This scenario is a fictional engagement between the Australian Commonwealth, US, Malaysian Forces and a fast moving Indonesian Coup.

The coup has arrayed two prongs you will to blunt, one, an outgoing invasion fleet and two, a bustling Naval Base supporting the invasion of a neighbor island. They are not mutually exclusive problems, both need to be destroyed. In addition, various other disconnected issues will need to be dealt with, from minesweeping to area defense.

I wanted to create an adaptation of Mark Gellis' Air War of Indonesia, which I loved from the moment I hit the start button. I took his idea and expanded it to include various other problems an allied force would face when dealing with remote and long distance target such as Indonesia. You will really need to look at how you coordinate fueling assets and how those assets interplay with your strike forces.

The first briefing is below, a letter from the Prime Minister of Australia to you outlining the problem and possible solutions.

GOOD MORNING AND MERRY CHRISTMAS AIR MARSHALL TAYLOR,

DESPITE OUR BEST DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS AND ECONOMIC ASSISTANCE, INDONESIA HAS DESCENDED INTO COMPLETE NATIONAL CHAOS.

THE INDONESIAN JAVA FRONT (IJF), OR "KELOMPOK ENAM", AS THEY LIKE TO BE REFERRED TO, IS A MILITANT MUSLIM WING OF SENIOR JAVANESE OFFICERS. AS OF NOON YESTERDAY, THIS GROUP HAS TAKEN CONTROL OF THE ENTIRE ISLAND OF INDONESIA JAVA.

WITH THE CRUMBLING INDONESIAN ECONOMY, THE IJF HAVE ENJOYED ALMOST COMPLETE POPULAR SUPPORT FROM JAKARTA, SURABAYA, CILACAP AND HASIM. WITH THIS SUPPORT, THE IJF HAVE GAINED THE LOYALTY OF MOST MILITARY AND ITS SUPPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE ON THE ISLAND OF JAVA, INCLUDING THE SURABAYA NAVAL BASE.

THE REMAINING INDONESIAN TRIBAL AND ETHNIC GOVERNING BODIES HAVE ALL BUT ACQUIESCED TO THIS COUP AND HAVE ASKED FOR REGIONAL CALM WHILE A NEW GOVERNING BODY IS CREATED VIA THE IJF IN JAKARTA. THE "KELOMPOK ENAM" HAVE ANNOUNCED ON RADIO AND TELEVISION TO "UNITE" THE COUNTRY ALONG ITS THEOCRATIC AND ETHNIC VISION.

WE BELIEVE THE IJF WILL NOT STOP WITH JUST JAVA AND OUR AMERICAN FRIENDS CONCUR. KH-11 IMPROVED CRYSTAL PASSES INDICATE INTENSE PREPARATIONS AT SURABAYA NAVAL BASE TO MOVE ON THE MORE RESOURCE RICH SUMATRA AND KALIMANTAN LAND MASSES. WE HAVE COUNTED AT LEAST 4 FAST PATROL BOATS ALONG WITH AT LEAST ONE SUBMARINE, THREE FRIGATES, AND VARIOUS LANDING ASSETS.

ALARMINGLY, THE KH-11 SPOTTED SEVERAL EMPTY 3000 TEU INDONESIAN CONTAINER SHIPS IN AND AROUND THE SUNDA AND LOMBOK STRAITS (FIGURE 1) LAYING, WHAT WE BELIEVE ARE VINTAGE SOVIET FLOATING NAVAL MINES. WE BELIEVE THE IJF ARE TRYING TO HIDE THE MINE-LAYING VIA ITS COMMERCIAL VESSEL FLEET. IT SHOULD BE NOTED, WE DO NOT HAVE DEFINITIVE INTELLIGENCE INDICATING THAT THE IJF HAS INDEED MINED THE SUNDA AND LOMBOK STRAITS; HOWEVER, IF TRUE, IT PUTS THE WORLDS COMMERCIAL CONTAINER SHIP TRAFFIC IN QUITE A PREDICAMENT, AND MINE SWEEPING ACTIVITIES MUST BE EXPEDITED.

THIS ABOVE TACTIC ONLY MAKES SENSE IF THE INTENT OF THE IJF IS TO CUT OFF AUSTRALIAN/ALLIED (SAAF) INTERVENTION IN ITS FUTURE PLANS. OBVIOUSLY THIS WILL PUSH OUR AIR AND SEA CAPABILITIES TO THEIR MAX.

