At Koumac, the second day of fight was the last for allied ground forces: more than 2000 mens captured.

No major actions on sea to report.

In Burma, Mandalay, the 2 IJA battalions were under air attack - which started the previous day.
66 Blenheim and 23 Hudson, protected by some Hurricane, dropped their bombs over japanese troops, which suffered some losses in the open field. 3 A6M2 and 3 Ki-27 only were patrolling in this area. 1 Ki-27 was destroyed for 1 Blenheim and 1 Hudson.
IJA decided to air-lift one more battalion in central Burma.

Burma, Mandalay, another morning attack of Blenheim and Hudson squadrons. Only 1 Hurricane on CAP shot down by japanese fighters. Several losses on IJA troops.

Wake naval bombardment: 3 CA (Chicago, Chester and Northampton) + 3 DD fired on the island. High number of japanese casualties (700), explained by the fact that they were attacking... IJN troops, completely disrupted, suffered also 640 other casualties during the attack.
Fortunately, allied troops didn't counter-attack. They would have probably pushed to sea the remaining forces.

Noumea naval battle
A IJN cruiser fleet made of CA Myoko, Haguro and Nachi and 4 DD arrived close to the harbor few hour before the appearance of an ennemy fleet: 2CA (Houston and Canberra) and 1 DD.
Despite having T crossed by allied fleet, CA Myoko and DD Kuroshio managed to set fire on CA Canberra, which was sunk while trying to escape by all other japanese ships.

Near Suva, I-18 sank PC Caroo. This sub was located in the area in support of midgets operations in Fiji.

Strategic status:

DEI:
# Palembang and Balikpapan landings in preparation
# Java landings not scheduled before April 42

Phillipines:
# 14th Army is fighting against US troops at Clark field. This Army could be available in one or two months for operations either in Java or Australia

Papua - New Guinea:
# Port Moresby has been captured. 16th Army is now preparing for landings in Australia.

South Pacific:
# Fiji invasion has been abandoned. New Caledonia was captured as fall back position.

Central Pacific:
# Wake is still not captured.

Aleutians:
# Amchitka island has been captured. It seems that it has triggered an important reaction

Tuvalu archipelago naval battle
A small IJN amphibious task force (2 TB + 2xAK) was sailing to Vaitupu when it was intercepted by a 4 battleships and 3 DD !
All japanese ship were sunk...

Over Rangoon, RAF deserted the sky. Ki-21 have had an opportunity to damage airfields and to destroy one Buffalo on ground.

Air attack near Batavia: 15 G4M1 flying at sea level attacked 2 CL Marblehead and Java. The second cruiser received one torpedo. Allied air cover (30 fighters !) was probably surprised and didn't do anything.

Ground combat at Singapore: 25th Army was still opposed to 54000 britsh troops. The assault ended at the end of the day with 2100 casualties for IJA and 831 for the besieged.

Allied sub attack near Tandloengselor: xAK Gokoku Maru received one torpedo.

Over Batavia, 18 Reisen in sweep mission were opposed to 11 Buffalo, 10 B-339D, 5 CW-21B and 4 75A-7 Hawk. One zero didn't come back but 1 Buffalo and 1 B-339D were claimed.

Over Rangoon, british fighters came back and their pilots were apparently motivated. 32 P-40, 24 Hurricane, 10 Buffalo and 12 H81-A3 fell on 6 Ki-27 and 29 Ki-43 flying at 9000 feet. 9 japanese fighters went to the mat for one H81-A3.
Even worse, 43 Ki-21 screened by 30 Ki-43 endured the law of ennemy: 19 bombers and 2 ki-43 were shot down as if on parade.
19 A6M2 arrived a little bit later to destroy 5 ennemy fighters (but 2 reisen lost).

At Soerabaja, the dutch base was left unguarded by fighters. So 9 G4M1 attacked several HDML and sank 2 of them.

In China, Kukong was captured by elements of 23rd Army.

Wake: continuation of CVL action - another airfield attack this day with 30 B5N1 surrounded by 13 A6M2 and ... 8 A5M4 ! 1 of the 2 F4F-3 in CAP destroyed for 1 B5N1.
Ground units, galvanized by this performance, launched an attack, which was repelled - now with some difficulties - by US troops.

Central Burma, several waves of allied bombers performed ground attacks on Mandalay: in total 71 bombers (Hudson and Blenheim) with sevral Hurricane protecting them. Only 3 A6M2 and 4 Ki-43 were around but were outnumbered: 2 A6M2 and 3 Ki-43 destroyed. The 2 battalions there suferred several losses.

