Each bunch of LW airgroups has some type of leader element with about only 4 planes, Do these make a difference, I want to disband them to make life more simple.

Have played vs. AI w/wo them; no observable effect. Note that the 4AC unit is useful for introducing latest AC that appear in small numbers, FWIW.

Every single group is IMHO important, because you need as large air force as possible. Pre-1.08.09 these could be dedicated to night mode to offer some very small intercept capability at night. However the first point is still valid.

tiny ag's take up space in the window for manual select air units, only big ag's means more planes?

Sure, there are some drawbacks. But most important is to have as much planes as possible.