AMERICAN POLICY MAKERS ARE AS CONCERNED ABOUT THE IJF INTENTIONS AS THE AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT. PHILIPPINE CABINET MINISTERS HAVE OK'ED PLANS TO MOVE AMERICAN ASSETS INTO A LESS USED AND CLANDESTINE AIRBASE IN SOUTHERN LUZON. THERE IS A PERSISTENT AND UNSUBSTANTIATED RUMOR, VIA RADIO CHATTER, THAT CHRISTMAS ISLAND IS A POTENTIAL TARGET FOR THE IJF. AGAIN, THIS ONLY MAKES SENSE IF THERE AIM IS TO DISABLE SAAF INTERVENTION. HOWEVER, WE HAVE PULLED OUT OF STORAGE AN OLD AN/TPS-43 AND IT'S ONLINE, IT WILL GIVE US SOME WARNING OF ANY ATTACKS BEFORE THE ARRIVING HMAS STUART. BUT CHRISTMAS ISLAND IS A SMALL OUTPOST AND IS COMPLETELY UNDEFENDED AT THIS TIME.

- removed all US F-111's

Before I jump in, just a few points

Maybe don't make all the IJF radars visible at start? I took the ROE given to me as I could fire right away, so I popped all the radars with Tomahawks from the DDG group. I also sent about 30 at the naval base, and actually ended the scenario because I got a ton of points from demolishing the base.

Just started playing this. Looks great, I think I've found a new favourite. Now I have to split my time between this scenario and Hearts of Iron IV

The only thing I am missing is a submarine element; the RAN had the Oberon class diesel boats Otama and Onslow as well as the new Collins class boats Collins and Farncomb at this point in time, and they were used quite extensively for ISR around Indonesia during peace and the 1999 INTERFET mission. I suppose a USN nuclear attack boat would be assigned to the area too, but it might be too 'overpowered' for the Indonesian forces to go up against.

Thanks Man... Yea, I toyed with that piece and decided against it.. At first I had one RAN sub then decided against it.

Anyway, please let me know how you do when you're done, I've fixed the press the easy button tomahawk issue and made it what I think is rather fun to play.

7 hours in and having a blast, thanks!

Only issue I've seen so far is that the IJF keeps shooting down civilian AC--17 so far--which triggers a message I've seen 17 times now. No biggie, but it slows down gameplay for me.

Fixed!! Thanks man.. won't display a continual message and fixed the no-nav zone to limit the A/C entering. Also, made sure postures were set correctly for IJF and Civilian A/C

Hey man. Got your message. All the tanker support is US based, and chopped to the Australians. The Aussies did have some indigenous tanker support, but it was limited.

Results: Major Victory - 510 points (Scenario auto-ended after I scored 510 points though I will continue to play until time runs out)

Very polished and awesome scenario. The mission briefing is very well written providing an excellent overview of the situation and clear objectives. First task was to use my Recon assets to look for the enemy task force and targets at Surabaya. The faster RF-111s reached Java before the U-2 and used the terrain to locate SA-5 targets and the SA-15s! The recon assets were used also lure fighters into the air for the fighter sweeps. Easy pickings with the SAAF & US AF having sparrows whereas the Indonesians only had Aim-9s... except for few occasional surprises.

Things I like about the scenario:

-Having to recon to find targets. No radars and stationary targets already in place and ready to be Tomahawked.
-Great messages and events (especially the homage to Mark Gellis)
-Long distances between airbases and the targets requiring good coordination between support assets, fighters, and strikers.
-Civilian traffic.
-Like the idea of having Christmas Island as an alternate airbase. Also the dilemma to defend it or leave it to its fate. I chose latter as I didn't want to spread my resources on too broad of a front.

Thing I did not like:
-Scoring may be a bit too generous. I only sank 6 ships and didn't even touch Surabaya yet I had a major victory. Maybe the damage to Christmas Island should be a bigger points penalty. It'll make the decision to defend or leave it alone much tougher.
-SA-5 ammo seemed bit low. All 3 SA-5 sites that were detected fired only 26 missiles total. I assume they ran dry. I was hoping to use my SEAD assets to neutralize the SAM sites but the SAM sites shot of all their missiles at max range without doing any damage.

Suggestions:
-The naval element seems to be irrelevant. Both the northern and southern task force were too far away to have any impact on the scenario. The Northern TF had few Tomahawks but that was it. All the damage was done with air power. Maybe have the TF closer to Java at the start of the scenario. Neither task force had any chance of engaging the enemy TF NE of Surabaya.
-Concentrate the Indonesian fighter assets closer together instead of having them all over Java. The fighters were too spread out and it wasn't a challenge to divide & conquer creating 2:1 to 4:1 matchups.

