So here they're running to the enemy to get away from the enemy...

Running the Gauntlet

Near Kijev, October 16, 1941: In the fast-moving German offensive
in Fall 1941, huge pockets of Russian infantry were often cut-off by
relatively small German forces somewhat supported by armor. In one
such pocket west of Kijev, a division discovered a weak point in the
German ring and decided to make a run for it. Since the German armor
will be arriving shortly after the breakout has started, the Russians
would have precisely little time to get out.

Game length: 10.5 turns

For the Russians to win they must break out of the pocket
For the Germans to win they must prevent the Russians from escaping

Russians: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's
Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG's, LMG's

Board: #4

Aftermath: After initially slowing the Russians down, the German forces
practically collapsed when their leaders were overrun by the overwhelming
Russian numbers, despite brave last stands by German machinegunners in
the process. Arriving armor quickly put an end to further such attempts,
and very few of the Russians remaining in the pocket escaped the closure.

I just want to say, a great thank you to all the scenario makers past, present and future.
I can't think of any other wargame, ever, that has this many distinct scenarios, not even all the versions of TOAW would come close.

Magpius could be because there's a pent-up passion
for ASL that has existed since the late '70s that
continues to this day. No other wargame I know of
can boast over 40 years of play besides chess.

Here's a simple scenario that I have been able to
beat in two turns yet surprisingly often lost.

MLR5 Third Time Lucky

St. Martin-de-Fontenay, August 1, 1944: On the evening of July 31st,
Major Jacques (Jimmy) Dextraz was preparing to go to Bayeux with two
other officers for dinner and a little wine. Before leaving, he heard
that there was to be a Brigade 'O' Group to discuss yet another attack
on the church in St. Martin. A night assault on July 28th and 29th by
two companies of Le Regiment de Maisonneuve had failed as had a second
attempt, which was supported by artillery and Typhoons. The church held
a commanding position on the outskirts of St. Martin and gave the Germans
ample view of the Canadian rear areas. While listening to the opinions of
officers at the 'O' Group, Dextraze spoke up repeatedly suggesting how the
attack should be done. After presenting one idea too many, Major Dextraze's
D Company of Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal was given the job of taking the church.
Dinner and wine would have to wait. Perhaps this third crack at the Germans
ensconced in the church would succeed.

Major Dextroze was convinced that a swift, carefully coordinated attack
combined with a thorough briefing of his men and reconnaissance of the
area was key to success. Dextraze explained the plan to every section leader
and every man knew his roll in the upcoming assault.

Game Length: 6 turns

For the French Canadians to win they must capture the church
For the Germans to win they must defend the church

French Canadians: Squads, LMG's, PIAT's
Germans: Squads, MMG, LMG's

Boards: #43, #46

Aftermath: At 0530 hrs on the morning of August 1st the attack commenced,
preceded by a preparatory artillery attack on the church. Several rounds fell
short and un-nerved a number of Dextraze's men. The Major calmly walked across
the road through enemy fire and stood by the church graveyard wall. His men
soon joined their commander. Bren teams took out German machinegun positions
then the Fusiliers came charging through the wall of the church graveyard. Pouring
small arms fire and grenades into the church, the French Canadians soon cleared
the building of Germans. The SS troops were quick to put in a counterattack.
Securing the objective using the numerous slit trenches around the church and
and an adjoining orchard, the Fusiliers gunned down the first German attack as
well as a stronger one.

As the morning wore on, the Germans, realizing that they had lost the church,
subjected the area to intense mortar fire for the next 36 hours. Dextraze
careful planning had paid off. For his courage and leadership in the assault,
Major Jacques Dextraze was awarded the Distinguished Service Order along with
a new nickname from his fellow officers, "Mad" Jimmy.

Rock Of Resistance

Outside Rethem Station, Germany 1945-04-11 .
The attack of the 2nd Monmouthshires on Rethem was supported by an artillery firing plan
-- codenamed 'Hatton' -- and consisting of a creeping barrage that would move in front of the
attack, down the railway line. A smoke screen would wrap it all up, to blind German Ops and direct
fire weapons. The artillery would be preceded by Typhoons. B and D Companies of the Monmouthshires
were to move forward in a two-pronged attack from the south-west, to have C Company move through. It
soon became apparent that the intense preparation had left heavy weapons unscathed -- the unmistakable
report of railway Flak and PaK 40 ant-tank fire soon rang out. . .

Attacker: British (B & D Companies, 2nd Battallion, Monmouthshire Regiment / B Squadron, 5th Battallion, Royal Tank Regiment)
Defender: German (Kompanie 1, Marine Grenadier Regiment / Flak Regiment 125)

Best played on British SIDE first / with LOS: 26 Hexes / with RULE: Frack of Flak / with MOD: Yours / etc.

