One hot summer night in 1964 I listened to the first Cassius Clay Sonny Liston fight on the radio of a 1962 Studebaker Lark. I had never heard of him before but before long (with help from Howard Cossell), I learned he was the gold medal winner of the 1960 Olympics and the media tore him up for being as "outspoken" as he was.
Later that year he changed his name to Mohammad Ali and became a controversial figure for the next decade.
Mr Ali showed his strength in and out of the ring and was truly an ambassador for this nation.

Rest In Peace,Sir.

Rest in peace, Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. a.k.a. Muhammad Ali. You hadn't fought professionally for thirty-five years, but I still remember your catchphrase "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee."

One of those personalities capable of transcending the confines of their own sport. Few are capable of this; Muhammed Ali was one of the few. RIP

What he did, politically, and where/when he did it, more than his fighting abilities in the ring, IMHO define him as a true brave man.

RIP, indeed.

The only good thing I have to say is at least he honored our laws and stood ready to pay the price for refusing the draft.

I remember two sports figures from my youth being god like; Roberto Clemente and Cassius Clay...wow how times have changed. When your heroes have died, you know you are growing old...

"Float like a butterfly sting like a bee – his hands can’t hit what his eyes can’t see.”

"I’m so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and got into bed before the room was dark.”

"I ain’t got no quarrel with them Vietcong”

"I am America. I am the part you won’t recognise. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky, my name not yours. My religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.”

And my favorite -

"A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.”