Just taking a look at this one. It's in my favorite era and the scope is along my liking.

A couple very preliminary comments, :

-small point but two of the Helo's have the same name: The SH-70 on HMAS Success and the SH-60 on USS Ramage are both named 'Golf #1' (that's the problem with using the games auto name function)

Based on some research I did for Northern Fury, there are some USAF airframe issues:

-The last F-111F's were already retired in 96 and the Spark-Varks in May of 98: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Dynamics_F-111_Aardvark#F-111F. Replaced by F-15E's
-It is unlikely, not impossible, that you would have any Air National Guard F-16s using the F-16 ADF in this situation for several reasons:
--By 98 many of the F-16 ADFs had been swapped out for Blk 30 & 40's in the ANG
--The ADF was purpose built for NORAD
--The USAF Reserve only flies Blk 30/32 F-16s, although they may have had Blk 25 in 98. Not sure, never CJs or ADFs.
--PACAF had the better part of 3 Wings of F-16 (one in Japan (2 Sqn), one in Korea (2 Sqn), another in Korea with 1 Sqn paired with A-10s, and a Sqn in Alaska)

There was one F-15E Sqn in PACAF, based in Alaska. 90th FS has since switched to F-22 but they were F-15E in 98 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/90th_Fighter_Squadron

Yea, the F-111 dates I'm aware of.. I decided to throw them in for commonality with the Australians.. as for the F-16's, I can switch out for the proper ones, I wanted one for High cover and the other for SEAD support.. and the Helo's, thanks for the name issue.

well i am starting this.... the only thing that really sticks out in an unusual way... is the fact that i cant find any fixed wing long endurance patrol/asw aircraft... which seems unusually improbable given the national forces involved.. the mission.. and the vast environment...

Sadly, that's part of the mission, to force the player to move helo assets into the Java sea. I could add some P-3's to Australia, I'll see what this does to gameplay.

ok, based on magi's feedback, I decided to add some P-3's to the game.. I just worry that the Harpoon loadouts on them will make mincemeat of the invasion SAG, but it seems to be not the case.. anyway, I've updated it to version 16.

thank you sir.... i added a few in my game play....
how does the weather effect recon.... im just at the point of getting them in the AO..... i can go lo and fast with the f111 but im concerned im wasting my mission with the U2... ive not used them much before....

managing the space time sortie tempo is the hardest part... and waiting for sead/dead strike loadouts to get rid of their radar.....

Ran through this last night. The scenario ended when I sank an LPD.


spoiler:

Both LPDs were lagging behind the escorts. They were putting along at 14knts, while the main group was pushing forward at 18knts


Also, the scenario ended when I sank one of the two LPDs and had not yet used those F-111 on the base, took me a bit by surprise. You may want to set up a counter side to accumulate points, for instance, add one point for each LPD sank and end the game when it reaches 'exactly 2'. This gives the designer much more control on when the game ends.

I would be careful with the P-3s, that Harpoon loadout in a mid intensity fight like this is an excellent tool, and very powerful (long range, nice radars, a sniper essentially). If you want to force the F-111 attack, you may want to use the counter trick but set the win threshold so you need to sink the LPDs and hit the base.

Bart. Do you have that code? Can you paste it or pm me with it? I'd like to review something that someone has created for that kind of event. Or if your doing it via the regular time triggers?

No special coding, just regular stuff.

-Set up a non-playing side. I usually call mine 'marker', useful for all sorts of stuff like starting a timer, hiding RPs etc. Make it blind to save computing speed.
-Set an action that gives the marker side victory points, it doesn't mater how you do the scoring but the aim is to accumulate the effects of events (i.e. points)
-Set up a trigger based on points

So the player side(s) get their own VPs just like normal, but the VPs that go to the marker side are only for counting. So it allows you to track events without affecting the players victory level.
In this example, say 10 pts for each LPD, 2 for each FF/FFL, 1 for each hanger (or whatever) destroyed. You then base the 'End scenario event at e.g. 30 pts or whatever it takes that the player has likely sank both LPDs, several escorts and several land targets.

Not using this method makes it harder to figure out when to end the scenario as it is usually based on one trigger only and if the player does that first it makes it a short game.

No lua magic involved (otherwise I probably couldn't figure it out

Thanks for the great!!!! idea. That is awesome.

BTW, I didn't want to add the P-3's to the scenario for just that reason.. snipers.. I'm working on refining ruby slipper + working on some of the new command beta stuff, but I'll revamp Merry Christmas soon, I have a ton more code to add and refine with that scenario.