At Palembang, 55th Infantry Regiment - completely landed - tried to reduce its disruption before assault...

Noumea under allied bombs
It started during night with a naval bombardment: 2 CA, 4 CL and 2 DD did some damage to port, airfield and H6K4 based there.
This was followed by 26 B-17 during morning. 8 A6M2 and 9 F1M2 have probably damaged one of them.
This ended by air attack from ennemy carriers in the afternoon. More than 150 SBD screened by 80 fighters sank AMc Tsuneshima Maru and the precious LSD Shinshu Maru. PB Nagata Maru and xAK Kamikaze Maru also anchored in port, were damaged. 3 F1M2 were in CAP at this moment. Largely outnumbered, 2 of them were destroyed.

Vanuatu battle
KB - covering NE approach of New Caledonia - discovered an ennemy (amphibious ?) task force with made by 4 xAK and 2 AVD. All of them were sunk by 54 torpedo bombers and 44 dive bombers...

Allied sub attack near Bismark archipelago: AK Sagami Maru, carrying troops, was torpedoed (and sunk) by an ennemy submarine.

Renewed fighter over Pegu. 23 A6M2 met 8 Hurricane there. 1 planes was lost on each side.

Wake: fourth day of air ground attack, even though carriers would have need some resupplying.

Central Burma - Mandalay: I. and III. /143rd Infantry Battalions, reinforced by the 1st paratroop Raiding Regiment, attack the city. Defenders should be expelled from there in 1 or 2 days

Borneo - Samarinda: 2 battalions have crossed the river Mahakam and captured the city, pushing the dutch to the mountains.

Night Naval bombardment of Amchitka Island: BB Idaho and 4 DD fired on troops located there, which suffered because of big shells.

In reaction to Mandalay capture, british bombers attacked IJA ground units. 16 Blenheim and 12 Hudson were initially engaged. With 2 A6M2 and 3 Ki-43 on CAP, only 1 Blenheim was destroyed. A second wave of 32 Blenheim followed and then a third one with 16 other Blenheim and a fourth one with 23 other bombers. Almost 350 casualties were counted for the high experienced ground units... Only 2 reisen were in CAP. They claimed 1 Blenheim. These bombardments greatly disturbed ground operations.

B-17 attack of Noumea: 1 H6K4 was destroyed - some more damage to the installations.

Nagumo didn't try to intercept retreating ennemy carriers because of lack of torpedo. However, KB discovered another amphibious task fore near Belep island. B5N2 carrying bombs, hit (and sank ?) APD Edsall, xAP Stagen, xAP Van Neck, xAP Van Outhoorn, xAP Van Rees and xAP Speelman.

Over Palembang: several waves of 139WH-3 tried to hit CL Jintsu located there but missed their target.

Allied sub action
Vanuatu: AMC Aikoku Maru, sailing alone, received one torpedo.

Japanese sub action
Western Australian approaches: I-30 met an ennemy ship (xAP Colac) and succeeded damaging this passanger ship.

Mandalay, Burma: 41 Ki-43 sweeping the area, met 4 Hurricane. 1 Ki-43 lost for 2 Hurricane... Following the fighters, 24 G3M2 did some significant damage on the airfield.

Celebes, Makassar: 9 G3M2 performed ground support in order to complete the city capture., which was done during the afternoon.

New waves of B-17 over Noumea: 2 A6M2 destroyed but still few damages on airfield.

Palembang: ground support on each side. 18 139WH-3 for dutch and 39 Ki-21 for japanese. Much more effective for IJA bombers: 300 ennemy troops out of combat for 21 on japanese side. Following that support, the IJA 55th IR launched its attack, which did also 300 casualties on ennemy side, for only 77.

Clark field combats: roughly 33000 defenders were still holding the area. With almost same number of troops, an assault was launched but didn't succeed. 1100 casualties for allied against 1600 for IJA.

At same time, Singapore fortress was attacked. 55000 mens were opposed on each side. Here also the assault was stopped. 1300 casualties for british against 3000 for IJA.

Australia campaign has begun !

As New Guinea campaign was completed much ealier than expected, 15th Army was ordered to seize North Coast of Australia.
2 infantry regiments landed at Cairns that day.
1 Naval Guard unit landed at Normanton.

Australian western approaches: AMC Kinryu Maru met an isolated transport xAP Corio. 10 shell hits were claimed on this ship, left on fire.

Java, Soerabaja: 18 G4M1 attacked the airfield and destroyed one 139WH-3 on the ground. Dutch command seems to keep all fighters at Batavia.
Later during the day, 27 other G4M1 attacked port facilities and placed at least a bomb on 2 docked submarine and on AS Canopus.
