Is it really necessary to lock an entire useful thread over the antics of a single troll? There was a great discussion going on that seemed to be of importance to more than a few people that visit the site. Such a shame as I was glad the thread was revisited and thought it still very relevant.

I'm sorry, but when users continue to attack each other in spite of warnings I had to locked the thread.
I don't enjoy locking threads, but when they became nasty, I really tend to.
Anyway I've escalated the issue.

At least it's better than Twitter's attitude to trolling. You may be aware that the journalist who first reported the delay to No Man's Sky was sent a death threat for doing so. He reported it to Twitter and got the reply that said death threat is "currently not violating the twitter rules"!

We close threads that are off track or no longer serving a useful purpose or turning nasty. We do it rarely and we do it for the good of the community. This is how we keep this a pleasant place to visit. If you want to go somewhere without any moderation try the steam forums :)

We also ban people who step over the line and will continue to do so!

It's sad, but it's just a thread.

I find the obsession with multi multi quoting in more annoying than silly comments.

I never understood how people could "fight" on the internets. It's ridiculous and... pointless

Isn't that true for just about all fighting?

In the real world (as opposed to the cyber space) some -if not most- fights are indeed ridiculous and should be avoided. But sometimes you must fight, put some personages in their place Been there, done that... and proud of it

Appreciate the reply VPaulus. A shame that the offending posts couldn't be deleted like the post that was deleted from bairdlander in the Is Matrix dying? thread instead of having the whole discussion tossed. Then again, locking it is far more time efficient.

Who said anything about wanting to be somewhere without any moderation? I know I didn't and I don't believe you are so obtuse as to think so. Maybe you are? :)

Why not just lock out offending people from the thread rather than lock the entire thread?

Surely it's not that difficult.

I am quite surprised the individual has not been,at the very least, temporarily suspended from this forum.I am sure he will continue with the false statements and insults of others who do not agree with his views.Trolls never stop and always return, possibly with a different account/username.

I don't know. But it seems a fair solution. One warning to the transgressor(s) and then if it continues lock them out and leave the discussion going for the others.

There isn't a way to do that and even if there was it tends to be too far gone to save so we'll stick to our current policy :)

Better to star the discussion again without the incident.