Scenario Length: 9.5 Game Turns
Victory objective: The side with the required Victory Points is the winner. Both sides gets VPs for owning VP Objectives.

Rico, always good to hear from you.

Here's another bridgehead scenario as the Allies closes in on Germany...

The Filstrof Bridge

Filstrof, France, November 19, 1944: As part of the assault on Metz, the
10th Armored Division was ordered to execute a flank attack around the
north side of the fortified area. Racing east past Thionville (and through
the "back door" of the Maginot Line) the division turned south to complete
the encirclement of Metz. The next objective became Bouzonville, across the
Nied River. Finding the bridges there blown, Task Force Chamberlain found
one intact at Filsrof, to the west of Bouzonville, and promptly attacked.

Game Length: 6.5 turns

For the Americans to win they must secure the bridgehead by capturing stone buildings
on the hills (5 or more).
For the Germans to win they must prevent the Americans from establishing a bridgehead.

Americans: Squads, HMG's, MMG's, BAZ44's, mtr's, AFV's
Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG's, PSK's, AFV

Boards: #40, #41

Aftermath: With recon elements in the lead, the task force quickly brushed
aside a weak infantry screen north of the river. The bridge itself was taken
easily but once across the river, the American troops crashed into more Germans
in better positions. Losing 36 men in the face of a German counterattack, the
Americans wouldn't secure the bridgehead until later that day when the rest of
Task Force Chamberlain arrived.

Question and observation.

What is the scenarios marked as DC1-DC4 from?

I think the scenario set in January 1939 with the Russians and Finns is either a typo s/b 1940) or it’s a hypothetical scenario.

As far as I know the Winter War started in November 1939.

Well, I've only uploaded DC1-The Mace and DC3-Last Stand at Marchelepot.
DC2-Red Monsters I wasn't sure I could do but now that I look at it I
can see possibilities but DC4-Satan's Fire is a scenario between the
US Marines versus Japanese which I can't do. I don't know anymore
about the origins of those scenarios if that's what you are asking.
However, the scenario sheets do have the ASL logo and there's the
subtitle "ASL Scenario DC1". It appears to me to be official ASL scenarios.

As for the scenario "Winter Wolves" you must be right. I just wrote
verbatim from the sheet. It does say "Jan 7, 1939" which must be
wrong as you pointed out. The other mistake was mine in thinking the
Winter War proceeded WWII so I didn't think anything of it. I'll
correct that.

Thanks, so you don't know which scenario/module or pack these came from?

I am not 100% familiar with any called DC1-4.

I do own quite a bit of ASL material, hence my inquiry.

Let me look in the archive...

Nothing, I can't find any reference to any of these DC scenarios.

Zovs, I've attached the scenario sheets of DC1-DC4 for your
evaluation. Rico was so insightful to have figured out what
DC stood for. It was staring me in the face and I missed it.
Good catch Rico!

Thanks Hailstone, I have never seen these, wonder where they originated from (I have about 90% of all ASL materials, these 4 have not seen any publications over the last 20 years!).

I am still an active ASL player, do you have any more scenarios like this?

Thanks!

Hey all,

I've decided to catalogue *nearly* all the scenarios and CG's that have been posted herein as well as the originals included in the games. This spreadsheet differs from Paullus' list at the front in that I've listed the numbers of (half-)squads, AFV's, Ordinance, OBA, Reinforcements and game turns involved and then created a complexity/difficulty of play rating from those stats. I have no doubt there'll be debate about the colour-coding and ratings I gave, but consider it more of a guide than gospel! I've also included the LOS for each one, since that has such a bearing at the moment on playability. Both tabs (scenarios and CG's) are filtered, so that one can re-sort the list by complexity, name, designer, etc., etc., and yes, I made separate tabs for actual scenarios v's CG's. Turns out there are actually 16 CG's out there, not just the official 5 in the games!

So why *nearly* all? In some cases there are numerous iterations or versions of the same, but I have kept the same multiple versions of the scenario when there were different designers. To the right of each worksheet list is the colour-coding used. It's the same for both scenarios and CG's. Again, one may disagree, but since I built it, I got to define it !

Also, you'll see where the AI was listed as preferred for a particular side, plus the couple of scenarios that are only playable as one side (ie. one side is locked to the AI). Plus, where you see a '(P)', that means pre-setup; ie. all of that side's units are already setup as opposed to your being able to setup yourself.

Finally I've posted it as a Dropbox link, since the Hailstone manufacturing plant in particular continues to produce, and I'll do my best to update accordingly!

