Sometimes I want them to retreat to a certain place.

That will be the new withdrawal order we will have in Southern Storm in order to set defensive orders and allow triggered pull backs to predetermined locations.

I'd like to also see the stands retreat?

Examining the AI they charge forward as if possessed by suicidal robots with no fear and irrespective of the number of casualties incurred by their Battalion/Regiment.

It would be good to see the AI, or human controlled units, falter in the attack when they take losses, Fall Back and if things get really bad actually turn and run.

I've never seen that yet.

So I setup a test scenario of an M1IP Tank Co defending against an AI T-80 Tank Rgt with a VP location behind the M1s. The T-80s charged forward completely ignoring losses and barely engaging the M1s. The M1s were eventually all taken out but only after the T-80s had lost 97% of their force, all without faltering or retreating.

From looking at WW2 losses and unit effectiveness a WW2 Infantry Bn was deemed combat ineffective after suffering 33% losses, taken out of the line and taking days, if not weeks to recover. Even suffering 10% casualties had a major impact on the Bns effectiveness.

I just don't see the losses on a 'formation', be that Bn or Rgt, being modelled here.

It would be really good if it were.

Bry, I know what you mean regarding that. There are areas that the tactical AI needs improving. It takes time and hopefully the 2.1 engine can improve on things such as this. Time will tell. However, there is hope. I am currently testing the latest build playing a scenario as the Soviets. I had an entire armor battalion attaching a NATO position with an attached mech company. The Soviets started taking serious losses and then canceled the attack and withdrew. So there is hope. I have not seen that action that obvious before. I was quite impressed and then I noticed your comments so I thought I would share.

Just a word of warning, you will still see kamikaze units. But several times I have noticed units pulling back after taking losses in the current build. I am not sure why, but it was good to see.
