A columnist in today's Post-Dispatch printed a letter he wrote to Jeff Bezos. In it he used the following construction: "The data support that. I read somewhere where data are important to you."

So I sent the columnist this email:

Geoff,

Small quibble. If we're in Star Trek and we're referring to a robot and its evil twin, you would probably be more accurate to say, "Data and his brother Lore are going to the movies today." Only one of them could accurately be described as 'Data'. Lore is significantly more malevolent and is, by no means, synonymous his goody-two-shoes Starfleet younger brother. Slightly larger quibble: neither of them are robots, but are considered 'androids'.

C'mon man-check your facts before writing angry letters to the editor!

Now, to take this gentlemanly exchange of bizarritude off the rails, I offer this 'fact'. Jean Luc Picard was by far the best Captain in the Star Trek franchises.

And what data do you base that statement on?

The second one would agree with my assessment.