NB: I have changed some of the original scenario names, particularly if the designer's name was in it, since I have made a separate column for that instead, the same for TotH numbers for the same reason. So if you can't, initially find the title, either do a word search or look for the first word of the actual scenario title.

Ok, so turns out a Dropbox addendum is necessary:
It's not xferring certain Excel functions such as frozen columns and rows, nor the sorting/filtering that is such a key feature
If you want the fully functioning spreadsheet, particularly so that you can sort/filter by complexity, you'll need to download the file. Then it will have all the features.
Also, the numbering system for complexity is a sum of the cell colours to the left of that column (ie. not incl. the LOS), and the colours are defined as:
- Green = 0
- Yellow = 1
- Light red = 2
- Dark red = 3
- Black w/red digits = 4

In general, I found that if the complexity rating gets into double digits, you're getting into longer playing times (ie. more than one sitting) and/or the game may struggle to manage.

Again it's worth repeating - rmmwilg went above and beyond the
call of duty.

Now here's a scenario more to my liking...

State farm 41

Near Osipovitchi, Russia, July 9, 1941: German Army Group Center has conquered a
bridge across the Berezina River, of Napoleon's fame. Pressing the attack deeper
into Russian territory along the Moscow Highway, the leading Panzer formations
had left numbers of Russian units behind and isolated. These included fully
defended strong points with tank support available. One such group operating from
the Osipovitchi area has caused heavy German administrative losses along the Minsk-
Bobruysk Highway. KampfGruppe Heilman is assigned the mission of destroying the
Russian combat troops in, and around State farm 41.

Game Length: 9.5 turns

For the Germans to win they must capture the farm
For the Russians to win they must defend the farm

Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, ATR's, FT, DC's, AFV's
Russians: Squads, HMG, MMG's, LMG's, ATR's, MTR, AT Gun, AFV's

Boards: #19, #33

"Warning: This scenario has been designed following the data given by Wargamer's Digest,
February 1984. These seem fairly historical and detailed but we haven't been able to
find the original source report of the firefight."

Now here's a scenario I hesitated to post because I think
it's kinda lame but if you are adventurous it's a small
scenario with few units and it has been done before...

The Bridge at Ramelle

France, June 1944: There's no prelude or aftermath. I guess he figured
we saw the movie.

Game Length: 4.5 turns

For the Germans to win they must capture the bridge
For the Americans to win they must retain control of the bridge

Germans: Squads, Half-Squads, PSK, AFV's, AA Gun
Americans: Squads, Half-Squads, MMG's, BAZ44's, DC's

Board: #23

Yeh, I just added the first column for the names, but the top row was already frozen. That's irritating, if Dropbox isn't importing that feature

I'm going to check the link...

...OK, so that makes me peeved! No, it's not xferring the frozen columns or rows, nor the filtering that is such a key feature

I've been busy with a trip to the mountains and photoshopping about a 1000 pics from that excursion. At least for a while, there won't be as many scenarios posted as in the past.

Here's one where the Dutch try to retake an airfield recently captured by the Germans early in the war.

Retaking Ypenburg Airfield

Ypenburg Airfield, Holland, May 10, 1940: After repelling the German probes on
the southern edge of The Hague, a counterattack to retake the airfield was organized.
The initial assault by two companies of the Grenadier Guards Battalion and a company
and a half of recruits from the 4th Depot Battalion was pinned down in open ground by
heavy machinegun fire and Luftwaffe strafing. Just when it looked as if the attack
would fail, an accurate barrage of 75mm fire from the 2nd Battalion of 2nd Artillery
Regiment began to fall. Heartened, the troops rose and once again advanced towards
the field which was covered with still-smoldering wreckage of JU-52's destroyed in
the morning attack.

Game length: 6.5 turns

For the Dutch to win they must capture the airfield and surrounding buildings
For the Germans to win they must hold the captured airfield

Dutch: Squads, MMG's, LMG's, AC, OBA
Germans: Squads, HMG, MMG, LMG's, ATR, mtr's

Boards: #14, #43

Aftermath: The bombardment forced the Germans to abandon their machinegun positions
in the control tower and set several hangers on fire. The Dutch pushed forward
aggressively and the defenders began to waiver. Pushed out of the airfield's buildings,
the survivors continued to resist amid the wreckage and bomb craters on the field.
Captain Bottger, commander of the 3rd Company of grenadiers, inspired his men by walking
about upright calmly giving orders while smoking a cigar until killed near the end of
the battle. At the end of the day, practically all the German paratroopers and airlanding
troops that landed around Ypenburg Airfield were killed or captured.
