I'm pondering that at the moment. If I'm going to do it its now - while there is more chance of bad weather. Could be a massive mistake though. Please don't do the rail moves until I've had a chance to sleep on it.

It could be a minor mistake but certainly not a massive one.

And if Germany DOWs in winter I say it is a good thing for us even with Soviet forces out of position. Even better if we get the DOW. And if Germany doesn't DOW and we can't then we could decide if we still will stack the border of move back to defensive position.

All in all a minor risk but lots to gain.

So it is something to ponder on. And to sleep on.

I think I will get stuck on the naval step anyway.

Okay, so looking forward into 1942, I am not going to be able to get the Soviets into the war anytime soon - unless we can start diverting German units from the Eastern Front - and of course that means the US coming into the war.

I will stuff the border - and if as expected - he doesn't take the bait I will leave them there until the summer. If, by then, he has aircraft there I will then move back until the autumn (so that by Jan/Feb 1943 all are in position at the border) - if not then I will take the chance and leave them.

I need in the early turns of the year to focus on longer term builds which, combined with more infantry later, should see a declaration possible.

Focus will be on HQ, ARM, MECH, MOT, PARA, FTR, Long range LND and NAV.

So rough 1942 build (assuming no German declaration of war and no disaster on Far Eastern Front):
1. HQ INF (6) LND (4) PIL (2) ENG DIV (3) INF DIV (2) = 17
2. HQ ARM (8) ARM (6) ATR (3) = 17
3. MECH (5) PARA (5) INF DIV (2) FTR (2) PIL (2) = 16
4. MOT (4) PARA DIV (3) PIL x 2 (4) NAV (2) LND (3) = 16
5. MOT (4) PIL x 3 (6) FTR x 2 (4) LND (3) = 17
6. ART (5) PIL x 4 (8) FTR x 2 (4) = 17

Obviously if they do declare war then that kind of goes out of the window

I am pretty sure they will DOW this summer, at the latest.

Therefore I think the build program should be changed to reflect this.

1) USSR gearing goes up in 1942. A lot.

2) I think prio should be FTR2, cheap land units, AA, AT, ART, and HQs.

3) I think almost all FTR2, and then almost all LND2 should be in production before switching to ATR and LND3.

I think the game is turning into...it is...itz...a Sitzkrieg! Accchhhh, sssss, put extra coffee on.

All I know is, perhaps the lure of holding Minsk and Kiev for a while, hoping to avoid a crushing Russian blitz into a neutral Rumania, and being able to destroy a lot of Russian black print units before the total mass of the Red Army grows too large might divert the Axis from turtle mode. Or might not.

As far as which toys to pick from the catalog, particularly without the Guards Banner Armies available, what the Russians need most is the pieces with red anti-tank factors. Not many of those around in 1942 though.

You might very well be right about a German sitz approaching. Both Germany and Italy, if my memory serves, recently begun fortifying their positions. (One fort hexside produced by each)

Partisan takes Taiyuan

I am sure that you know but I want to clarify anyway that partisan does not take hexes. Taiyuan will remain Japanese controlled even with a partisan in the hex.

No the LND4 is priority. If I can't get Germany into the war then it can be used in the Far East to keep Japanese fighters busy.

I didn't realise gearing goes up. I'll have a look at this.

The charts say gearing rises from 0.5 to 0.75 and then there is a note about a conditional +0.25 subject to conditions. Is that cumulative i.e. multiple of 1.00 if those conditions are met?

Yes. And so long as you are at peace with Germany, the condition will be met.

Coolio....

That's very handy:

HQ ARM (8) LND (4) FTR (2) Pil x 2 (4) INF (3) ART (6) INF DIV (2)
HQ INF (6) MECH (5) ATR (3) FTR (2) Pil x 2 (4) PARA (5) AT (5)

Obviously dependent on gearing and a few other items. But that's not even the full allowance in the first turn .

Yes. And so long as you are at peace with Germany, the condition will be met.

And if the condition isn't met, the Germans will have a unit inside Russia, giving you +0.25. Thus no matter what, you will have a multiplier of at least 1.0. If the Germans attack you inside Russia, your multiplier will be at least 1.25. And while you hold Kiev and the German are attacking inside Russia, you will be at 1.5. (I assume that Minsk will be lost quickly.)

CW and US moves for the remainder of the impulse.

Rebase:

CW rebase the FTR3 in London to hex 51, 24 in Devon.
The Whitley bomber transfer from Morocco to Bilbao.
The South African Hurricane is debarked to hex 109, 105 in Travancore, subcontinent of India.

The bomber in New York is rebased to Newark.

Reorganization.

Alexander reorganize the Spitfire in Plymouth and the heavy bomber East of London.
