the floor: not interesting. The Chinese have the advantage in numbers already, but they can only use those numbers against disorganised Japanese, because they have weak combat factors...

The Soviets should also be building ART and more bombers. Those ARM and MECH are nice, but bombers and the Stalin Organs are very, very good units to use in the coming offensive...

Turn 28. Mar/Apr 1944. Axis #1. Japan. ChiComm.

Japan uses their 3 land moves in a combine to retake an empty Chenechow and link up the the 5-2 MIL in Nanyang. Terauchi, one again, is being held as a hero in Japan for, one again, pushing Mao and his ChiComm forces back.

Turn 28. Mar/Apr 1944. Axis #1. Japan. Naval Move. South China Sea.

Japan's motivation for the combine was to capture an empty Chenechow and to send its fleet carriers into the South China Sea in hopes of replicating their great naval victory over the USN in the China Sea. A crippling blow by the IJN in the South China Sea against the partial force the USN left at sea last turn in the South China Sea could set the USA back a year in their war against Japan. At least that was Tojo's thinking.

Unfortunately for Tojo, the IJN was unable to located the USN fleet currently at sea and now will have to face a potential reprisal by the entire USN Pacific fleet.

Turn 28. Mar/Apr 1944. Axis #1. Japan. Bay of Bengal.

The IJN fail to make contact here too. It appears that the Japanese squandered the naval portion of their combine.

Turn 28. Mar/Apr 1944. Axis #1. Germany. Western Front. Land Combat. Austria.

The German land combat to retake one of the two mountain passes into Germany/Austria held by the allies was thwarted by significant allied defensive ground support and, primarily, by a low combat roll.

Turn 28. Mar/Apr 1944. Axis #1. Germany. Eastern Front. South.

The Germans pulled back in the south to better defensive positions. However, it was during land combat that Germany's high command was made aware of the opportunity missed for a high odds blitz counterattack on the Soviet armor stack disorganized (show in the previous post). Hitler was furious at his generals for giving ground and for not exploiting effective ground strikes by Goering's Luftwaffe. Goering was unhappy too.
