Wasn't there a tennis player whose world ranking soared after getting her (ahem) reduced?

Depending on which (ahem) reduction you mean, it might have been Rene Richards.

I may be wrong, but wasn't he/she going in the other direction?

Enough tennis. Calling on Chickenboy!

I’m peeved about another pharma commercial. To the sound of maudlin violins groaning a band of arsonists is releasing a barrage of floating paper lanterns and watches them in rapture floating away. What are they trying to do? Did they just get off a Japanese submarine in the Pacific Northwest? Is there anywhere in the US where this activity is legal? The narcissistic irresponsibility!

It's legal in a lot of places. IMHO, people that do it are definitely in need of serious pharmaceuticals

What? Gender 'reassignment' or releasing floating luminarias?

Saw this at a festival in Bangkok. The lantern floats only as long as the fuel source is burning. The paper bag never gets hot enough to ignite (unless you have collisions like in the picture). When the fuel burns out (15-20 minutes) the bag floats gently to earth.

Doing this near airports is not a good plan ...

I saw this once when I visited the Kingdom of Corona. The releasing of the lanterns was an annual event organised by the King and Queen, held on the birthday of the 'Lost Princess', who was kidnapped as a baby.

I was actually at the last event as shortly after, the princess was found safe and well and they all lived happily ever after.

I've seen the lanterns around here. Only a few times though.

Aerial fireworks are legal here too. For July 4th and New Years you can buy full blown mortars at fireworks stands. They are really loud, you can feel the whoomp when they go off.

They have done this a few times here in Colorado. Last time just north of Boulder the wind came up & scattered them all over, starting several brush fires

Unfortunately, the wind was wrong. Boulder wasn't touched

I too have visited the Kingdom of Corona. I had halcyon days and warm nights on the sandy beaches there. I found my own. I met other travelers to that Kingdom whose good humors I also imbibed. My twin buddies Dos Equis and the triplets Tres Equis, dog-boy Chihuahua, the warmth of Sol and latin flavors of Tecate.

I will visit Corona again soon. Of this I am certain.

Growing up in the parched climate of California and its perpetual cycle of mudslide/flood-wildfire-mudslide/flood-wildfire has trained me to avoid anything flaming by the side of road or-certainly-in the air that might start a blaze. Perhaps in moss-covered environs of Portland Oregon it's still not perceived as a threat to life and limb. I see it as a bad idea set aloft.

I remember 3 kinds of fire season forecasts from Southern California.

• Less rain than usual, vegetation is dry. Fire Danger: EXTREME!
• More rain than usual, more vegetation growth than usual. Fire Danger: EXTREME!
• Average rain. Fire Danger: EXTREME!
