It used to be a favourite trick of used car lots to jack up the drive wheels off the ground and run the car in reverse for a long time to unwind the odometer. Can't be done with the newer odometers, but there may be some computer hack that can change the odometer reading. Crooks are endlessly inventive!

When I was 18 I ran the hardware department of a WT Grants department store. Whenever cheap power drills went on sale , local car dealers would race in to clean me out. I'm not sure how they were used to reset odometers, but......

They would hook them up to the odometer cable and run the drill in the desired direction.
