Tonight at 11:00 PM Easter Time on History International Channel they are going to tell the story of the U.S.S. Liberty and the cowerdly attack by Israeli forces in 67. If you don't know about the incident it should be a real eye-opener of how we are sometimes treated by our "allies".

I read the accounts of the USS Liberty attack in the book '6 Days of War', and it seemed to me like it was a sincere accident. Israel apologized for the incident and made reparations, if I recall correctly.

I don't know who wrote the book you read but you should read the book written by one of the survivors of the Liberty. The Israeli torpedo boats straffed our lifeboats after the launched their torpedoes into the Liberty.

Yeah, the apologized... within minutes of realizing that the liberty's destress call had gotten through in between their jamming (They had to turn off the jamming each time their jets wanted to launch missiles at the Liberty). They also came up with FOUR different excuses.

What they didn't know at the time, and noone found out about until many years later, was that the US had a spyplane flying far overhead that recorded the pilots' conversations which proved that they knew it was an American ship before they attacked. One ofthe pilots who refused to fire got sentenced to 20 years in prison afterward.

Even worse than the attack was the coverup afterward. To this day it is still the only major navel incident that has never been investigated by congress.

Strange how it's always worse when you are on the receiving end, but just an honest mistake when you're the one donating.

Reminds of of the USS Panay incident, where Japanese planes attacked a US gunboat in China sometime in the '30s.

I recall in the book I read that the pilots of the Israeli fighters were not sure until they had already commenced attacking that it wasn't an Egyptian ship. They were aware of an existing threat of Egyptian missile boats attacking the coastal cities (like Tel Aviv) and had reason to believe some of those Egyptian ships had left port and were somewhere cruising towards Israel.
I'm not trying to make excuses for the Israelis here, clearly they messed up but I really dont think it was maliciousness on their part. Also, the USS Liberty was a listening ship spying on Israel so it might have been their way of telling the US to back off. Similar to when we 'accidently' bombed the Chinese embassy in Serbia when the Chinese were making a fuss about our involvement there.
Also keep in mind the context, the 6 Day war was an extremely confusing war for both sides, very fluid situations and the threat of Israeli extinction hung in the balance. If you are in this kind of war and you spot what could be an enemy ship moving towards your coast, and it could be carrying WMD or any number of threats, you tend to shoot first and ask questions later.
