Yeah, we were lucky. Croatia didn't deserve to loose. A tie would be fair, IMO.

Hi all,

Well...we did it !!

Portugal played better today than previous matches, as a team. But Croatia massacred us in the last half of overtime...
We got lucky, not something we are used too...

Congrats!

The unfortunate thing is that we (Croatia) lost because of the totally inept coach appointed by "people" (I will not use the more appropriate words - this is family forum after all) who are masters of the Croatian Football Federation...

He was lucky in first 3 matches (he changed players starting in 89th minute in all 3 games ) but his luck run out in 4th and crucial game... players are not to be blamed here...

Croatia has amazing players , the only relatively weak spot is the defence. We (Portugal) weren't just lucky, I think we managed to neutralize very effectively Croatia amazing mid-field and attack most of the game (as consequence yes, first half was boring).

One of the reasons is that our coach finally decided to bring to the pitch 3 midfielders that play together in the best club of the world (Sporting Club de Portugal ) - Adrien, William, João Mário - specially Adrien, he managed to neutralize Modric, a very difficult task.

The entry of Renato Sanches was very effective to give more power in the second half and overtime. This kid (18 years old ? ) is a force of nature. If Bayern manages to coach and train effectively this still "rough" diamond he has the potential in a few years to be one of the best players around.

Regards and better luck next time!

I guess the coach had a few words with Ronaldo. I only saw the first half, but he was a completely different player, one more (exceptional obviously) man in the team.

And I should stick to the plan! My prediction (the kicktipp thing) was that Portugal would make it to semi-finals

As for the negative football, Portugal must use the best style suited to the players they have. So far it's working so fair enough.

Belgium !

I didn't see the other games, and only caught the last 20 minutes of Hungary-Belgium, but...what power and skill ! What talent! Impressive show, IMHO they are a top candidate for winning this championship, if they keep playing like this...

Meanwhile Chile wins the Copa America over Argentina 0-0 (4-2). Both teams lose a man ejected in the first half and play 10 on 10 for the rest of the way. In the shootout Messi kicks first for Argentina after the first Chile kick is blocked by the keeper. Messi misses over the crossbar. Chile goes on to make its next four. USA reached the semifinals, a good showing for the USA, but Argentina completely outclassed USA in the semi final game.

I have been enjoying watching both the European Championship and the Copa America on US TV. Not many years ago these games would not have been on US TV.

I think we have to be a bit cautious as, let's face it, Hungary are really not very good. That said, after a false dawn in the World Cup and a slow start here, could Belgium now be beginning to show what we believe this group of players is capable of?

Bad news for Wales if so.....

And another bit of Copa America news. Messi says he is retiring from international competition after missing his penalty kick in the finals yesterday. http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/36637591

I acknowledge that Mr M has produced some results in the teams he managed. I also acknowledge that he is skilled. And I do not wish, at this point, to resurrect that old debate. That can wait for the next Premier League season.

I merely tried to say that defensive football has been dominating in the Euros.

I thought it was a rather weak performance by Spain. And they played to predictable. Italy was a worthy winner.

To bad that Germany versus Italy is already in the quarter. That should, at least, been a semi.

I've heard from England that congratulations are in order. Apparently there is no need to play the match and England has already begun preparing for the next match.

Or has Swedish media exaggerated the English confidence?

You'd really have to be a legendary troll to bet (our kicktipp thing) Iceland was going to prevail tonight... and yet Franciscus and Pesk Pesk trolled us

Amazing Iceland. A tsunami of vitriol is about to engulf England fans though. And Hodgson!

The 3 weakest at England imo;
1. Roy Hodgson. Ok, I get it, he has a crush on Rooney, but that sub should have been done atleast 15mins earlier.
2. Rooney. Another match where he plays weakly despite his penalty goal.
3. Joe Hart. Sorry Joe, but that second goal for Iceland is on you (also Walker, but mainly Hart).

Stunning !! Amazing !!!

Well, at least I am no longer so sad we managed to tie our game with Iceland...

I indeed bet on Iceland on our Kicktipp, but more as a desperate play than anything else (although Iceland is NOT a weak team this championship). But the only chance to beat th1207 is to play crazy...

I noticed that. You had bet, understandably -not rationally-, that Scandinavian teams Sweden and Iceland would win past matches. And that cost you points Tonight you pulled back and poof... surprise!

1. It doesn't matter what he does, leave Rooney out and he gets slaughtered in the press. Play him and he's awful.
2. Still. Not. A. Midfielder. Or even good. (see also: Henderson, Jordan)
3. So that's 4 goals conceeded and he was at fault for 3 of them. Outstanding. It was the usual England thing, score first get all smug. They're never going to score from a throw in, it's only Iceland and...oh, bugger.

It's like I said at work, England are the Skegness of international football. You know they're going to be ****, but still they find new and exciting ways to be ****ter than expected. This will obviously be lost on most of you as you've probably never visited Lincolnshire's premier seaside resort
I'm not surprised at all to be fair, Portugal couldn't beat Iceland.

Well sometimes in football you get the luck. You manage to qualify from your group, but although you don't finish top, you still get a lucky, easy draw in the first knockout round. I get Iceland got lucky....

I confess that my betting on Sweden was because I decided to try and stay positive despite I had some lingering doubts.

But my betting on Iceland was not emotional. Rather it was a belief that Iceland has a strong defence and play as a team. The results Iceland had during the qualification proves that. And I also been counting on that the other teams would be underestimating Iceland. And I didn't select draws since Iceland, somehow, very often manages to score a goal. Iceland doesn't attack often but when they do it is amazing how much they do right.

----

I made the opposite to Franciscus. I bet on England to guard my position on kicktipp.
